Why no love for the orca?

I have one. It's a fun ship, and if she had a bit better jump range, I would maybe preferred her over the Clipper.

Her time will come with water on planets, and before that, passengers. The reason nobody like to use her a lot is because she has crappy shields as you can't fit the class 6. The C6 slot and one of the C5s can be only used for cargo and HRPs, because it's meant for passenger cabins, when they come. That really hinders the ship's usefulness for anything else but hauling cargo. And both T7 and Clipper are much better even in that and for half the price.

Shame really. And that jump range... *shighs*
Still luv her, though. :)
Who needs shields when you can have this much armor?

The reason for the Orca's existence? Forum readers should Google "Sugar Bus of Shapsugabus vs. CODE".

'Nuff said. ;)

I wouldnt mind seeing the orca get a better jump range when stripped down, bigger fuel tank too.

It'd be nice to explore in style without compromising too much.

And only one of those - the Clipper - is in any way a threat to the Orca.

The Clipper is also ugly and is stained with the blood of the slaves on whose backs they are built.

The Clipper is gorgeous, and those "slaves" did it on their own free will. Perhaps they should be more responsible in life. The alternative was probably prison.

Hidy ho all,

So my question is, why is there no love for the Orca?

There's three paint packs for the Orca .... how much love is that ! :p

The paint packs, including the military colors, hint at a future for the Orca in the devs' minds, methinks. Would you agree?

Players want their ships to be the equivalent of a scythe, whacking down all before them. They want the most maneuverable, tanky and powerful ship to take on others. The darling of the moment is a shieldless FAS. If it can't outboost, outmaneuver or outshoot they gnash their teeth and cry out loudly for a buff. Look up the Cobra Mk 4 threads. Within 20 minutes of the Beta being released, you'll find posts slamming the Mk 4 for not outperforming the Mk 3.

Orca is a nice ship. A rated, it's a very nice ship. Decent cargo and 18'ish jump range (D rated). Heavy and packs a wallop when ramming. Not great for maneuverability, but can boost over 430 m/s in some configs. Large hardpoint and two mediums gives it the same hitting power as a Vulture, but it is not a dedicated combat ship by any means. I have one and find it to be a decent mid-range trader, but a Python outclasses an Orca in almost all aspects. I've tried piracy in her as well and it's OK. May work as a miner.

1 large and 2 mediums does not = 2 large. Mediums suffer penalties vs. larger ships. The orca currently has no role. It isn't really good at anything.

The cobra mk iv is hated because it isn't a cobra. It's a disgrace to the name. It should be an upgrade to the previous generation. Cobra = fast with good maneuverability. It's like Ferrari releasing a slow and sluggish F50.

Model names mean something.

I have an Orca. It's the sort of ship you take out for a joyride once in a while, because despite it's large size it actually flies really well. It has a very good turn of speed and manoeuvrability compared to other ships its size, and the cockpit is a delight, one of the best.

If you have a spare few million creds burning a hole in your account then I highly recommend one. Nice for those relaxing Sunday afternoon space flights.

The Clipper is gorgeous,
I guess, if you like your ships to look like a tennis shoe from the '90s.

The response of a drone.

Tell that to the slaves dying in the mines.

Besides, comrade, the point went over your head - they are prisoners. Everyone is. The Empire are just a bit balder about the social structures that arise as products of capital.

I have owned an orca for many months. It is EXTREMELY weak for its price. It objectively gives you the least functionality for its price.

It's in the same price range as a python. Lets compare the pros and cons of getting an 100 million orca instead of an 100 million python.

Pros:
Tight weapon convergeance on orca
Boost up to 430 (but probably only around 410) on orca

Cons:
Can't land on medium pad
Missing 2 large hardpoints
2 class lower powerplant
2 class lower power distributor
lower max jump range
smaller fuel tank
less internal slots
192 T cargo v 292 T cargo
2 fixed slots on orca you can only use for cargo racks/HRP
half as strong shields (397 MJ v 202 MJ with A rated max class shield gen)
Very easy to snipe power plant on orca

I've seen people on the forums defend the Orca in the past, and I'm thoroughly convinced those defending that joke ship have either never flown one, or never flown a real ship.

The orca literally sucks at everything. The only point is that it can boost fast. It may have good weapon convergenace, but that means nothing when it has such bad hardpoints, bad powerplant, bad distributor, bad shields, and an easy to hit powerplant.

Add in less cargo space than a python, less jump range than a python, and an inability to land on medium pads, and you truly have a ship that is useless for anything other than a flying missile or docking sideways.

I'm sure in a little while you are going to tell us how you really feel.
