Distress MSG

I got as far as guessing the first 5 characters are "hello", but given the letter pattern doesn't match it's not a straightforward letter-substitution encryption (well, obfuscation). And gave up.

I think this thread is a magnet for annoying people. Or smart people. But I'm going to go with annoying people.

Well, I've been called both. Occasionally by the same person.

As for the key: the answers are in this thread. Although, thanks to one specific CMDR, our fugitive had to change the keys. But the new key is also crackable - even by a complete encryption newbe like me[1].

zlny isivdvxnur xzykl mx ggyaeqrc kar, rgojy vjghntk yni ynvjgh vamyk xjjmtaw.

Regarding those of you who managed to crack this without the hints: is there any way to determine which cipher type is being used? Or is this simply experience, or some cultural/scene/background knowledge?

[1]My only qualification is that I've read Cryptonomicon.

I read this a few years ago, pretty much the only reason I spotted the cipher type... http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Code-Book-History-Code-breaking/dp/1857028899

And yes, I've apologised to Sparneejuah for being a muppet and posting the key & original MSG in plaintext. Got exited that I figured something out! Doesn't happen very often!

So... I've seen the posts popping up in this thread throughout the day(s) and am wondering exactly how to apply the "posts must be in English" Forum rule....

That is a tricky one, technically it's all in English, and good natured i might add, but i'm sure if you pm Sparneejuah they would be happy to pass on the various keys used, wont hear them from me though, if I post them (again) I'll be put in front of a firing squad!

Now that you mention it - that book also was once on the list of books I want to read.
Cryptonomicon was very interesting... one of the better (and longer) reads I've had.
