Does this build look like a good deal to you?

Hi guys,
I'm thinking of splashing out for a new VR rig in a couple of months. I might even wait to see what happens with the 10xx cards, the first of which may be out this summer. I have been looking at this build from Scan.co.uk for a while and was wondering if it seemed like a reasonable bundle.

I have absolutely zero interest in building my own PC, and won't be swayed, so please don't suggest that :).

Thanks to Zenith for suggesting a Z170 + i7-6770K instead of X99 + i7-5280K, I don't think I'll need the extra cores, and the new setup gives more speed in single threads by the looks of things. I also have put in a modular 750W power supply thanks to Deimos and others. You can ignore the blurb, since I have upgraded several components.

Holy cow, how much :O

It's a decent rig but wow, I know you don't want to build your own but to put in perspective how much of a markup that is for prebuilt. They're effectively charging you the cost of another 980ti on top of the component prices.

VR is still a bit of an unknown. But those specs should be okay for vr for a couple of years, although probably not at max settings with ED:H on a single 980ti.

Agree with above poster. Looking through that build you have high-end components but looks like you have scrimped on the PSU, which is never a good idea, and doesn't allow much room for expansion. And why not go fully-modular instead of semi-modular?

Thanks for the response so far. I can change power supplies no problem :). Also a 980TI worth of mark-up is a lot... I'll investigate further. I'm happy to pay something of a premium to get a professional build and good warranty, but maybe not that much (maybe?).

Does the fact that I don't understand your question answer it :p? I have a few months to do research!

Also, is there any disadvantage to going for one of the "silent" cases instead of the white default?

I don't know... I've got a quite similar system for about £1590.- . The large internet shops tend to be more expensive, I guess.

My system would have cost me about the same amount as your compilation. However, a local store was able to underprice it by 15-20% and allowed to chose exactly the components I wanted (the big stores oftentimes are limited in the combination possibilities).
Furthermore, they fulfilled my request and added an additional USB 3.0 output card, as the Rift would have used up all ports. This option wasn't even available at the online-store!

So, if you have the possibility, you may want to find a similar local store in Cambridge?
They will be able to help you with problems and an eventual warranty claim would be easier, too.

Change the graphic card for 980Ti and a 750W modular PSU and it comes in at £1551 which is £267 cheaper yet still with a fantastic amount of oomph.

Thanks for the advice regarding board and CPU! Are you including VAT with your price, cos when I try it I get about £1700 after changing to 980Ti and 750 W PSU; the difference is made up in SSD pretty much.

By the way, looking at pcpartpickers was just depressing because I could get the components for the same price in dollars in the US as the sterling price back here in the UK (I moved back)!

You're right, I think I was looking at the ex.VAT price.
I just re-ran it on my desktop (rather than my tablet), and it came in at a few pence short of £1700.

The reason I know that Z170 + Skylake CPU works well is because I got an i5-6600 with Z170 motherboard and 8GB RAM for Christmas. I can upgrade to i7, boost up the RAM and upgrade my graphic card in the future while still having a perfectly capable gaming PC right now.

were you comparing the price with US prices? I've found about a 980Ti's worth of difference there, but when I look at prices in UK stores, there's not a huge amount in it. The build (or something like it) is about 130 GBP more expensive than getting the individual parts at Amazon.co.uk; I can live with that for labour and warranty :). The cost of the components was about 30 GBP cheaper than Amazon over all, with an extra 160 GBP for labour and 3 year warranty (1 year on site, 2 year return to base)

By the way, it looks like a 6700K and Z170 is better for me because I intend to use it for gaming mostly rather than video editing etc, so don't need the extra cores :).

Also, I did say I might wait for something like the nvidia X80 / 1080:)

X79 has already been surpassed by X99, there will never be an X80 chipset.

I generally agree with the sentiment here to go for Z170 instead of X99, you are not building a workstation. Unless you are loaded and don't care about money, in which case, why stop at a single 980Ti and Air cooling?

If you are worried about money, get Z170, you'll get much more bang for buck.
