Drop ship for trading

So I traded my type 6 for a federal drop ship and its not too bad so far. Handles about the same, better shielding, more cargo and decent speed. Only complaints so far is that it's a bit expensive and DEAR GOD WHAT IS THAT RATTLING NOISE??

But I was just wondering if anyone had better ideas for a freight ship between a type 6 and a python that can land at outposts.

The Clipper hands down, but you do need the rank, however, I heard they removed the rank requirement for limited time only. I will advise you to jump on it as soon as you can. That being said, it cannot land in outpost but you wont care with that speed and style.

Yeah I had a clipper a while back but the issue is that my trade rank is at a point where the only worthwhile a trading missions require a high cargo ship that can dock at outposts. I will consider getting it incase I need large freight runs. But at the moment my drop ship can take 134 tons and travel almost as far as my type 6

Also ASP sounds good but don't think it can carry as much

Then the ASP is your ship, you are wasting Cr upgrading the Dropship for trading only. However, if you enjoying flying the Dropship stick with it then.

You can outfit any ship to do any duty... just some do "better" than others.

The Clipper cannot land at outposts, so that is out, though a better choice than a T-7 in my opinion as the T-7 cannot land at outposts either. But that is neither here nor there since you don't want to be limited.

The Asp is good, but I have a personal disdain for that ship that stems from infinite rail gun ammo and 100% accuracy regardless of configuration... I flew one once and it was decent. They can be outfitted to fill many roles and is probably "what you are looking for". Just not my personal cup of tea.

Problem with ASP is that it just doesn't have enough room. For example my drop ship has 136 ton (I double checked) an advanced scanner to pay for fuel and an automatic docking system along with a shield generator. Accounting for the scanner, shield and docking in an ASP I can carry just over 100 tons (2 free class 3s, 1 class 5 and a class 6)

Yep... weight the pro's and con's. Personally, I would probably go for the Asp between the two based on speed and jump distances (which is similar to speed). I cannot trade for very long, so the faster I am banging out runs the better for me. At the end of the day does the Asp jump range and speed make up for the small amount of extra cargo the dropship has? I don't know... Those are two ships that don't really interest me personally, doing a trade that doesn't interest me either.

Best advice, run the ship you like. Who cares if it is min/max. Your parameters don't leave many choices to begin with, so just fly the one you find more ascetically pleasing?

edit- We could make this fun. Post a Dropship build and I will build an Asp. Then we could use a hypothetical route from eddb (both using the same route/commodities but with the two different ships)and run some numbers to see how much we are making per hour... It wouldn't be exact, (no way to take into account interdictions) but we could come up with something that may be very apparent.

You also have to account for how many times the docking computer will slam you into the station, which is often...mind you I did the same manually landing the thing, very drifty on the rear end

Where is the rank waived? I'm grinding rank for it now, but I will absolutely travel across the bubble, even further, to pick up a clipper.

I fly an asp now, very decent trader/Miner. But need that 200+ cargo to start making real money trading.

They are selling discounted Clippers on Empire space without rank requirement after the recent CG. However, I play on PC so I don't know if we share the same galaxy?

So, I built both ships; Asp and Dropship just for giggles. I put an ADS, Shield (not the biggest), and ADC on both. No weapons on either, but some countermeasures and shield boosters.

Here are what I feel to be the important stats for trading.

Asp: 112 ton cargo, 25.3LY jump, 174.4LY range (laden), 100MJ shield, and a speed of 262/357 boost.

Dropship: 120 to cargo, 15.4LY jump, 54.7LY range (laden), 173MJ shield, and a speed of 178/297 boost.

I would take the speed over the extra 8 tons (even with your build you are only gaining 24 tons) and 73MJ shield. On anything over 15LY the drop ship is taking two jumps to the Asp's one. After a few runs this will make up the 8 ton (even making up 24 would be a breeze if it was anything over 15, and your laden jump with 136 is going to be even worse) difference pretty quickly. Not to mention if we are going on a long distance run, the Asp has over triple the range on one tank of fuel.

Only recently got rid of a drop ship here, was using it for mining more than anything else, which its actually not that bad at as it got a decent mix of module types and could carry enough cargo to be profitable while still carrying other bits. And when bored could also pull combat duties without actually selling anything, just needed to pick your targets.

Range sucked for trading though so seldom bothered, the armour also seldom seemed to matter, lost three of them, all due to failed canopies with 60%+ hull remaining.

Gone back to an asp, currently kitted for fighting and trading, the mining build is ok, profitable, but fancied a change, dropping back to the Asp-E also freed up enough cash to kit it out nicely, likely to stay here until I have the cash for something a fair bit larger.

Biggest issue I found with the DS, in a combat zone its big enough to draw fire, and small enough not to survive it, slow enough not to out run it and lumbering enough to have trouble shooting back - the Asp-E gets ignored.

ASP might be more useful then. I was mostly going to use the drop ship for shuttling between orang and Karid but should probably get something for longer trades. What's the price difference between the two ships?

My theoretical builds: Asp = 14.4 million; Dropship = 22.4 million.
