Google definition of Piracy. Do we need a new role?

If the implementation of the so called Pirate 'career' in ED is anything to go by FD clearly don't know what piracy is; the NPC's don't do it, and nearly none of the players do it either.

Read the DDF archives for an insight into what FD thought (at the time) what a pirate was.

Sadly most of those ideas never made it in time for release and since other things have taken priority.

Quite sad really as piracy had a rating as well (boosted by selling stolen goods // dropped by destorying ships) and could very well have helped deter people from just flat out murder.

Even though you are now independently wealthy, what can you do that doesn't actually involve getting paid in this game?

how about ...

exploring?
and

buckyball races
and

dark arts bgs: destroying system security ships
or

learning to fly FAOFF
:D

... but yes, you are right. those people really want to pay me. does this make me employed?

___

i don't think, it is really a role - aspects of that kind of gameplay can befound in many playstyles. but somehow the word "Hunter" in the meaning of stephen kings "Running Man" sticks in my head... a "Man Hunter". combine it with "thrill crime" mentioned above, it might be something like "Thrill Hunter".

Not quite... a kind of boosted adrenal thing, drug induced... the movie Serenity explains it quite well.

uhm, not firm with the movie, but wasn't getting a reaper an effect of some experiments on the planet miranda? a kind of counter-reaction to a drug which was meant to calm down everybody?

Yes! of which we have every right to be despite other people saying we do not!

Well, the intent of the thread wasn't whether or not it should be allowed, but rather that the term "Pirate" does not apply as was envisioned by FD (I am making some assumptions on their part here, full disclaimer...). As mentioned, the trade of "Murderer" probably won't make it into the game description hehe ;). But lets face it, murderer or Pk'er/griefer/ganker/whatever has been around in every multiplayer game ever built that allows PvP interaction. Might as well make it official, the trade of "Reaver" seems to have come closest so far in describing the role! :|

Just based on the bulletin board

Mercenary - Conflict Zone kill Missions
Bounty Hunter - Pirate kill missions
Assassin - Kill mission of named targets, be they defectors, escaped prisoners, Celebrities, Pirate lords, Disloyal military commanders or Key figures on another faction
Pirate - Obtain stolen goods from target ship
Salvager - Collect legal goods from deep space
Thief - collect illegal salvage from deep space - stolen goods wanted (need not be pirated can be found in WSSes)
Search and rescuer - Missions to rescue Life pods
[not sure what this could be called] - Hostage Rescue missions
Privateer - Kill Trader missions a form of economic warfare
Terrorist - Kill Civilian or authority ships missions (violence to promote political or economic change)
Miner - Osmium, Palladium (or it is platinum) and Painite missions
Courier- Courier missions
Contact Freight Hauler - Legal Cargo delivery missions
Smuggler - Illegal Cargo Delivery missions
Tramp trader - Goods Wanted Missions

Power Play
Gun hand - Various conflict zones that offer rewards as a legal Auxiliary on a long term arrangement
Privateer - Undermining the Economic and Political actives under warrant
Cargo Hauler - delivery of Power play tokens

Only explorers lack missions - Explorer rank locked Courier missions aside, which is more courier than explorer
And there is nothing stopping you killing NPCs for kicks.

All this can occur in solo, so Player to NPC
NPCs can try to kill you for seemingly no reason, you have no cargo but and they don't scan just declare they will boil you up.

So to the OP's original question

But what seems to be happening in Open play (NPC's don't do this...), is players interdicting and/or simply
blowing up other players without any motive for robbery. I didn't see a "role" or "career" listed on the FD
site for this type of play (Eg: trader, pirate, smuggler etc).

Do we need a new role and description to cover this mode of play? I keep seeing posts about Pirates but I
would suggest that is the wrong role title. [blah]

Nope; NPCs do kill you for no reason and no the role is already in there, Piracy, Privateering, and terrorism

Or we could assume the english or what ever language is used in the elite universe is even more degraded than it is today so the diffinition can pass

What about "terror tourist"?
A person who solely journeys from system to system to bring forth
terror, murder and death.
(From the Game "Aquanox 2")

There already is a definition its psychos, FD made it for NPCs - the type that interdict you then go

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Usually in a sidewinder

Its pretty much identical to people blowing you up for fun so its always been the description I use.

Pirate perfectly describes the people that do actually engage in piracy, 99% of the problem is that people bust on the forums and use the first word that comes to their head to describe a psycho moron and sometimes its pirate, which has just rolled the whole thing into one.

When you google piracy you get the following description:

the practice of attacking and robbing ships at sea.

synonyms:freebooting, robbery at sea; archaicbuccaneering
"piracy on the high seas"

Looking forward to some tongue in cheek responses (and don't forget forum rules....) [yesnod]

Its because FD made it impossible for players to pirate other players through certain mechanics, basicly piracy isn't profitable, why do you think so many pirates went psycho.

Yes, it appeared in one of the patch notes as an NPC Archetype but I cannot remember exactly what it was called to search for the entry
