If that is indeed the case ~5-6 players with full wings and that's the instance full

I'm not sure how much that would matter, instancing would then be the same as multiple player wings.

My motivation for having a NPC wing would be because I don't have a player wing and I want to even up (to a degree) a contest against a player wing. If I could find even 2-3 single players in an instance I wouldn't need a wing anyway because the odds would be balanced.

It's also not just about technical limits of instances, but gameplay itself. You can't just throw more ships in a scenario and tell everyone to deal with it, at a certain point focussed fire from multiple ships becomes so powerful that it obliterates everything. Imagine instead of meeting a wing of 4 players, you encounter 4 players flying together, each with their NPC wing coming along.

I think this is exactly what will happen!

what also will happen is that the players will send their wingmates exclusively onto the other players ignoring any NPC's. while themselves trying to stay away/run away. So it will be 2 commanders sending their creepers onto each other. GG

Foolish me. I did not even think of that. I was approaching this from a soloist perspective, like I played the X-Wings series and others.
You really make me regret there is no off line mode.
I want it more than ever now.

ED's multiplayer/single player shared universe is starting to give me headaches.

You have to realize that a wing of 4 players cannot deploy additional NPC wing members.
If you have your 3 NPCs deployed and you're being invited to a full player wing, your NPCs should despawn.

We are talking about wing members, not NPC pets. A wing is limited to 4 slots.

And what's to stop the PvP crowd taking NPC wings to a fight with them?

Nothing at all, I would hope. However if Wings with players in them stay limited to 4 members then there may be less of an advantage for player Wings - taking into account MoM™'s improvements to NPC-AI that we have seen (and those yet to come)....

Yes but people who play together do not have to form a wing per se.
Or do they?
So they can each have an NPC wing?

Sorry, but I am very noobish concerning the multiplayer part of the game.
I mostly play in Open, but I am a natural born soloist.

I think it would be great to have the option of co-opting a wingman companion for those of us not operating in the busier areas of populated space (especially when you're in a Cobra IV and you're attacked by one of the evil npc FAS's I've met recently!). How that wingman is chosen (ship type) is going to require some thought - perhaps a selection screen with two or three choices? If you fly as a wing with a Human Player any bounties are shared - it has to be the same if you're flying with an NPC wingman to keep it fair. Of course... My female wingman will have to be pretty :p good as a pilot cos I'm mediocre ;)

they can do this.... just like they do it already, albeit with pure players

i believe it is a tactic many of the player groups have used in the past to get far more than 4 together as a giant kill wing....
imo fear of a small percentage of players using npcs to create horrible gank squads should not stop what for many is the most important content which is currently missing from the game..... after all, the ones who really want to do that already do it and right now there is zero chance for the lone wolf when it happens.

1 suggestion...... if i hire 3 npc wingmen to fly with me in a wing, at that point the wing then becomes a "pilots federation" wing, ie they get temporary pilots federation member status whilst flying with me.

this means, they show up as a hollow box with a CMDR next to them..... that way, if a death squad interdict me, the player do not know exactly who is human and who is npc, giving the player precious seconds to run away OR at the very least dilute the laser fire.

I would love this but would also want to take it a step further:

- Purchase their ships and equipment
- Get them to Elite status with me
- Build and maintain friendships with personal side quests once in a while
- Create formations, assign targets, etc
- Be able to hire/fire npc's
- In return, the game would offer big challenges with decent rewards to help build up the team

This type of thing would be really appealing to me...almost like a mini 'Mount and Blade' in space.

Yes, 4 players who would normally wing together could each have a full wing of NPC's each, fielding 16 ships between them.

Wishful thinking!

Yes, I've always liked the idea of not distinguishing between players and NPC's on the radar.

A slight tangent:The argument that "we can't do x because of y" seems to be more and more prevalent on the forums these days. Sometimes it masks an agenda, but in many cases it appears to be the result of a sort of resignation to the idea that some things are broken and will forever remain broken and so must be accepted, along with the loss of any new features that might be affected by them. Which is a bit defeatist. Fix the broken things, then they can't adversely affect the new things.

the 'y' often seems to be a really thin excuse.

We can't have _______ (fill in the blank) in Elite Dangerous! The 1) Lore 2) Instancing 3) Procedural Generation 4) Personal Immersion 5) Other (Choose One) would not allow it.

"But it's standard fare in other (wildly successful) games."

"Yeah, well Elite isn't like other games. If Elite had that feature it would become just like all other games." Because, you know, one feature (optional, even) would ultimately destroy the entire game. :)
