Would optional mission related video footage add anything to the game?

Using the forthcoming character generation to add a face to the person who's giving you the mission would add a bit of character, as would the ability to interact with them in some way to find out more about the mission or negotiate with them for a better deal. There was something similar in FE2.

I'd settle for just a pop up comms window and a face on your contact for missions or even with NPC's, with maybe a drop down window where you ask them to surrender or taunt them or be nice to them by winging up and escorting for a fee. I don't really think a cut scene is necessary.
Anything that would be likely to become repetitive will ultimately be seen more as a nuisance, or be requested to be updated time and time again, when I'd rather they focus on the gameplay aspects of the game, as opposed to the "pretty".

As always- only as long as they can be skipped.

No cutscenes if I can't skip'em at ANY time.
Thanks.

.... and, apart from the initial "Ooooh - that's new" period, they would be skipped as they would add to the time taken to complete any mission, etc....

Expended effort into something that will (probably) be skipped does not seem to be a great use of finite resources, in my opinion.

No-one watches a cutscene more than once, so no, for all the reasons give by posters above. They're a massive waste of development time imo. It might be nice if Frontier did live weekly newscasts on GalNet however...

I'd say yes if done right, for me there is a massive "disconnect" between me and the game world. It "feels" like a computer game, there is no real immersion for me.

Just no.

Go and play Mass Effect.

I wish Elite had the production values of Mass Effect, engaging storyline and characters (most of the time!) with brilliant graphics and effects. I can still remember the first encounter with sovereign, then the opening battle on earth in ME3.....utterly brilliant sci Fi gaming. If Elite could manage a 10th of that then I'd be happy.

Cut scenes are ok in a linear plot / story type game, though as has been said they only get watched once or twice.

Elite is not a linear game, it's an open sandbox player driven game, so cut scenes make little sense, and would become extremely irritating after a short while.

So no.

You watch cutscenes the first couple of times, and after that you skip them every time. Especially if you know the cutscene has to be procedurally generated.

Unless the scene adds information. But then you are forced to watch every cutscene every time, which I suspect will wear thin very fast.

Pretty horrible idea. When the main problem of the game is repetition, adding another static element that will quickly wear off won't help a bit. And also, its completely unrelated to gameplay.

All in favour of a bit of animation and character interaction, but not in the form of cut scenes. An animation incorporated in to the mission details when you view it from the bulletin board would be nice. I don't know how you would handle character interaction, but it would have to be interactive to be worth while. Cut scenes are just a time sink (imho).

Hmmm, no. I get where you're coming from, but I think it would be tedious after the first few times and not justify the development time.

Adding cutscenes to Galnet new items could, however, be really nice. I'd far rather watch a video feed about all the lore and goings-on in the galaxy than read tedious text derived straight from the BGS database. If FD want to have hands-on control of this stuff then some higher quality content material would be great.

Yeah basically this. I doubt that there could be sufficient variation in videos for the same mission type to make it worthwhile after the nth viewing of the same thing.

Generic news event cut scenes in Galnet news, yes that would work pretty well and add a bit more life to the galaxy.
Cut scenes spliced within the game play mechanics, no thank you.
Elite was always about seamless game play.

I would not like cut scenes as they interrupt the concept of being the pilot and actually looking through the pilot's eyes. Suddenly having a third-person perspective would be very jarring to the rest of the game.

Instead of cut scenes, I'd prefer to see this sort of content delivered via a contextually appropriate manner - for example a screen on the ship with a video feed.

Cut scenes in Elite?

I would hit the uninstall button and walk away, lifetime pass or not.. cut scenes do not belong in this game.

Sure thing, why not throw in some quick time events as well while you're on the track of things gamers hate.

Quick Time events were awful, some Apple exec must have done a deal with some game industry exec to make us all suffer such torture!

hmm a not bad thing.. as long as it's not annoyingly anoying.. coz some of us gonna do mission like over and over..

and we might as well have a scenario/story along with that.. so some MMO lovers can have that fighting-worldboss feel..

This. Very much this.
