Where is the news regarding 2.1/Engineers?

Seriously, I feel like I'm illiterate, but I can't find any details/news about 2.1 being released for the past couple of updates... do we even have a release date?

This is starting to annoy me, actually. I wish they'd just give us some new toys. :)

I know that the update is fully ready, but there are a lot of things in there so maybe just roll out some of it?

If the engineers aren't ready, at least drop the updated crime-and-punishment system. At the moment it's looking like six months between significant updates!

There's a pretty good summary of the update here. That's obviously incomplete too, since we know little about looting yet.

If you roll stuff out you have to manage that, that means devs have to be available to fix issues/firefighting because it's all live.

Pretty sure it'll just be heads down right now, anything else is a distraction.

From what's been said already I think it's going to be a push to get it out in time.

I did find this new feature today ... https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=241211

Youtube vid a few posts down, not a massive addition but a rather cool one and one that makes a big difference for me.

The best thing to do is just let FD do their stuff. I myself am setting little personal tasks in preparation for 2.1 (like getting the cash for A7 thrusters on my Corvette and some left over for the new Huge/Large weapons)

There have been enough updates where the basics weren't right and as bitstorm has said anything you release you have to manage, draining resources.

I would rather hear nothing, let FD get on with making sure the whole thing is tested properly with all their devs focused solely on getting it right.

That means when the beta is released there are less things to fix (as there always are in beta cause you can never get everything sorted in an alpha test, not enough people playing) meaning there are more people to focus on those fixes meaning less bugs find their way into the main game.

You get the foundation wrong, doesn't matter how well the rest of the house is built (right, I'm going to be quiet now because you should always shut up when you starting saying phrases that could appear on a cat poster).

It's very frustrating waiting so long when the update was promised earlier, but then again some recent updates have generated quite a bit of hate from the community, so I understand FD wanting to get it right.

The issue is that FD has completely swung the other way on it. Instead of releasing the update just before prime time, they've now clammed up completely and aren't communicating with the community which, it needs saying, paid for this in advance, with advertised delivery dates.

The issue would be lessened if FD could tell the community what's going on with the update, what's going into it & how it's shaping up.

EDIT: Just realised the term "recent updates" in reference to the last major updates is no longer accurate. They weren't recent.

EDIT 2: Just saw 2.1 has been delayed again. Why? Why not break these tasks up into the other updates? This might seem less daft with some explanation.

I was really wondering why they didnt release some parts of the update that were complete but you guys do make a very good point that it would take their focus away so I have to change my mind and agree with you.

Some explanation is needed from FD of the why. They dont have to tell every detail of the update of course but something like "well since you all are being supportive heres the deal we found a major flaw and it does this to the game"

Also where does it say its getting pushed further back????

I can appreciate the wanting to know more information, I also understand that to tell us somethings planned and they don't make it into the update will cause more issues then not telling us. It is a no win situation for FD at this point. They have a lot banking on 2.1 and want to get it right. So they are being quiet, and working on it which is the best thing they can do at this point. I am sure information will come out as the release date for beta grows closer and they have nailed down ok this makes it in, this waits for 2.2 and this is scrapped till season 3 or maybe never. We won't know and thus we can't complain they removed that one item, or the WOW you added that in, we didn't expect that, That is great news.
.
My biggest concern is that so many are saying 2.1 is going to be a huge update that no matter what they do, many will say it is not enough. That also has to be a concern for FD. They delayed 2.1 saying it is a massive update, but with what we don't really know. The one thing it could be is massive code changes that do not relate to a lot of game play currently but will lead to it. So if that is the case the moaning of is that it, without realizing that the changes were massive and will wield rewards but it will take time. The thing is we don't know, and till they know for sure, it is best to wait and hope for the best. Just don't expect massive changes in one update, it could be, but I would rather bank on some nice changes limited in scope and be pleasantly surprised if it is more. The last thing I want to do it expect massive changes I want and get only a few, I will hope for a few any anything beyond that will be very welcomed.

The latest information we have about release of 2.1.

I was not aware of today's delay till I actually opened that link.

Just shocking, they're talking about delivering the first update in a series planned for a whole year halfway through it. I don't know how they plan to keep on schedule unless there's no content in the other updates promised with Horizons (which would end Season 3 before it begins).

Worried about this.

There is a few sayings in software development...

'The first 90% of the code accounts for the first 10% of the development time. The remaining 10% of the code accounts for the other 90% of the development time!'

'A computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any invention in human history–with the possible exceptions of handguns and tequila!'

'If it doesn't have to work you can meet any deadline!'

FD have the ambitious goal of releasing 4 major updates this season - and already that schedule is blown to bits. This may be from a variety of reasons, but I suspect the following:

- Some feature or other hit a snag where if to be implemented properly requires some core module to be at least partially rewritten which in turn due to a plethora of dependencies cascades throughout that need be fixed. This takes a very long time, but if done properly should save a ton of work later on.

- Resources have been diverted to other projects for a shorter or longer duration. ED is not the only title FD is working on, and until Season 3 and/or a PS4 version is released, the revenue stream from ED is somewhat limited. In short, they need push new IP out the door. As they now do with Rollercoaster Planet.

Now of-course, any software delivery schedule should be taken with a truck-load of salt. Estimates of date of delivery from the devs is at best an educated guess. And the worst part is, you can not hurry these things up by throwing money and manpower at the problem. It takes weeks if not months for new hands to get so familiar with the existing code that they can contribute something new to it without creating an unholy mess.

So in short, one just need to be patient - and hope the wait is worth it.

.

This is my wager. From memory a lot of the smaller problems in ED stem from some earlier design decisions. Realigning the game with the current direction is no doubt a large part of the delay - just would be nice if we didn't have to speculate on it after paying (in my case) $160 or so. The community as a whole has been remarkably patient for how disruptive these delays have been.

They have already said there are teams working already on 2.2, 2.3 and season 3
.
sometimes you just need to sit and go with the flow, as for releasing bit at a time, if you went to a restaurant, would you want your meal 1 element at a time in any order or would you prefer to wait until the whole meal is ready so you can eat it all together as its meant to be with the flavours complimenting each other?
.
I'll quite happily sit and wait and chat with my dining companion and wait while the chef completes the meal rather than have bits of it

I draw the line at having to order breakfast because dinner still hasn't arrived yet.

EDIT: My inferior brain did not comprehend editing this into my last post. Apologies.

Personally I enjoy a good breakfast at dinner time.. it's called High Tea :)

Updates will arrive when they're ready.. which is precisely how they should..
