Recently, a commander was harassing me at a station by repeatedly scanning my ship while it was parked at a long-distance station in an attempt to fail my Shadow missions. I found that I can defeat the ganker by logging off when I hear “Scan Detected”. Since the hangar prevents the commander’s weapons from hitting my ship, I found that I can log off before the scan completes because the 15 second timer doesn’t apply. With this method, you have enough time to log into Open, check the mission board, accept a mission or two and then log off. It works best if you practice the log off key sequence and remember to log off the moment you hear “Scan Detected”. There you have it. Now you can safely switch logging modes to get the best missions and not worry about gankers trying to spoil your fun!

EDIT: FalconFly suggested turning off almost everything in Solo before logging into Open to reduce your heat signature. And then turn on Silent Running once you log into Open to make it very hard or even impossible for commanders to detect you while you're in the station.
