I do hope Season 2 helps Piracy - Today's experience just confirms to me it doesn't work very well...

Even if piracy were to be significantly enhanced, Frontier cannot force players to want to play the role of prey for the pirates who preferentially select players as prey (rather than NPCs).

If you think frontier won't "Force people to take the role of prey" then you'll be in for a nasty surprise when NPC pirates are actually a threat

Which they won't as always. Remember the Sub-Reddit that had a list of over 100 combat loggers? All the evidence was provided but nothing would be done, pity it was removed but my point stands I believe FDev should take combat logging a lot more seriously, 15 second timer or not.

Well I disagree regarding the timer thing, but you're right about the rest of it and I agree they should start taking action.

However it's not up to you or I to start crucifying players over their actions in a game. That's the route that leads to the madness and ridiculous hand wringing you see in any code or SDC complaint thread that exists here.

I'm going to repeat "pull the plug" all next week in the hope that someone has an embolism over it right here (or on Reddit). Thish gorn' be sha-weet.

Adding to the options available to the pirate to relieve the target of their cargo would probably enhance the pirate's enjoyment of the experience. I don't really see where the "fun" is for the trader in this scenario though - making the experience less bad (still with the possibility of being destroyed regardless) does not necessarily make it good.
Well the suggestions are a means of the pirate getting their terms over more efficiently... and possibly the victim adhering to them more easily? Seems to make sense to me?

I doubt that Crime and Punishment is a "done deal" - we haven't even had the Beta of 2.1 yet.
Oh.. I thought FD were fairly open about a Crime and Punishment revamp on the way?

Advertising that a player was in the process of using the 15-second-graceful-exit feature might possibly have an effect on pirate behaviour - although I expect that it is not advertised simply because it would be a "shoot-me" flag telling other players in the instance that they had 15 seconds to shoot at the player without any retaliation.
Better not to leave in a combat situation then, unless you really have to? ;)

I'd sit the benefit as out weighing the negatives. ie: A pirate would never need to worry that their victim is just watching 15 seconds counting down.

If there really was the concern about a player's 15 second countdown being broadcast to all CMDRs in the instance, it could even be limited to certain "even types". eg: For starters, you could say it only applies to an interdiction instance for example!?

I wasn't referring to players being prey to NPCs - I though that that was obvious.

Frontier will, of course, balance NPC difficulty in such a way that does not alienate too many players - if the game is no fun to play then people won't.

As one of the above mentioned players, Atrer you are making my day better with each post! Please continue!

So, if what YOU claim is true then we are in a joy feedback loop. I'll keep posting if you will.

Piracy does need a complete revamp. The truly sad part is that FD has been aware of the problem since alpha. And they have done nothing to fix the problem in a manner that would entice players to trade, mine and explore in open.

Here lies the problem.

Every time they make NPC's a challenge, the forum fall out is swift and merciless.

If all players were atleast half confident at PVP, they could raise the difficulty of the NPC's without an issue.

If you need enticing into open, you shouldn't be playing open :p

Sadly still true that they've done nothing about piracy in general, I think the bounty change was actually worse in the long run so lets say they've made it worse since alpha

It would be a bit difficult for Frontier to require players to achieve a particular level of competence in PvP in a game that is sold as a Single Player game (among other things).

Only because they will half-bake it, they just have to have a dynamic difficulty instead of a static one its a standard hidden rating job.

They won't do that though so its going to continue highlighting the difference between players and NPCs :p

Thats the whole point, they shouldn't require competence in PvP as a seperate skill because it should be identical to the skills relevant for fighting NPC pirates, albeit with a skill differential

You know what NPC pirates teach you currently? That hatchbreakers don't work when your shields are up -_-

Tear filled videos? Sure you weren't watching a recording of your last birthday party?

My videos are mostly
Funny as hell. - Salty tears of joy?
Reports to FD of cheaters. - If you are ok with cheating, you sir are a champion of men!
Explanation why we shoot first. - Educational video. If you felt salt or butt hurt, it is at FD's glaring game design issues. Nothing you have managed to do :)

My friend you would see salt in a pepper pot, if it suited your trolling attempts.

Now run along... spitspot

LOL. Ok, convince me that your solution will bring trading and exploration players back into open. How will your solution entice those players to enter open for the first time?

The solution you offer is completely laughable to me. And, I believe, I am much more reasonable than the hard-core PvE players. I actually played open for about two months in a T7. The other commanders that I encountered in open were VERY persuasive in convincing me to join Mobius. With the completely laughable crime and punishment system of FD and the way that system caters to only the Player-Killer crowd. So, convince me that your solution would entice players back into open. Because, as it stands, I am NOT enticed even in the slightest.

I'm scratching my head trying to figure out where the open vs solo discussion came in. Somebody?

Quite - ties in with FDs original idea of "hoisting the flag" (declaration of piracy) & Surrendering.

Couple with this 3 more things:

- Timer (can't wait forever!)
- Logoff message
- Piracy rating (that will encourage piracy and not just random murder*)

Yes, especially piracy rating - the 'Declare Piracy' function could be a good trigger-point of how quickly a pirate ranks up.

After a demand, piracy would be scored positively on any combination of the following:
  • The trader submitted or was disabled
  • A cargo scan was performed
  • Cargo was 'stolen' as opposed to legally abandoned
  • Cargo stolen was of high-value
  • Trader was allowed to live

Negative ratings could be applied to scenarios where:
  • The trader ignores the pirates demand and escapes
  • The pirate killed the trader after the trader submitted
  • The pirate is driven off by reinforments (wing/security etc)
  • The pirate is killed during the robbery

Neutral ratings (no score) would apply if:
  • The pirate takes legal cargo instead of stolen
  • The pirate killed a trader who didn't submit

IMO: I don't care if piracy is a Valid(tm) role. Or if it's Griefing(tm).

It just doesn't make any sense to me to play a game where I play the victim to someone else's criminal. Sure, I could weapon and shield up and fight back, but then I'm playing their way instead of mine. I've played sports game before, and sim-style games, and games too which involved combat. But in all those games we were all playing the same way, not an asymmetric game where traders/miners/explorers get pirated or destroyed and have not much way of fighting back other than abandoning their choice of play-style.

If some traders enjoy the thrill of likely being attacked while busy in some other activity, great. For me it has zero appeal. Zip. Nada. Bupkis.

I've tried to think of ways of reducing the risk for non-PVP players in Open while still allowing illegal gameplay (and I've suggested some). If I can pick my own risk/reward level, great! It'd be a great thrill to run the gauntlet by taking a shortcut through the pirate-infested Badlands and see if I make it to the far side. But if I can be attacked anywhere, anytime, when doing anything.. no thanks.

You sure don't mind it when it's NPCs though?

And abandoning their playstyle choice? Far from it. Apart from the T series every other ship have decent chances of getting away hi-waking when they atleast have a decent setup and play it smart. There are exceptions to this rule when people go all out mad with railguns or what have you.

Seems like I might have gotten myself into a solo vs open discussion.[ugh]

It's been mentioned before but it's maybe worth mentioning again that the results of the cargo scan could be used as both the declaration of piracy and the start of any haggling over cargo to be dropped. The target could accept and initiate the cargo drop or haggle and await a counter offer from the attacker. Any piracy ranking could take into account the pirate's actions after a target complied with the demands and dropped the cargo.
