Unreal Tournament

Is there people here who are following or playing this fantastic game? Currently in pre-alpha it's one of the most interesting projects at the moment IMO.
It's a no nonsense classic thoroughbred arena shooter that will be(and is at the moment) FREE. Yes, you've heard it right - free. Development of this game is fascinating because it's very closely tied and driven by it's community. In the future developers promise community market where talented people can sell(or give away for free) their own mods and maps. Thanks to being written on incredibly powerful and versatile Unreal Engine 4 we won't starve for community content.
Let's not get too far ahead, lets look what we get in a base game(i'd call it a platform, which fits the concept):

-Classic arena shooter experience:
No health regen
No classes
No loadouts
No perks
No other COD that ruined shooter genre
Even playing field for every player. Only your skill is between you and victory.
-It looks gorgeous, and maintains very modest system requirements.
-Maps that are designed with 'easy to learn, hard to master' idea, and are balanced to provide equal winning chance for everybody
-Classic UT weapon choice - every weapon has it's place and purpose.
-Snappy, precise, fast movement system. Being in control of what you are doing is the 1st requirement for a competitive arena shooter - and this game has just that
-Did I say it's free? You're no losing anything by just downloading it from official website and trying out.

Big daddy is back to show how it's done. To all fans of this type of games, in the name of Unreal and Quake - go and play it :D

P.S. No, I'm not working for Epic Games. I just like this game, and it's development process.
P.P.S. Let's not mention DOOM. After multiplayer beta footage this game can be declared dead.

I'm a big fan of the original 1999 Unreal Tournament. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Deffo have a look at this. Pre alpha you say? Looks better polished than some main released games I can think of.

I was a big fan of UT2k4 at LAN parties.
Shock rifle instagib ftw! :)

I have to admit I've not played much multiplayer FPS in recent years. I'll give this a look.

I just tried the tutorial and got obliterated by the bots. <sigh> It looks like it's going to be a hard battle for me not to finish last. I might have a chance against people who get called away from their keyboards for a long enough duration.

There is a ranking system that will match you with people who are considered to be equally skilled. It takes some games to evaluate you though.

Edit. Although I'm not sure it's working as intended yet :D

Thanks for the heads up. I played the original UT in '99 and several of the later versions for almost 10 years. I liked the original best for its fast pace (oh, and the announcer of course: "HEADSHOT!!!" :)). I'll give it a try.

If they can get a player base of one or two million then maybe there's a chance of one or two players being at the same level as me. Until then I'll resign myself to last place. <grin>

The announcer says "HEADSHOT!!!". He also says "MULTIKILL!!!"... I have no idea if he says "ultrakill"

Definitely a market for this sort of back to basics simplicity gameplay in the fps sector. Yer battlefields and cods and all that have their place but sometimes you just want to run around and shoot things.

Of course there are no two people exactly alike. But the point of leagues and classes is to match players with people who are roughly as good. You have to agree - it's better than not having any kind of match making at all :)

Matchmaking is great. At least if gives me half a chance. Is there a way of seeing how many people are playing?

I believe not. Only within HUBs, and only players who are idling there will be displayed. Also shows matches in progress. You can see HUBs when you click on 'Find a match'.
Or you can just click quick play, and hope to get something decent :)

M-M-M-M-MONSTER KILL.. KILL...kill...

I played the original back in the day, didn't realise they were making another, looks interesting!

I played the classics and am waiting for the release of the new Unreal Tournament.
