Mining Meta-alloys in open

Let's be honest, we are breaking them with no analysis of what impact that has on their ecology.

The only thing we do know is they have fireflies like the UA do and they have a connection with the UA. It's fair to say the UA act like they are sentient, they scan our ships and otientate thrmselves in space. They also react when you scoop them. They try to escape by attavking your cargo hold doors. Then they attack your life support system. Putting pressure on you to release them.

Sounds like the UA act like a sentient being. I propose on this basis the Barnacles should be left alone.

Admittedly it's a bit late for that.

Umm.....I'm not convinced they are sentient. One of my predecessors planted an acorn next to my house. It grew upright - orientating itself to grow vertically. As it grew it started to block the light from my windows - a clear attempt to kill me (it must have thought that like it I depend on light to survive). When that didn't work it tried to undermine my house causing severe structural damage. Then I killed it. Was that tree sentient ? Your definition of sentient seems to say yes. I disagree.

A sentient being that can't defend itself ? I don't buy that. At best its a very low form of sentient.

Come on - be my friend - or I'll punch you.... LOL

They are not sentient! I never said that. And David Braben more or less confirmed that they aren't. They are organic constructs. But they are still alive and not yours to do as you please with them. :D

Tell me - what do you eat ? I bet you murder organic constructs every day. Still as judge and jury I doubt you threaten yourself - you reserve that for others. Well done.

And that's exactly my point! We will all burn and suffer because of this! :D

i won't. i will write "I DID NOT TAKE PART IN MA-FARMING" on my explonda, when they come - you don't have to tell them it was for mode-switching, i did it for moral reasons!

i think that kind of organic/unorganic/sentient categorization is a very anthropocentric or at least sol-centric way of thinking... I'm not sure whether they will like that kind of discussion. I will try to explain it to them, though.

It the tomato was planted by aliens that would threaten to destroy the Earth if someone eats it I WOULD NOT EAT IT. ;)

I, too, hope I will get out of this with a warning. [where is it]

I hope I can prove it. If they have good enough detection thingy, I can prove that no M-A nor UA ever touched any of my ships!

If they made the barnacles, they probably keep track of who's using them and for what purpose.
We should be off the hook... hopefully... maybe... perhaps they will kill us last... uhm.

Well done. Well no threats have been issued by the tomato planters OR the barnacle planters - but apparently its then OK for you to murder tomatoes but I can't prune barnacles. Good job you are judge and jury - your arguments would not convince an open-minded jury....

NO - If they have a good enough detection "thingy" THEY could make the proof... Logical thinking isn't your strong point is it ?

1, Log into Solo
2, Mine meta alloys
3, Relog
4, Go back to step 1

This is the only decent way to farm them as they respawn on login.

From what I can tell, the barnacles are not much different than other plant life like trees. They just adapted to the vacuum of space and airless planets. And unlike trees they have the ability to spread through space, not just a single planet. The trouble is, asking if they are intelligent/sentient before we "kill" them, seems irrelevant in the context of human beings. Its what we do. We shamelessly exploit plant life and intelligent life for our own benefit. In fact you could argue thats what most lifeforms do to survive, they consume another lifeform and turn it into itself.

I feel the compassion from some cmdrs for other intelligent lifeforms which I can appreciate and feel the same, but I really hope you are all Vegans (and no Vegetarian does not count). If you have ever consumed animal flesh or have eaten eggs/cheese/milk, if you have a leather couch, or leather seats in your car, or even a leather belt or anything made from animals, you are indirectly responsible for the deaths of many animals (you just had someone else do the dirty work). Animals share many of the same traits as human beings, such as the ability for affection, happiness, pain, fear and a drive to survive. So for those who arent Vegans (which is probably most), why are you so concerned about a plant showing no intelligence on some alien world. And even if it did show intelligence, being human, would we not "do as we please" and exploit it for our own benefits anyway? Intelligent life isnt safe around humans, unless they can fight back or are cute, or taste bad and have nothing that can be harvested from them.

Hopefully we will have evolved past our selfish barbaric state in a few hundred years from now. Humans are certainly already capable of surviving quite comfortably without praying on/farming/enslaving other intelligent life.

It seems others disagree but I am beginning to think these Barnacles and UA need protecting from our current attitudes.

If we confine a definition of Sentience to mean our human experience then how are we going to fully understand an alien race when we finally meet them.?

Frontier have put a huge effort into the clues behind the mysteries, in order to crack them people have had to apply a lot of brains and effort to the task. Are we not then cheapening that effort by simply blowing them away? Should we not raise our moral outlook to the levels of the effort required to find them?

It took a long time to find them. Maybe we should spend some time trying to figure out if Frontier want us to understand them. Everything about this game suggests there is usually more to something than meets the eye.

Just my opinion.
