OH TRUST ME, FD has made it rather clear on where they think I and other Xbox players can put our opinion things. You spelling it out doesn't make that any less salty.

ing into the wind is all we can really do these days.

Well, if you indulge it that, can I advise you to stand upwind... you're getting wet.

Damnit you beat me to the comment about spashback.

Lets be honest though, I'm sure FD would love to make the game work perfectly for everyone but sometimes it's not possible, especially when you mash an MMO, simulator, nostalgia, rpg and arcade game (plus others) into one.

So lets see... The choice is between letting 20,000 players quit to please you, or you quit because you're upset they can play where you can't get at them?

I think I know how that will end.

I don' see why people have to quit but something seems a TAD off when the entire games design and developer engagement appears to revolve around ~20k players.. out of 1.5 mil? Perhaps the rest of us should quit although I'm not sure 20K people could pay the bills.

Might be an idea to read some of the steam reviews, I'd say way more than 20k players have left and moved on. But who cares right? Its only a particular type of player thats important apparently ?

Few points:
-Why is your "Play it your way" more valid than theirs?
-I'm included in that 20,000 and I play more open than solo.

-Why should they quit? The loss of 100 players in Open is financially much more appealing to 20,000. Why should they be forced to play your way?

Arguably you are the new archetype of player since the original game was entirely PvE...

Why not encourage people to go to Open with events and tournaments instead of validating everything that the PvE people think about the Open players? As part of the Fuel Rats I often hear that they are the first positive Open experience they've ever had in Elite and that tells me that Mobius isn't successful because of what it offers, it's successful because of the failure of Open players.
I also don't think Open is as quiet as you make out but thats a different discussion.

Edit: On the balance thing, try comparing a 6A shield in a T type ship to a multi-role or combat ship, or any other ship and come back to me on the subject of balance, it's practically impossible to defend against PvP and trade because every cargo rack you add makes you less well equipped than your adversity and therefore requires additional skill to win. Piracy, PvP and what SDC do are 3 completely different things, one is after cargo, one is after a challenge and one is after explosions and controversy, let's not muddy the water between those.

The fuel rats are great. No denying that but remember, they can ONLY work in open. They have no choice. I would argue that the very best "emergent gameplay" in ED has been the Distant Worlds Exhibition. That has spawned the most imaginative things to do with SRV's and ships (some of which I think the PvP groups would love such as the "whack a mole" competition or the SRV demolition derby). The publicity has been great, the videos good marketing tools and over 1000 participants. It is not in open,it is a group.

You need to remember that the "food for thought" here and presumably at FD too is not "what will upset you more".

In fact, the real "food for thought" would be "what hurts the game more for everyone, FD included: 100 people quit who played in open or 20000 people quit who never played in open". I can't speak for the entire community like you do, nor can I speak for FD but I am willing to bet the last 40000LY of my current exploration trip that losing 20000 people is probably worse for the game than losing 100 even if, and this must be hard to believe, it wouldn't benefit you.

speaking of thinking: the 20k members figure has been thrown around so much ... now it even is used to imply that '20k players' might quit. sounds impressive. no, wait. it's ridiculous. nobody sees that this figure is obviously a blatant exaggeration?

note i'm not taking sides, here. sdc's act was just a handfull of spoiled childs having fun, and mobius are making great publicity of it. seems all okay to me, the whole issue is nonsense. people must be mightly bored to make such drama with this one.

food for gossip.

I don't think "forcing" people to play in open would work - they just wouldn't play - they'd go play No mans sky or something instead.
Just give folk who want to have private groups better tools to moderate those groups.
I see a lot of folk get upset that solo/private affects open - I can see the argument , but I think there are other things needing attention in the game more than that.
Only thing about SDC griefing in Mobius that annoyed me, was it meant it made open way safer for me.... and I don't want it safe, I fly solo in open and go out of my way to look for blockades to run - those TOC folks at Obsidian orbital recently made runs in and out much more entertaining - after farming 32 tons of meta-alloys I need something challenging to spice the evening up :)
I suspect what most online games need is something i haven't seen since Everquest - in game GM guides who basically play npc's and cause havoc (release the dragon on the lvl 1's - remember that one EQ vets ? :) ) - that way we'd get some excitement , but one would hope without the leakage into real life trolling or Isis or whatever boring drivel always seems to happen with the average John Q Troll.

Fuel Rats can work in Private groups too and the DWE is also in private.
Could always have 2 galaxies , one the size of the bubble for pvp and the normal one for pve

No but you are also not reading the posts. 20000 was simply a number that one poster said was the number of people who could quit and it wouldn't bother him/her. That is why you are seeing that number a lot when people are replying the that poster. Nobody has until right now related this to the size of the Mobius group.

Food for thought: What will upset me more?

100 players quit who loved and played in Open?

20,000 players quit who NEVER played open so I never saw them anyway but who were constantly allowed to troll my experience anyway?

