Elite / Frontier **FAIL** at emulating original Elite - help needed!

Hi

The title sums it up. I've been on the Bell website and tried to get the original version of Elite to work. I have tried all the versions listed - I cannot get any to work. The closest I have got is with the Archimedies version; I've unzipped and attempted to run the application, only to get the error message that the application is not compatible with my version of windows. (It mentions 32 or 64 bit :S)

I will fess up at this point to knowing nothing about computers at all:eek:, which may be the problem...

I'm trying to set the game up on a windows 7 laptop. Could someone point me toward an "idiot proof" download, Im not too bothered what version of the game it is, rather, how easy it is to get installed ;)

Many thanks for the time.

Al

Just a quick reply: Try WinUAE and use the Elite.adf file (here: http://www.thegamearchives.com/?val=0_2_1_0_0_9_47604_0_0_0_0). WinUAE can be downloaded from www.winuae.com -- this is _rather_ easy, but you still need to find a kickstart rom.
In short: If I find some time tonight (probable!), I can provide a one-in-all.exe file for you that'll just install the Amiga version on your computer. Would that help?
(If you don't want the Amiga version, I can't help though :)).

Unfortunately, there is no simple way to make an old programs run on Windows without getting your hands a little dirty. Running any old software will require a second program to run it from - namely an emulator. Windows has no dos emulator built in, so you will need to obtain another program to do this. Luckily these programs are free.

I use this:

Download the program and unzip. The program runs directly from the "launch.exe" file.

When you run the "dbgl" program use the Add Game Wizard to add your game to the program list.

You may need to do this fiddling to get the game to work properly, but quite often I find the default settings OK.

Let me know if you need any extra help.

P.S. So far I've got Elite 2 to run on PC and a PSP. I play around with emulators quite a bit, I can get SNES, Gameboy, Gamecube, PSOne, PS2, Amiga and Dos games to run on PC. I think the Amiga option is probably the most difficult to do!

Ok, I lied: I couldn't put everything into a single exe. Instead, I have provided a zip archive; I hope, that's ok, too!

First, download the zip file from http://www.phbouillon.de/Elite_WinUAE2410.zip

And extract it to a folder of your choice (the subfolder WinUAE2410 will be created).

In the extracted folder, you will find the file "WinUAE.exe", which you can start by double-clicking.

WinUAE will display a warning message, that at least a rom configuration file is needed. This message can be ignored (click ok).

Then, choose "Configurations" from the tree on the left hand side (under Settings). On the right hand side double click on either "Elite" or "Elite 2.0", depending on the version of Elite, you'd like to play.

That should be it. Elite should start...
Happy hunting, Commander!

Try syncromeshes site it's got all the goodies you'd ever want. It's links in his signature.

Some more details to my download (should anyone else be interested):

Should a previous version of WinUAE be installed, the configurations in my download won't be found unless the directory Users/Public/Amiga files will be renamed to something else ("Original Amiga Files" for example).

When Elite is started, you can use F12 to go back to the command console of WinUAE.

If you want to change disks (after Elite is loaded, you can insert a save disk), go to "disk swapper" and click on the appropriate save disk in the "df0" column (which instructs the Amiga to put the disk into its internal drive).

Hth!
