Elite: Your dream version

Post what features you'd love to see in Elite. It can be anything, even if it's already been planned or rejected. It doesn't have to be realistic, or even possible (although if it is, then bonus points to you). I'll put everything suggested into a list (no matter how crazy), and the features which get mentioned more than once will get voted up. Ideas with the most votes will be at the top, and feel free to list as many as you like. Obviously, there's no point to this (it's really just for fun). :)

Edit: Not in order of importance, simply as they came to my mind.

1. Implement HUD color changing into the options menu. This would make it easier for more PC players to do this (not all PC users know how to tweak the config file), and make the option available to the console players also.
2. A trivial matter, but a tweak is needed to the sound of the engine on the Asp. Why does it sound like a WWII warbird? It doesn't match the theme of the game at all.
3. Flight to atmospheric planet surfaces
4. Flight into gas giant atmospheres :D
5. A FSD which corresponds more closely to the gravitational well of a planet (i.e. why does it slow down so much close to a .2G moon but doesn't slow down nearly as much when I am fuel scooping Betelgeuse?)
6. VELOCITY VECTORS PLEASE!!!!!
7. See number 6. It is that important.
8. Non-instanced deep exploration to enable jumps between systems not otherwise possible by hyper jump alone, i.e. Supercruise for 10ly then enable a 38ly jump to cross a 48ly gap between systems. This would enable more creative exploration especially at the galactic rim.
9. Non-instanced space travel to allow back door travel into permit systems.
10. More creative use of ship slots, for example if a ship has a size 4 slot and I put a size 2 fuel scoop, I should also be able to put a size 2 cargo rack or hull reinforcement. Perhaps limit the modules that can be used in slot space in this manner.

My dream version? In my dream version ED is real. I'm an actual freelance Cmdr with my own space ship. I have a crew of feisty misfits like in Firefly and I travel around the galaxy trying to make a living and pay my crew. I also soil myself every time I see another ship in case they want to kill me, life expectancy ain't great out in the black.

What are velocity vectors?

The lines that race across your HUD in other space sims that illustrate which direction you are facing in space versus which direction you are travelling.
I'll post a screenie or a link once I find one (I'm not on my home computer atm)

VV.jpeg

Edit: This screenshot is from a classic space shooter, Independence War 2. Velocity Vectors are the orange streaking lines that indicate direction and magnitude of travel. They would be especially useful in FAOFF situations when you are facing a completely different direction than what your ship is traveling.

+ 1 for these.....

1: MP3 player in your ship linked to a folder on your PC
1: Fly into or land on planets with atmospheres
1: Fly through gas giant atmospheres
1: Ability to super-cruise all of the way from one system to another without jumping

X3:TC but with ED flight mechanics :p

If i can't fire boarding marines in missiles i'm not satisfied.

This. Only without gates. It would be most epic space sim ever. Also boarding as (optional) FPS game as well.

My dream of ED would be

- an integrated and more visible Storyline that is actually visible ingame with cutscenes and other stuff like live announcements from an emperor beamed into your cockpit etc.
- more PvP driven storyline (CGs are a good start but they are not really linked)
- Atmospheric planets with nice cities and meeting points for CMDRs
- Cool PvP based missions like e.g. give players property like stations and let them interact more
- Power Play - get rid of it or at least, let players also become part of the galaxie's fight for power by establishing real players as Emperors or whatever with their own guild etc.

something like that. Especially IMHO an enhancement of visible story integration and meaningful tasks that change the story visibly and more multiplayer interaction is needed.

I tried to pirate yesterday at a CG spot and I hardly found any player to interact with. Didn't want to shoot down a trader which would have been boring and not nice for the trader.
The community must be streamed along a storyline, CGs are capsuled and have no real effect. It's just done. Then you read in GalNet, it's done. But it really makes no difference.

