[Distant Worlds] Be right back!

Once you have caught up, then you can take the time to explore, and once you reach Beagle Point you can spend the next 25 years returning to the bubble. My advice is to honk scoop to catch up, and then start enjoying yourself again.

Too much bad stuff

May I make a suggestion.

I am currently flying a ship that doesn't have the same legs as a 'typical explorer' so keeping up with the main fleet is a challenge in itself.

I have basically written the outward journey off entirely as a jump>honk>scoop activity. That's right, I'm only looking at the system map maybe one in ten systems. Maybe not even that. I log in, plot 30-ish jumps and do them. Then if I feel like it I do another 20. Then if I still feel like it, I will have a little look around. Io found checking the star became a road to disappointment because I would want
to go check those things out, but I would fall behind if I did.

Not looking is a serene road which is allowing me to keep up. Once I reach Beagle with the fleet then I have all the time in the world to explore as I meander roughly homewars.

So I crashed...

Wish me the luck - or rather the will and stubbornness - to finish this and I will see you out there.

Keep up the spirit. This expedition is an once in a lifetime experience in ED. There will not be anything like it again. As WhiteRose & Rikk said, you have all the time in the world after BP.
Good luck :)

Update: Today I travelled almost 10.000 ly, so it seems an end will come into sight, therefore spirits are rising - This will happen.

@ Whiterose, Rikk, MacrosTheBlack: You are of course right, there will be plenty of time afterwards. And thanks to my notes and EDDiscovery I can, at that point, explore into detail the two routes I have taken. That seems a fine long term goal.

Maybe not exactly like DW. But I doubt this will be the last deep space expedition. I suspect that when more content is added down the road, most of the people group/open may find themselves on a similar (if shorter) journey. ;)

"It's happened before, and it will happen again" - A quote from one of our favorite Sci-fi series, eh?
You better hurry up, get that arm working and then join the fleet :)

Edit: What me? well I promised 40t Palladium in the 100% hull prize; slaving right now in the bubble to earn it for the lucky winner. However, payout may not come to pass; with the current attrition, the galaxy is definitely on my side :D
(maybe just invest it in another red Anaconda and then head out to BP? sounds good to me)

Oh bother :(

About a kylie from Sag A dropping in from WP12 (yes a little out of order) and somehow managed to plummet to my death :( 100% pilot error, panic and gnashing of teeth. And there I was planning to catch the main fleet next weekend....

Oh....and I was still on 100% hull until this brain malfunction just to rub it in a bit more..

I feel your pain, CMDR. Keep up the spirit.

So I crashed...

After a couple of weeks doing my own stuff (ooc: Vacationing in Hawaii), I was rushing to catch up to the rest of expedition.

After two sessions (sunday and monday) fast-travelling through and visiting the camps for waypoints 9, 10, 11 including Sag A* and 12, only stopping for earthlikes and such, I was ready for WP 13.

I took off from the nice pointy cliff at Gagarin's Reach, diving down the canyon, wanting a last ride before travelling on.

Down there, not thinking too straight, I made an impulsive decision to swerve right to ascend along a rough looking cleft - Didn't judge the inertia right, and got thrown into the cliffside.

Hull at 38%...could have handled that, but the canopy was gone as well...So this was it.

With five minutes of life support left, somewhat stunned, I thought about dropping out in an SRV and dismissing the ship and wait it out. But that would be a real sad and lonely story, so I chose otherwise...

Back at the bubble I found myself at some starport on some planet, where I apparently stocked up the last of my supplies before taking off for the expedition. Feeling rather down and angry at myself, I immediately took off, wanting to get on my way again, after all I now had 44.000 ly to catch up instead og 12.000...

I then caught myself, stopped and returned to the starport to get restocked...and calm down.

I took a bit of time to think about if I wanted to put all that time in again to catch up.

Alternatively I could set out to recover the most interesting of my data. There was the ringed earthlike with a ringed moon, the eartlike orbiting a waterworld, the earthlike in a white dwarf system and all the other goodies.

