Saw this too, on my recent ride to Sagittarius. Even a rectangular black region was there. Really strange, I'm curious what's going on here.

I think this is a display error.
Once after I saw this rectangular black region, I opened the galmap and turned the stars around.
And then I saw a complete rectangular sector of stars flicker in the galmap.
AFAIK the "nightsky" in ED is projected from the galmap which could explain these strange rectangular black regions.

The stellar forge did this. The galaxy appears to be built of a series of cubes (about 1,280ly to a side) and each cube has parameters defining stellar density, proportion of different stellar classes etc to reflect where in the galaxy it is.

There seem to be places where the parameters between adjacent cubes - whether for absolute star density or preponderance of the brightest stars - are sufficiently different to make the delineation between the cubes strikingly obvious.