  1. Separate PvP and PvE modes, which are permanent for the character - no logging out and changing mode.
  2. Two character slots, one can be PvE, one PvP.
  3. Abolish solo mode
  4. Change private groups to be actual in-game groups which carry a name tag, instead of just being instancing mechanisms.
  5. Ownership/construction of small private bases on planets by individual players (not groups - however your friends can build next door to you so you can make larger installations/villages as a group).
  6. Purchase of drones to protect private bases.
  7. Fully customisable HUD including position, text size etc. as well as colour.
  8. A procedurally generated NPC population of several trillion.
  9. A genuine economic simulation based on supply and demand, that affects the production requirements and cost of everything in the game.
  10. A complete range of planetary forms ranging from barren to lush near-Earth complete with diverse flora and fauna
  11. An expansive and comprehensive crafting system, using a huge range of materials collected from planets.
  12. A much more developed salvage system
  13. A travel mode in between supercruise and hyperspace that allows fast jumping across system space, but which has several inherent downsides (huge energy consumption, inaccuracy, long time delay for recharge, etc.)
  14. The ability to see what system I have visited on the galmap as a tabbed option (green = fully surveyed, yellow = partly surveyed)
  15. A complete rewrite of Powerplay to make it a system that is based around the existing minor factions, some of which could develop into large Powers over time. The mechanics to use existing gameplay systems exclusively instead of the current Powerplay mechanics.
  16. CQC Arenas in designated systems as "real-world" combat/racing/competition areas with "real-world" rewards and penalties.
  17. Meaningful wear and tear mechanisms that significantly impact explorers, but have little to no effect on anyone else.
  18. NPC crew and wingmen.
  19. A game system that allows for CGs and major game events to arise from the AI and player activity, instead of being handcrafted by the developers.

That'll do for now :D

Edit - Additional:

20. A transition to client-server game structure rather than peer-peer
21. Expanded text chat to allow global and open group chat channels, faction channels, etc.
22. A more interesting and involved exploration system.

Don't we have that already when using FA-Off? It's pretty vital! (I like to know exactly which side of me is going to slam into a wall in CQC ;))

---

There are so many things, but right now if I had to pick one, I'd like to see an expanded version of Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system, with allies thrown in too.

Have not just mission-givers be aware of our status with them (and remember our past actions etc) but give NPCs the chance to become Tier 2 permanent after a significant encounter. IE if I wipe out a guy's wing, or save a convoy from attack, it'd be badass to encounter them again and have them remember and comment on it, even change their behaviour because of it. Once Legs are in, bumping into them in stations could make for interesting encounters too... (Warning: Shonky fanfic :D)

My dream version?

It'd be an 1:1 full remake of Elite 2: Frontier with ED engine and assets (all planets landable), EVE Online-style character creator and Star Citizen-style walking in spaceships and stations.

Offline, independent universe, with all locations and names as they were in FE2; all gems of player creativity can... go somewhere else.

Edit: Features from the list in OP:

- Fly into or land on planets with atmospheres
- Fly through gas giant atmospheres

I LOVE the sound of the Asp, it's my favourite ship on the sound aspect, so it's a -1 for me on that point.

Every other point in your post, I'm with you.

take APB's characte and car customisation as well as symbol customisation into Elite.

customizeable ships (like visual changes to fins, noses and engines etc.)

take X:Rebirth's economy and "NPC-life" and put it into Elite.

take Evochrons Jump system and put it into Elite to let us finally fly and jump properly free.

Add a proper faction system where people can found, join and be labelled as such (like the NPC's already are)

let players be able to buy/build small hangars at surfacecities, basically some elite housing.

let factions build stations and havign to maintain them- 400 billion star systsms? thats WAY more than mankinds lifetimewill be able to use if frontier sets up a proper maintaining concept.

I LOVE the sound of the Asp, it's my favourite ship on the sound aspect, so it's a -1 for me on that point.

yeah,

so we can add ot the list

customizeable shipsounds.
