VR patch incoming today !

Hi Mike

Yes I have excellent judder-free performance everywhere. I tried a few big space stations, ground stations, several planets with multiple type of featues as well as densely populated systems. I have no problem running Ultra + MSAA + SS1.5

As for a CV chat - there's probably nothing you can ask me that hasn't already been answered by the reddit leak guy a few days back :) Even the pixel layout was revealed.

For the FoV - I'll be honest with you, I haven't used a DK2 in many many months now so I can't make exact comparisons, but it seemed very much sameish.
Certainly it's not more of a concern than the DK2, that at least I can assure you.

Sweet that is a serious bump in performance over 0.8 in steam vr and on dk2. I only have a 980 but with some over clocking that bodes well for ultra setting for me tho I will forgo super sampling . roll on my April cv1.

Just trying it now, sat in the Keelback. Wish I switched to 0.8 earlier, just as smooth as 0.5 on my rig, but the IPD is back to normal.

Only issue I'm having is the screen snapping if I lean or move around, FPS is rock solid, just the visuals suddenly move. Is that a known issue with 0.8?

How are you launching ED in steam? All I'm getting is a windowed client with a black screen.

i have a question about my oculus rift?..I bought the O.R about a year an half ago...i used it for a while playing demo's and what not..at the time not many games where ready for it so i put it away...Well I just brought it out today for the first time in months hooked it up to my computer..downloaded the newest drivers from the web site..tested it with the utility software..everything works great in the utility software...So I launch the game... go to options under video and enable the 3d part also i selected to enable the second screen...when i look through my rift all i see are two screens..they are not blended together.. it's like it's not seeing my rift at all but it thinks it a monitor ..what am i doing wrong..can someone help me with this please. I would love to play this in VR.

Thanks

Dexatron

Yes I was very pleasantly surprised by the performance. I'm now seriously thinking of skipping pascal & polaris GPUs ... they just don't seem to be necessary.

Though .. be aware that all of this I'm running on a 5820k @ 4.4Ghz .. which is a pretty badass CPU with 6 cores, which ED really likes to put load on.

Well I can confirm that the DK2 works with the latest update (non SteamVR mode) and a newer Oculus runtime.

My thoughts:
- Sli doesn't seem to play nice, it causes jumps and judder when moving your head.
- The desktop mirror window keeps returning to 720p after exiting the game.
- Super sampling does not seem to effect the image on the rift, but does effect performance when set above x1.5.
- I get micro judder when looking at the pilots body and turning my head.
- Unable to confirm that Async Timewarp is enabled or working.
- I can't find anything in game or otherwise to show what my IPD is set at.

Thats based on a quick 30 min session. All settings on high running on a DK2, 5820k @ 4Ghz & GTX980. I'll have another mess later but so far I have to say that I found the games performance sub par compared to when run on runtime 0.5. The seeming loss of SLI support is also a bit of a let down but I hope the higher res of the CV1 will mitigate the need to super sample and thus eliminate the need for SLI.

Is there no way to disable the SteamVR desktop mirror? The judder on planets is exactly the same as when I enable the app config secondary window.

I can somewhat confirm this. SS x1.5 barely (if at all) increased image quality and didn't seem to hit performance. SS x2 is more noticable visual-wise but completely destroys my performance.

- I get micro judder when looking at the pilots body and turning my head.
Same here, though it's happening very very rarely and is a complete non-issue f

Yep, I couldn't tell if it works either. When I get un-dizzy from the SRV session I had, I'll run again and try to verify it works or it doesnt work.

It's no ingame, but rather in the Oculus Home and more particularly, in the HMD setup stage.

It's certainly better I assure you, though objects in the distance are still several pixels big, and no amount of SS fixes that.

On the great, great side - SDE is just non-existant now. I mean you really need to look for it.

Overal I'm so happy with CV1 that I'd like to have a CV2 now :p

Well reading ghcannon's comments on how well the CV1 & ED are playing so nicely together, I'm even more looking forward to receiving my CV1 in May
It will be interesting to see if the DK2 has a performance increase when the new runtime lands

Also getting judder

Shame because it feel smother otherwise! I notice the hz is set to 80. I will try setting it to 75

Yeah, it does feel better, it's just the steam VR part screwing things up. I am literally using brute force to keep things playable on planets.

Check out my comments on the previous page. My overall impression is that the DK2 does not work as well as it did with runtime 5.0 but does run better than when used with SteamVR. The seeming lack of SS really makes the DK2 image ugly and full of jaggy lines again :(

Well I wouldn't say that, this morning I could look at my in game body and pan left and right without an issue, now doing the same causes a very fine judder effect as I pan on my DK2, which is not pleasant at all. Hopefully it's just DK2 related...

Until the 1.3 runtime is released on Monday, I would expect this version to perform in a practically identical fashion to 2.0.06. It is still using the 0.8 runtime and SteamVR/OpenVR.

@ghcannon - It would be, you know, a real shame if the 1.3 run time leaked.... ;)

I am using a runtime higher than 0.8 with my DK2, and basing my comments on the performance observed while testing the latest Elite update with it. I am not using SteamVR.

So you are using 1.3 and it performs worse than 0.5? :/

My overall impression is that with a DK2, elite and 1.3 perform worse than 0.5. The lack of working SLI doesn't help and the seeming lack of SS makes the DK2 over all image worse than 0.5 where SS could be set at x1.5.

I assume I have 1.3 installed but I got the installer a month ago being part of a closed alpha for another title. It could be 1.0 for all I know....Can't say a lot about the runtime as I'm under NDA, I didn't bother installing it until today as it broke too much stuff I played including Elite.. Until today that is.

Ok I see you are only running a 980, plus you still have a mirrored view? I'm a little confused, I though the mirrored view is caused by steam VR? Am hoping to get rid of any mirrored view once 1.3 hits.

Snap ;)
Currently only at 4.25ghz but it's at stock volts and ninja cooling. It's a monster CPU I got in a black Friday bundle and I reckon if I really wanted to I may have a shot at close to 5 ghz

Sorry about the duplication here but I am getting serious FPS loss and I think it is related to the second window.

Compare the FRAPs screenies.

Prior to 2.0.07 and using 0.6, I was getting ~75 on rocky worlds pretty much constantly and the screenies took both channels.
2.0.6 and 0.6.jpg

Today, with 2.0.07 and 0.8, FRAPs only takes the one channel and I get serious FPS loss especially if I look around. Behold!
2.0.7 and 0.8.jpg

What are other people finding?

Thanks!

I have turned off Steam. (No steam in my tray etc.)

I still have the mirrored view

#EDIT!

I have just had a thought! The game is rendering 3 views! Left/Right for VR and a third for the monitor! That is why I am getting the FPS loss!
