Customizable touch panel controller for iPad/Android

Hey all,

Thought I'd share the Elite: Dangerous layout I made for the Air Keyboard app for iPad. (It's a keyboard app that works over wifi. Totally worth the $3 and supports iPhone/Android as well.) It's served me pretty well so far. Here's a screenshot of the layout:

And an action shot:

Here's a Dropbox link for the layout. You can sync the layout onto your device via iTunes or just copy the files onto an Android device.

Enjoy!

Very creative, but without the tactile feel of buttons (hotas or m&kb) I fear you have to look away from the screen a lot.

Hi

Will give this a go over the weekend and I have my pad just below my screens so just a case of looking down but with main screens in view.

Uh, yeah. Don't use it if you can't handle glancing away from the screen for a fraction of a second. Thanks for the helpful comment.

Have you ever tried to keep your reticule on a moving object to maintain target lock while not looking at it? How about ensuring you add the pips to the sheilds and not the guns, while keeping an eye on your attacker and moving both the joystick AND the throttle.

Also have you ever heard of the oculus rift? Those who have or will buy a VR set will have major problems with this, because you are essentially blind to all else and there is no tactile feedback on a pad and THESE are the reasons Ozram said what he said, maybe you should have a little more thinking time before posting such a flippant and hostile reply.

The initial idea is sound for those who might use this, but the layout is all wrong. You need to completely remove all combat based instructions and have a layout that will have commands that are non survival critical.

*frantic dogfight* annnnd.... "damn I just jettisoned my rares instead of a heatsink"

Or you could use voiceattack and be rid of the fumbling.

Listen, buddy, I'm just sharing this thing I've put a bunch of effort into in the hopes that someone else will find it as fun and useful, too. The thread title says "touch panel," so obviously there's no tactile feedback. Ozram did not provide an explanation and dismissed the idea in a patronizing manner.

add the pips

I bind pips to the POV hat. This layout includes some macro buttons (the ones that look like lightning bolts) to distribute full power to a system with a single press. They're pretty satisfying to use.

Cool, people can make their own layout using the template I've provided.

I get what you're saying, but there's more to this game than combat.

Those who have or will buy a VR set will have major problems with this

You're telling me a very small fraction of players will have problems with it? k, thanks.

Or you could use voiceattack and be rid of the fumbling.

Or I could just use whatever I want. Your reply feels awfully hostile.

I've been using a touch panel for ED (using a different system though) for over a year and I can tell you that if you have at least the IQ of a sponge you'll be able to handle glancing away momentarily. Car drivers do it all the time.

No, of course a rift user wouldn't use it, who suggested they would? This isn't done for rift, the OP has very generously shared his work for people who want a touch screen. Then again how many rift users ARE there? 5% of players? Oh and have you ever tried chatting by text while using a rift, equally difficult but i don't see you bagging keyboards. And perhaps you like talking to your computer, but I (like many others) play at night and have to be considerate of other members of the.household who may be sleeping, or simply don't want to hear me yelling at the computer. Some of us simply don't like voice control.

Seriously, get over it. If you don't want to use it that's fine, no-one said you have to but lay off the OP. He's put a bunch of effort into something he obviously enjoys using, and has kindly shared it with us for those who might also use it. He at no time suggested that you must replace voice recognition or rift with it, or that FDev remove support for all other controller in favour of his. The fact that his choice of HOTAS isn't one the most ridiculously expensive ones demonstrates that this is an option that might interest those who are unable or unwilling to invest large sums of cash into game gear, but have a tablet and would like something more customisable than a standard keyboard. In fact because it's just emulating keyboard commands there's no reason you can use this WITH a keyboard AND whatever other controller you want. You could even use it to set up text chat macros so you could send messages like "stand and deliver" with just the press of a button.

+1 for the OP. Nice effort.

Here's a shot of the system I use. Rather than a tablet I've got a cheap USB touch panel I bought used off ebay on my computer and software called "TouchBuddy" running the panel. It's no longer supported but I've got a copy of the most recent distribution that I'm happy to send to anyone interested (it's freeware, no theft involved). Bit fiddly to set up but zero lag coz it runs on the host machine. (It apparently can also run on a networked windows machine like a laptop or tablet with a touchscreen, never tried that myself). Great for those who prefer a single machine or windows set up for whatever reason. Another advantage is that when I'm not playing I use it to run the windows calendar app which syncs with my android calendar.

I did one using gPad pro (android, WARNING, CHECK BEFORE BUY!! THAT SOFTWARE SEEMS TO BE ABANDONED BY ITS DEV)

I have like 8 big buttons on the screen.. And they are stuff I rarely used and not in voice attack (that I often forgot which key) like select highest threat..

I did like 20 smaller buttons before, but it was very counter intuitive (hard to use) so I changed it..

Now I think I'm going to try use tablet for swipe mechanic rather than touch button.. maybe for SRV turret, so I can drive while other can use the tablet to shoot stuff (still have no idea how to drive like that)

or I maybe a key bind for some macro sequence like docking permission etc..

Looks great, though personally I am working with LEA as another person linked in a thread a bit back here, seems to have a lot better tools and communicates with vjoy so you can emulate joysticks axis inputs as well as buttons and switches.

https://www.leaextendedinput.com/

Currently looking for a cheap tablet or such for input, combined with voiceattack and maybe even voyattacks plugin to emulate/control the vjoy as well, seems like a great setup.

This is awesome for those who want to make home cockpits,I have been looking for exactly something like this...might bug ya in a day or two for help syncing your files if I cannot get it to work on my pad

Umm, bit of a headscratcher here. The OP put effort out of his own time to create something that's useful to him, and he decided to share it with the community in case someone also finds it useful. If you PERSONALLY don't find it useful, then don't use it - nobody's putting a gun to your head, and there's no need to crap on his work in the process.

Reppy goodness to shipdestroyr for doing more for the community that some of the other moaners in here.

you do realise probablly 95% of the players do not use occuls or ever will.
Most just play with the gear they got...most are not going to drop an extra $500 to play a game

Anyone bashing this guys work go get F#%ed
I swear you guys would sneer at a dirty hundred dollar bill because it had a stain on it

It'd be even better if FDev would finally do the API they talked about over a year ago. Right now there's no way to interrogate the game to see if landing gear's up or down, lights are on or off, etc. If you could you would be able to include indicator lights or similar that actually reflect the game's state, rather than reflecting the number of times you've pressed a virtual button and assuming (hoping) the game is in the same state.

Thanks for sharing his. Have rep and take no notice of churls. This is just the sort of community things we should support, not carp at. Thanks again.

Rep added. I'm not going to use this, but it looks good and a lot of us appreciate effort like this. Ignore the people who just want to complain about everything they set eyes on as if everything should be designed around their needs and wants
