Maybe this has been said before, don't know, i have not read all of this stuff.

Could that dotted line be, not a code or coordinates, but a visual representation? A map?

It's in a good position, for the mystery. But everybody and their dog has been in that corner and found nothing.

And what if the ".,.. ......,. ..." is the pattern of a sentence. Replacing dots with letters, commas with apostrophes and spaces with... well, they remain as spaces.

...probably another bad theory, but I was thinking a lot about this particular thing.

I still have to question if performing a complete surface scan of planetary bodies is necessary. As I said in an earlier post I've never seen a single surface scan pop back with anything but generic text. Even the details for Earth make no mention of it being the birthplace of mankind... just the standard, "outdoor world with water-based life..." text. The only real benefit of performing a scan of ever system would seem to be making sure we've spent enough time in the system to detect an persistent POI or other signal sources.

I would recommend that if we encounter any earth-like worlds or ammonia worlds we should approach them closely from the dark side. It would be interesting to find a planet in the Rift with city lights...


Oh yes I fly around the backside of the living to see if they sparkle too.

As lead researcher its up to Dommarraa to tell us mere lab assistants what methodology he wants us to follow.

I don't disagree, I don't expect any thing's going to pop up on a DSS and say x marks the spot. This probably has less chance of success as winning the powerball lottery, sacrificing a chicken over the galaxy map and following the blood splatter might work equally as well. It's something to do as default idle until a new clue drops in between chasing whatever other idea some one pops up.

Re-reading the whole thread this really jumped out at me and got my mind whizzing, Goemon quoted a post from Agony_Aunt to which the meat of the post is this,

"Mike Brookes also mentioned something tantalizing in a stream not long ago about how there were things to find by flying away from certain systems (off the solar plane) in SC, but as far as he is aware, nobody has found them yet... whatever they are."


I got me thinking that most of use tend to scan a system in linear fashion, 2D when we should be scanning them in 3D. Michael Brookes has also stated that "there are things hidden to find in the black"

With this in mind, and as it relates to the Rift mystery. I can't imagine FD seeding just one system with something unique as that would equate to 100's of millions to 1 odds of finding it, that just seems absurd. So unless it is a special named system which I doubt, our odds of finding it have actually increased, we just need to be searching in 3D mode, sensors to max range, eyes glued to the screen and nav panel.

This is still a daunting effort, but what if two CMDR's were to team up and one goes up away from the solar plane, the other goes down from the solar plane, this would increase the chances of discovering a signal source of which you can be sure is what we are looking for. Deep Space doesn't just mean out in the black. I really think this is the missing part of our searching efforts.

This game is mind-boggling. That's my thoughts. Which systems would you even start in?

I am going to re-align myself with the RR line as some oooohh shineys have led me astray, and starting out near the edge of the Rift, and go from there, I will be spending significantly more time in SC that's for damn sure. Any system in that general area is a potential candidate, although some of the clues provided may eventually give way to a more specific sector name we should be looking at in time,, hopefully.

If it is like the new conditions around finding the Voyager probes (needing to be within 1000ls to be able to see them) it is absolutely insane. No one will ever find anything without some form of breadcrumbs and clues leading you to a system where one of these objects is, and indicating somehow that there is something there to find.

Agreed not easy to say the least, but I do believe that (insert Drew's clue of choice here) will help point us to the right sector/system eventually, and in time more clues/info will come from inside the game. But 3D scanning is the most overlooked aspect, next to honk jumping.

Also fits the bill for Drew's all you need is patience, wanderlust. etc...

I wasn't commenting on the Formidine Rift mystery, as I am sure as you say we will eventually figure out clues, or get new clues, as I am sure Drew would never leave us in the lurch (right Drew?). I was commenting more generally, in the sense that if there are these "other things to find" out there that MB mentions by flying randomly off the solar plane and SCing around in random systems for hours on end with no breadcrumbs and clues to guide you, good luck, no one will ever know where to start looking, let alone find them with the 1000ls limit. Even turning the search and mystery into yet another grind, and grinding every system in the Rift with crowdsourcing (assuming that is even possible), calling it science and recording them in a spreadsheet won't help in this case. All the spreadsheets in the world aren't going to find objects with 1,000ls detection limits, without some major clues.

I 1000% agree with you, ridiculously hard, if nigh impossible, if it were not for Drew's books, and clues on the forums I bet 95% of the community would have absolutely no idea about the Rift. I think FDEV forgot just how big it really is..

Hopefully that means they are doing away with the 1,000ls detection limit for non-signal source objects, like the Voyager probes, and allowing them to be found dependent on scanner range as well. It would be nice if they came out and said that.

All sorts of patterns can look like rows of letters, dots, punctuation or "code" though...

It seems to me that this isn't so much looking for a needle in a haystack, but looking for a needle in a field of haystacks in a bread basket region of fields on an agricultural world and we're not even sure we're on the right planet.

Those hot "O" class stars are hard to miss when they're all lined up like that. You can see the for parsecs. That first image you posted really does resemble an arrow, but then those Sharpless 171 objects look like a great many things depending on what angle you view them from. A lot of them also host one or more blackholes so well worth a visit!

Back in the days before I had an advanced discovery scanner this is exactly how I went about finding astronomical bodies. My scanner wasn't powerful enough to map the whole system so I'd angle "up" to get a top-down view of the system. Then I'd fly "down" and try and spot any moving "stars" which I could then identify as planets. Might be that the aliens are hiding in plain sight and have technology that prevents our scanners from reporting back data. If so then the only way to identify their worlds would be by "Mark I eyeball" as Lt. Gaeta would say.
