PC / XBox merge

It's time everyone stopped.

Instead of picking trouble over consoles versus PCs we need to all stand together and act as one voice then maybe Microsoft will realise people want certain things to happen and its in their best interest to make it happen same goes for frontier who are doing a marvellous job so far but they need to start getting things together between the consoles and PC.
There are going to always be both console and PCs playing elite so we need to live with that and move on.

I got got the console specifically to play Elite if they had brought it out on the ps4 I would have bought the ps4 that way it's only used for games and not doing other computer work we have laptops in the house for that.

I am finding my xbox1 quite good at Elite so I am happy. I haven't been suffering from any of the problems other have been reporting so far maybe it's because I have Elite loaded on its own drive with no other games.

I would say it's surely possible but as for would they possibly not.

There are loads of reasons it's a good idea we would be able to see who's undermining us etc or who is helping x faction to win. Reasons not to I can't really think of any heck some pc players use 360 pads so why not let xbox players compete. Only reason I just came up with is other console platforms that don't want the merged universe may cause problems for the game to be released on their platform (sony)

As for graphical finesse why would that be a issue surely if we can see it we can shoot it same across all platforms ;)

That would lead to longer update times on PC and I would immagine limit the allready limited graphic and gameplay options to console standards.
I want Xb players to have fun and all ,but I want my PC game to be a PC game before all else... still waiting for the 4K textures and astroid lod fix
Just FYI, Elite can easily generate 4k 8k 16k or...whatever number you want in terms of generation textures, not sure if it will work on planet surfaces but it works for planet generation in general.

this thread has info about it, a bit dated, but in short, in the product folder there's a "GraphicsConfiguration.xml"
You can mess around with to your hearts content :)
Obviously, editing it can cause weirdness, but texture alone editing seems to have no issues.

But yeah Elite is definitely a PC game.

The textures dont have there source version with HD textures. you get what you are given even with editing the XML files.
(for objects like astroids , station texture and ships)

I'm nowhere near tech savvy enough to chime in on the hardware debate, but if it were possible to merge the 2 galaxies, I for one would be for it.

I'm sure we'd all like to see a more populated galaxy!

You should pop in for a cuppa in the XB1 forum guys, we really are a swell bunch... If a little bit bitter :p

Station and ships, very true, fairly sure it affects asteroids though.

FD has spoken on the topic of PC/xbox merge.

Not going to happen.

The reason: would place additional constraints on the PC version, causing it to run slower and also reduce graphics performance for PC users further.

So yea, not going to happen. At least certainly not with this current gen xbox.

Source please, as that makes no sense to me whatsoever.

I can't see why linking two platforms would require a downgrade in one platforms visuals.

The issue is all the non generated textures , but the ones that are ''drawn'' by an artist is limited to what ever FD thinks is standard...
I hope that one day we get a UHD client option so we can have 16K> (if the texture is at that sieze) instead of what looks like 2K.
Of course my PC can not run 16K but it can run 4K... I think that if the source texture is there somewere it should be used as an ption

It doesn't. As you know (hey Whippy! :D) we already inhabit the same galaxy, the same data, the same ships. The only reason PC and Xbox players don't inhabit the same instance is because of the advantage PC players would have with their control setups.
We don't hold the PC version back; in fact, from 1.6 onwards we will have version parity with the PC.

So there.

Well looks like not many people on here have been following the news.

So it is starting to happen with rocket league being the first. How long before it really kicks off.

My own views are mixed. Some games will be good and could open up some great ideas for devs but I don't fancy having to put up with screeching quickscoping console plebs when playing something like battlefield. Driving games could be great and it could open up some good features so PC and console gamers could work together just not the screeching cod horde (you know who I mean)

Yup, but I'm fairly sure the asteroid textures is also generated?

What a load of ball hockey, I can run the game on a aging i3 on low settings and play in the PC Universe so why can't Xbox owners whos hardware predates my aging laptop play in there too?

As for it reducing performance my laptop don't, if someone has a monster PC they can play the game as I can. Same game same BGS it's daft to say it's down to hardware.

There has to be another reason as this one doesn't hold up to scutiny

Actually the merge is going to happen and very soon it's already been proved the xbox1 can handle 60 FPS locked on DX12 with the new Star Wars game but Phil spencer is looking to upgrade the Xbox for VR otherwise they wouldn't have bothered yet I think.

VR is coming like it or not and everyone who's tried it like it.
its the software designers who let the consoles down not the games they decide the frame rates. Since Microsoft opened up core 7 on the Xbox cpu designers have a lot more control on what they can do so open up the 8th core Microsoft and let's see what it can really do.
I don't the Xbox is holding updates back for the PCs though, you have to remember Elite is probably the biggest open world game anyone has ever attempted it's going to take time to fix bugs and do updates
