Great New Article About Elite Dangerous

I frequently see either "Mobius is sucking the life out of open" or "Mobius is an insignificant less than 2% of the player base and so can be ignored", so which is it?

There's not really a contradiction here. Yes Möbius is a minority of the whole, but they are also a significant portion of the organized community. Just imagine if the 20,000 players hiding in Möbius were suddenly visible at community goals? That would massively alter the dynamics of the game.

If even 1% of those players decided to protect CGs as bounty hunters, then groups like SDC might be "complaining" of being "harassed" by armies of do-gooders. Not that they would mind it one bit.

Personally I can empathize with both extreme stances, and while I respect people's right to play they way they want, I also think that something is lost when the community is splintered and segregated like it is now.

But there is no brute force solution that can be made now that won't result in a loss of players. So the only solution I can see is for Frontier to slowly and gently coax players into Open with at least some bare bones assurances of relative safety in high sec, and if course some acceptable in-game (non-banning) punitive measures for hardened criminal types and sociopaths.

But never forcing anyone to do anything they aren't OK with, or out outright banning players who haven't violated any rules and are just playing the game their way too.

So far, this seems to be Frontier's long term strategy.

And if you DO want to play by yourself.. why should you be allowed to manipulate Open play?

Oh, that's simple.
Because FD makes the rules and so far has not bent to a bunch of bad players trying to blackmail them into changing the game into something pretty much just them want to actually play. -shrug-

And they probably tried to demonstrate how totally unfair solo play is by staging a "covert" Operation at Eravate and Adle's Armada (who are PvP and seem pretty "pro open", too).
Got stopped in their tracks. :D :p

And despite being a "solo and PG" player, I do not think Open needs any more rules and agree that it might need some compensation for the potential risk of encountering hostile players. However, the fact has to be accepted that open is not a game mode all players would enjoy. And being new or experienced, good or bad at pvp has little to do with it.

"I was in Eve for five years," he says, "in most of the top tier clans. A lot of our culture comes from those Eve clans. Have fun and blow things up; at the end of the day, that's what Eve's all about."

He does know this isn't EVE I hope. :D

Article is all right, but much ado about nothing. They react to a "bunch of clowns" post by putting on big floppy shoes and red noses then kick PvE without warning. What bravado. Never been a shadowban advocate, but they seem to want it badly.

I've quoted you, but really I'm replying to everyone who's questioned me in this thread.

To be clear, Mobius is a symptom of the problem NOT the problem. The problem is private or solo play. The feature makes Open play feel barren and empty.

But to add insult to injury, players using private/solo play are able to (and do) troll Open players by abusing the system control/PP mechanics.

You don't want players messing with your game, but you're off playing private or solo and you're messing with other people's game.

If it were up to me, I would be asking "Which is it?"

Do you want to play totally by yourself or don't you?

And if you DO want to play by yourself.. why should you be allowed to manipulate Open play?

You're confused. Remember that the mode (S/PG/O) selection is a social filter - it' allows you to dictate who you see and when. Mobius group is nothing more than a collection of like minded people. (Cooperative players)

By design, and it has been that way since well before the games launch, all players in all modes effect the BGS equally.

I'm not the confused one here.

You are.

I'm asking why they should be allowed to filter themselves out and still impact MY game play experience.

So far the only reason anyone has for allowing that is "Because it's allowed"

Is that really a good answer? I don't think so.

Because open and the potential for PvP is an option it is not what the game is built around. The core principle the game is built around is the bgs and dental to that is all modes effecting it. The game could feasibly have been solo only and still have had the bgs multiplayer.

Devs or Sandro at least has said this MAY change for PP but not the bgs in general

Members of a PvE group are highly unlikely to be bounty hunting players at a CG

I think it's a perfect answer .. that is how the game was designed and the fact that you don't like it isn't my problem.

Deal with it.

Edit:
Is that how you feel by the way about the XBox players ? They impact your game and you can't do squat about it ..?

Because it is how the game was pitched in the kser. The game JUST made is ks goal. I am convinced that without the Möbius types the game would not have made it. Don't forget Möbius is a bodge as it is. We were promised multiple open modes with different rules in each with auto bans if broke. Essentially Möbius was meant to be an official on the front page mode.

20,000 people are very clearly voting with their feet on being able to control who they play with, and when and where they experience player vs player. That is not an unreasonable desire to place on a multiplayer game. On the contrary, FFA pvp MMOs are in the distinct minority.

If Open suffers for that, it's not Mobius's fault. It's very plainly on FD for not designing Open in a way that could accomodate the different desires of the playerbase at all reasonably.

Perfect answer? Nah man. Perfect answers design perfect games.

And I am dealing with it by posting why the answers "Because" and "Deal with it" are terrible answers and don't do anything to design a good game.

This will blow your mind...

But I feel that way about ALL players regardless of platform that I can't interact with directly.

Nah, FD designed open exactly to the desires of the open world, open PvP crowd. It's -as written in some previous posts- one of the least regulated MMOs on the market.
Now parts of the playerbase didn't use their rather extensive freedom with a bit of care and found themselves in a rather empty place and think that it's FD's job to push all the other players back to them.

I did say 1%. Surely Möbius has at least that many players that would be open to learning how to defend themselves and their brethren? Even pacifist buddhists invented Aikido.

Btw, I have seen this countless times. CGs where pirates where forced to quit the field due to overwhelming numbers of bounty hunters.

To an extent, I do understand the bolded.

I disagree with it, but I want you to understand that I get it.

bait and switch is never good. But if that was the design intent that ended up making this game get made, then it's doomed for failure.

I rather share his sentiment. It might well be how the game has been designed but its bad design imo and a source of frustration. Instead of having areas that are safe and dangerous everywhere is the same level of peril, and they chuck in some solo and pg system instead. Seems like a short cut. In my view its covering up for some serious short falls in content and game design.

It also explains why I never see anyone. The odds are high enough without having seperate gaming spaces. MMO and all that, where are all the players? I'd argue its bad for the game.

You are right. Nobody should be able to affect anyone gameplay experience in any mode. Only Open mode with no-PVP allowed is definitively the solution!

Irony aside, Do you realize that:

- People in different time zone may affect your gameplay
- People you are not instanced with may affect your gameplay
- People on X-Box One (and probably PS4 in future) may affect your gameplay

Should there be separate simulation per time zone (per country), system, in order not to affect YOUR gameplay?

Everyone plays on the same back end servers - whether that's solo, private group, open, XBox users and (probably) possibly PS4 soon.

Accept that there's players you can't see / interact with and more importantly don't want to interact with YOU and move on,

Mind not blown ..
