Just tried my first planetary landing. Huh.

Experiance and knowledge and know-how trump a diploma every single time.
They can also be earned and sharpened while gaining said diploma :)

I think the game fails because it is too opaque, and that the developers don't know how to create and communicate. That is my thesis, and the numerous complaints support it.
In my opinion, the devs have no problem with creating. It's the communication to the player part that is lacking. The game does rely quite a bit on previous gaming experience and nous rather than having purpose made in-game tutorials and explanations. That tends to cause unnecesary levels of frustration at times, as you are clearly aware of.

Thankfully the ED community are a great bunch of dedicated people who like to help each other by making external tools, tutorials, explanations and etc. Of course that shouldn't serve as an excuse for FD to not improve communication and explanations (something they have already promised to improve). It ultimately comes down to if you're a glass half full or glass half empty type of person. For example, lots of people who posted here gave you a lot of accurate information as to how to dock the SRV and how to solve some problems like when the ship lands in awkward terrain so hopefully that has helped you.

So besides the tens of minutes of video tutorials offering step by step instructions and the manual, what else would you suggest to be less opaque.

There is only so much Devs can do to provide information, if people aren't willing to use it and still complain things are too opaque

Your "thesis" if you want to use that word is
If you don't read the manual, if you don't do the tutorials, if you don't watch the training videos, this game doesn't tell you how to do things
Which is pretty intellectually disingenuous, especially when paired with your attacks that the devs are deliberately trying to make it hard/opaque to feel smart, which is more a projection from you I feel.

Thats fine , but I feel the game is better due to it being opaque. games should never hold your hand IMHO.
And there are video tutorials and a massive manual (like in the good old days)

True , and I hope that most get the chance to have a diploma because it does add on a lot to your life.

I can see both sides here, yes the OP had legitimate issues (I had similar when unable to board in my Asp, as others have mentioned it, the Asp must have low slung landing gear). Yes the instructions are there, but nothing "in game" (why are there no buggy tutorial missions? and if there are why have I missed them? lol).

But I don't understand and never will the desire to call proper instruction "hand holding" and other demeaning descriptions, are driving lessons "hand holding"? how about learning to fly? If you're intelligent why can't people work these things out for themselves or via a "learn to drive/fly" website?

Back in the old days of gaming I LOVED the humongous manuals you'd get for a game, I'd spend a while reading it then I'd read more while the game took an age to install/load. I miss the "old" manuals. :(

Printers are quite cheap these days. [haha]

yeah I picked up a nice colour laser printer for £50 last year, toner on the other hand is expensive as hell and I do not want to print off a 300 page manual (which no-one does anymore hence my lament) at cost to MYSELF!
