There is a constant stream of threads raging about the modes, I'm pretty sure there is a great big thread somewhere but fortunately haven't seen it in a while.
I play group and solo mostly and sometimes, very occasionally open. The thing that irks me the most is the reasons why players seem to think a player like myself, doesn't want to play in open and for some reason they see me not playing with them as a problem that needs to be "fixed". Lets first make a list of reasons that have nothing to do with it shall we?
I'm sure I could come up with more, but we'll leave it there.
Why don't I want to play open? I just don't want to deal with you. I don't care if you want to say hi, wing up, shoot me, scold me, annoy me, congratulate me, whatever. I just don't want to deal with it at all. I come home from work, I take care of the kids, I spend time with my wife, after all of that it's late and I want to relax and enjoy a game and that game often happens to be Elite. What I don't want to do is deal with more people. I'm an introvert (look it up, there are quite a few misconceptions, I'm an excellent public speaker, compete athletically in front of lots of people and often a competent leader, that has nothing to do with introversion/extroversion), I did that people thing all day at work and home and church and shopping, etc. I don't need to do it in my quiet, personal corner of the house where I spend my recreation time as well.
Sometimes I don't want it at all, so I play solo. I don't want to see a single hollow box and wonder what another person wants, or if they want anything at all. Other times I just don't want to deal with the possibility/stress of conflict (usually did that all day) so I'll play Mobius and that almost completely takes direct PvP off the table, which can be nice. I can say hi, hang out, wing up, be a little social without having to deal with someone wanting to pressure me into doing something I don't want to do (piracy, pvp, whatever). Sometimes I feel actually quite social or just want some spontaneous interaction (this is extremely rare) and I'll be one of the most active local chat participants at a CG or in a RES or CZ or whatever, so I'll play open and interact.
You see, it has almost nothing to do with a concrete reason because it's almost entirely emotional, it's just my mood, it's just what sounds the most appealing at the time. And it doesn't matter what bonus or penalty or whatever you change or make enticing or penalizing or whatever, I am just not digging it because that's just who I am. I don't want to play a game that makes me feel drained when I already feel drained to start with; so I choose a mode that allows me to avoid that.
Sometimes it's just not the flavor I'm after and I have a feeling I'm not the only person with this kind of sentiment. Open is not the one true ED, it's a way to play and if you enjoy it, GREAT! ENJOY IT! But understand that like with ice cream, some people like and dislike flavors different than you and open is just one flavor of ice cream, while group and solo are other, equally delicious flavors. Can't we all just enjoy our ice cream without conniving some way to compel players to eat the same flavor as us?
I love ED so much because I can choose, I can enjoy the game how I want, when I want and I think that is awesome and I don't think anyone should be pressured or cajoled or prodded into playing it in a way that they don't like. Isn't it wonderful that so many of us can play the same game when we otherwise wouldn't because we'd either be forced to do it as a single player or a multiplayer experience which would ruin it for one or the other of us. Thank you FD for your elegant solution to that problem.
TLDR: The tldr is a resounding base note in the funeral dirge of the collective intellect of our societies.

- It isn't fear of losing credits/property. (insurance is 5%...I mean....it's not hard to maintain that, its 5 out of every 100 credits. I lost 10 million to a spawn bug on a planet, oh well, that's what insurance is for, right?)
- It isn't fear. (of what? you? little ole you in your fancy digital space ship?)
- It isn't incompetence. (I'm not worried about getting blown up because I can't fly well, or bonking the dock and being embarrased or doing something that will reveal some facet of my ignorance)
- It isn't connection issues. (Every now and again when in a multiplayer mode the P2P disintegrates and ships rubberband/stutter/jump but that doesn't happen often enough to be a real issue)
- It isn't instancing. (It can be annoying, but not to the point that it makes me want to give up on getting into the one I want.)
- It isn't immersion breaking ('hey noobz, wuts up", while annoying, isn't a deal breaker)
- It isn't seeking an unfair advantage (I'm not doing it so you can't oppose me in the CG or whatever.)
