How do YOU land on planets?

Very carefully.

I found myself upside down and then looking at the re-buy screen; but that was rum related. Might have to work out what this G stuff is all about. Sooner or later.

All pips to shields, and belly-slam! Hard landing for the fearless.. I have had a 6A shield vaporized and taken hull damage to boot sometimes...

Nimble ships:

Deep dive straight at the ground, FAO, boost away from the planet surface at the last second and smooth out.

Less maneuverable ships:

Less dramatic nose dive, but same procedures.

Trying to maintain a 45° angle while keeping my Cutters nose straight onto the commodity market (thats the important part!). Then, on exiting glide, I start my docking computer - voilà!

But I agree - not very silly. :)

Haven't tried above 2½G yet. And I dont wish to either really since I expect it to be rather awful.

Landing also depends on object size. Tiny moons you can land faster on than you can dock at a station. Bigger planets takes longer time, plus you have to be careful. When you come out of glide, boost towards the pad and if your assist isn't reducing your boost speed. Then you need to pay attention. :)

Supercruise, stop (almost), planetary station (centered on the planet in front of me) in the center of the screen, full speed down (down?) to the planet, will drop at 24,5 km above the ground, boost, speed 50%, pull up. My fast drop record 23,4 km above the ground.

Edit: new record 21.6 km

I always land with a beer on the dashboard, the amount spilled serves as a way to both measure the quality of the landing AND to improve future attempts.

I find it fairly easy - step off into clear space, maintain a vertical alignment, let gravity pull me in, and be prepared to bend legs on contact to absorb the impact.

Works pretty well at heights up to around 1.5 metres, providing the landing area is flat and level. I've only tried it on a 1g planet though.

When trying to land on a heavy planet I somehow managed to set down on a Sentry.

For some inexplicable reason the port decided to open fire on (and rapidly destroy) my python. Can't imagine why

Very gingerly, at around 2km/hr with full pips to shields, clutching a feather in one hand and a four leaf clover in the other, and shouting the incantation "oh my gawd! don't crash! don't crash!"

On hindsight it would probably be easier to land my ship if I wasn't clutching stuff in my hands.