I came to the conclusion, that I did want to catch up, and took off for real, starting to speed-travel, making a beeline for waypoint 13 since I still want to visit all camps. This time I was not stopping for anything but scooping.

Now, after two more sessions (tuesday and wednesday) and about 11.000 ly out, I am struggling to keep my motivation going. The routine of "jump - throttle down - check star - adjust accordingly - throttle up - honk - scoop if possible - jump" is getting on my nerves.

I am an explorer, I want to stop and explore, check out that ring, scan that earthlike or water world, land on that big landable, and generally see all the amazing stuff that is there.

But I am not doing that speeding like this. I am not even looking at the system maps now because I know I will not be able to resist. And if I do not, I will not have time to catch up.

And I want to catch up. To be there when history is made, enjoy the camaraderie at the camps, travel further than was possible for Erimus on his first expedition, and also actually do some prospecting...

I might soldier through this and catch up at some waypoint or other, but right now it is a struggle with tediousness and I feel myself wavering.

Wish me the luck - or rather the will and stubbornness - to finish this and I will see you out there.

Was it Jose Wales that said something similar to this... "Dyin' ain't much of a livin'... "?
You are out there trying to kill yourself speedballin' with the mistaken belief that you might be missing something way out there in the middle of the veritable "Somewhere"... which is ACTUALLY CAUSING YOU TO MISS something right where you are.
-
If you would like to be "Part of History"... there is something ya gotta remember. History happens every day! As long as you participate (ie...keep living, keep discovering, keep moving... not necessarily faster... but ever forward)... you are part of it.
-
Some will tell you "You can explore when you catch up"... but THAT really misses the point of exploration doesn't it? Gotta meet the schedule.... gotta be on time.... gotta pressurize every "stinking" thing... Sorry ... but
NO... YOU DON'T!
Deny yourself the things you like to do.. and guess what... misery ensues.
-
No one of consequence... (me, that is) thinks you should do what makes it enjoyable to YOU. Take the time it takes... it will still be out there... whether you decide to high tail it or stop and smell the Roses.
-
There is still Plenty of History to be made... and all the time in the galaxy left to make it.

So I was close to waypoint 17 when I started to wonder if anyone had bought enough onionhead for the party at Beagle Point. Also the Anaconda actually has paintjobs now other than bling and midnight black friday. It took me two days to travel the 33kly back to the bubble. It will doubtless take me at least a week to catch back up.

Ok. I did repair and sell 57 million credits of data. In future I'll hunt for Barnacles in distant nebula at a height of 1km. But the most important reasons was onionhead and marine blue paint.

Sigh....500ly down, a darn long way to go..
It would be seriously easy to give up. Perhaps it is fortuitous that my whackamole impersonation took place a few hundred ly shy of Sag A....so I still didn't get there. Because that's a real compelling reason to get back to where i was and then actually make Sag A and Armstrong's landing. And once there....well no point turning back, may as well finish the trip to BP. I think if I'd already had Sag A in the pocket it might have been a whole lot easier to give up and go finish some RL projects instead.

Sag A* is the easy part of the trip. I would keep going if I were. I was wondering a bit too if I should continue right around there and now I'm at BP! If you are plotting long, 1kLY, plots and it seems like the numb of jumps just doesn't go down, then plot 200ly routes. It seemed to make it easier for me. That way you can look at how many jumps you have left and think "Oh, only 10 more to go before I reach my target!"

It might have been a better option to do that. If you die in your SRV then you can choose to return to another ship in the bubble and sell your exploration data apparently. I haven't done it myself but it would have been good to know when I was worried about getting stranded in remote location and no ability to prospect the materials to jump back. I don't know if you need to own a ship in the bubble or not or whether it gives you an option of a free sidewinder.

Once you have caught up, then you can take the time to explore, and once you reach Beagle Point you can spend the next 25 years returning to the bubble. My advice is to honk scoop to catch up, and then start enjoying yourself again.

That's pretty much what I've been doing since my trip back to the bubble for repairs after waypoint 5.
I should reach waypoint 21 tonight.