I'm not going to miss 20,000 people who quit. Not when they don't play in Open and not when I have to constantly play in fear of them deciding to troll my experience via the BGS.

Make it Open play for all.
Merge the platforms.
Let them quit.

I'll always care more about the people who actually want to play with me than I will about people who apparently despise the rest of us already.

Thats cool that you care a lot about the things you care a lot about, but guess what? Most people are far less into you than you are into yourself. FD will gladly take the money of 20.000 players who dont want to play with you if the only cost is losing you and 99 other solipsist.

Something I noticed, as an Open player: many of the diehard Open advocates on the forum seem to consider Open to be Solo with the other people serving as 'more advanced NPCs'. "I want to build Death Stars so others must pay me toll", "I want to have the biggest space ships so others have to tell me how cool I am" and "I want people to beg for their puny lives and give me stuff". Thankfully the people in Open are generally quite unlike these people. :)

To your first points: MY points are NOT the only valid points BUT.. they are more valid than: "Because" "That's the way it's always been done" "That was the KS promise" It's not "MY way vs. Their way" it's "Actual solutions to actual problems vs. Pretending there isn't a problem."

Understand, as Xbox player I'm only going to miss people I play with. I would also say that FD doesn't lose money if those 20,000 people quit. FD already has their money.

"But Guy, they would also never buy paintjob or addons again, that surely would make them feel a loss of income"

Again, I'm an Xbox player, so I can't say I feel bad about them losing income on features I also don't have access to.

I think Open events are brilliant. HOPE THEY OFFER IT ON MY PLATFORM.. Open on Xbox is more dead than you know.

To your edit: I think piracy is really broken, especially when anyone who does get interdicted can submit and then High wake it out without any worry of actually having to combat a pirate. So in that sense, you are correct, it's a different issue and off topic.

Wait .. what ?! You're an xbox player .. arguing over a PC group ... whom you will never meet even if they did play in open ... you've been trolling me. Well done, and welcome to my ignore list.

Those who whine about solo/group/open are brainless monkeys anyway - just ignore them. People play in a mode which suits them, and no one else has a right to even whine about it (if I was a mod, I'd banhammer hard anyone who'd come up with *anything* related to pve vs pvp or alike - and not just in forums, I'd banhammer their game accounts too).

Enjoy?

Particularly after Brussel attacks, it's an insult to victims' families.

Kind of like players comparing them to ISIS?

That's probably where they got the idea, and decided to run with the absurdity of it.

Edit -
"We've been called terrorists and worse than ISIS," Alberts says. "It's just a mockery of that. Music is music. Just because it sounds Arabic doesn't mean it's ISIS music. ISIS do not represent Islam. You know they burn musical instruments? ISIS doesn't have music.

Have you actually read the article?

I'm thinking that if everyone played in Open then the game would actually feel some semblance of balance.

I mean, think about it.. Traders maximize their profits when they don't have to worry about pirates right now because they don't have to kit for that.

C'mon.. that's trash.

Ok, I'm making some progress :D

A lot of people on the forum (PVE, PVP players) want the same single little thing: Play the way they want.

The problem is that when other people mess with the way they play, be it combat loggers, Solo players, Pirate/Murderers, etc.

And then we end-up with hundred of OPEN/SOLO/PG topics, which bring nothings to the table because the same arguments are used over and over.

The problem is that FDev cannot change radically the design (game ecosystem and server infrastructure) of the game.
Example: the failed Criminality update of last year

If there was open only, you wouldn't have many Traders trying to maximize their profit. They would be extremely rare (if combat logging was not possible).

Something which upset me is the Term "Carebear" given to traders, because most of them do like PVPer but not focusing on the pewpew. They select and fit their ship according to their environment:
Jump range, Cargo size, shield selection, chaffs, weapons, etc...

If player piracy was more common, THEY WOULD ADAPT and not try to maximize profit anymore but look to SECURE their profit , ie run Blockade Breaking ships.

That would make PVP piracy even more difficult than PVE piracy, as:
- no sane trade player would use some ships like T7, T9
- the cargo hold would be smaller than what they use in Solo/PG
- most trade ship would run with Shield Cell, Chaffs, etc... so kind of combat proof ships

Is it a shame that Open feels empty?
Yes, it is.

But Open only game mode is really an utopic solution as a lot of things would become broken and the traders population would quickly shrink due to the risk/reward imbalance toward them.

Hey, since I'm on Liqua's ignore list for being an Xbox player, someone want to explain to Liqua just how exactly the BGS works.

Liqua's confused and apparently wont see my posts.

Lol. The snipped about Mobius "infiltration". Guess them infiltrators feel very manly now :D ... (and as a female I can't do else but laugh my rear off due their stupidity).
And as a male I laughed my s off at all this 'reasoned justification' for 'unreasonable action'.
