Lucky You!

I am in the process of making dinner, ignoring the natives and about to dismantle my PC to take it to the computer shop to have a new video card installed. I don't expect to get it back until saturday morning. So no E: D for me this eveing.

Ian follow these steps:
1) make sure ya earthed a wire to the radiator should do it for most cases

2) open case
3) remove cables attached to graphics card
4) remove screw from bracket at back of pc
5) locate clip on pcie slot to release card
6) gently ease card out of slot
7) unwrap new card
8) insert card into pcie slot and push into place
9) add screw back to blanking plate at back of pc
10) attach cables to graphics card if required
11) fire up pc and make sure it all is ok
12) install drivers
13) close up case
14) enjoy new card ;)

Its not as hard as everyone makes out these days of modular pc's its the psu thats the issue today and cables. Back in the day when chips had to be changed with a chip extractor it was harder.

I distinctly remember using a lump hammer to fit mine... I think you need it to remove the wrapping from the GPU. I note you also missed the step where he removes the fans to cut down on wind noise. I think a crow bar is best for that.

Without going into what I would normally explain as an "Educated long winded rant about how much I disagree; and why you are misleading the discussion" , I just point out a relate-able scenario. ( It's probably going to be long winded )

Blizzard had a "10 year plan" for Diablo 3 when It was being developed and released.
They gutted the game during its first beta.
The playerbase was filled with "negative forum posts"
"It's okay guys, it's just the early stages of the game"

They backpedaled...hard. 2 solid years of realizing you don't design a game to be finished in 10 years, let alone 2 years.
All the points made about what the company would or wouldn't do to the game, they "humbly" folded their cards.

As of now, the game has gone in the "righter" direction, putting more emphasis on what the players "need" and want, over profit margins.
That being said, they are still a corporation, and have enough ego to fill a small US state; so the game and development is still plagued with repeated mistakes.
It's also filled with the same "have" and "have not" forum posts, including from the company itself, because it's starting to edge back into thinking it knows best....that 10 year plan coming to fruition.
There is an abundance of players who feel "appreciative" for what they have now, and also fearful that it could be taken away on a whim if Blizzard gets mad.

These are the types of folks that diminish progress / fairness, and allow for repeated mistakes in development. They forget that even game companies work for us, not the other way around, just like consumerism in the real world. One should not tread lightly in fear of retaliation, nor should they praise whatever is laid before them as if it is a rare commodity.

One does not have to be "cheery" to enjoy something, but one must have been dreary to know if it is enjoyable.

On the topic of the quoted text above itself and its intent, I would suggest that people refrain from presuming that the game is just "going to get better" as the year goes by; or that it's going to take 8 more years before we can appreciate the scope and depth of what is in store of the game. That's a classic "long con" and/or risky investment / excuse. It's why investors don't call themselves Bond Buyers. It's also misleading to say that at any point we are "just paying for the base game", or that there has been "a few bugs". If the game needs 10 years for it to be 'adequate" enough for criticism ...then we are most certainly paying the lion's share of this deal; and those that keep forking over money every year are needlessly throwing money into the wind. To that extent, their business model and ethics are held to question, and the whole premise unravels.

Let's just call like it is. A game that's asking for your money year on end, still "in development", and requesting that you excuse everything until its done in the next 8 years.

Personally, I'm still waiting for last years "season" of the game to finally get finished. But that's naive, because they moved on to Horizons. So in my case, and others, the game is actually never going to complete. As is the cliche way of game development; and testimony to their business plan.

Talk about dark side, this reply is pretty much the ying to my OP yang.

I have enjoyed over 300 hours in this game and compared to many here that is actually quite little. Only game I can think of that I spent that much time has been FA4 and Skyrim. For any game that's fantastic value for money. Like really cheap entertainment. With some more waiting and money it is only gonna get better.

I personally thought that diablo 3 wasn't much good and after a week I put it down. Not sure if that was a great comparison.
Still...I always welcome some salt to fully appreciate the sugar!

That wasn't dark, or salty.

Also, I've put in many times more into Diablo 3 than I have Elite..and I've put in about 240 hours into Elite. But I wouldn't consider that an indication of anything, like you're trying to do.

I also don't infer that "time played" equates to any quantifiable indication of how 'good" a game is. A clicker game can have you putting in hundreds of hours into it, doesn't mean it was a roaring success. The majority of my time in Elite ( as I'm sure it is with many others ) has been doing "idle" content, like waiting in supercruise. That is a terrible measurement of how much time spent in the game is "enjoyable". Some games ( like Elite ) require you to put in dozens of hours into things you may or may not particularly enjoy ( like questing in a certain area in an MMO, or grinding in general ), to get to the part where you do enjoy.

The whole "price per hour" and "hours total" arguments are way too subjective, and riddled with inconsistencies / fallacies. It's a good indicator of whether or not you enjoyed a game enough to "stick it out" for a long period of time, but leaves out a ton of context about what in particular you were doing that added up all that time. Then there's the folks that see much of the game as an achievement / collection , rather than "playing the game" entertainment. That can rack up a ton of hours ( and too many devs depend on that aspect, citing it as "replay-ability" to con people into thinking a 1 hour game is really 8 hours or more ).

Well it could be the PSU too, MB etc depending on how old his rig is, I would ask him but he did the honourable thing and fell upon his own sword

But they said

....about to dismantle my PC to take it to the computer shop to have a new video card installed.

There was nothing about other computer parts / activities involving said computer.

It's like insinuating that "I'm going to get new tires" can mean "I gotta get a new transmission".

To my knowledge, there is a 10 year plan for this game that started less than 2 years ago.

Had a nice long discussion about this in another thread, suffice to say the cake is a lie. Or rather the cake is made up by the players in this instance. It is the current meme replacing the old vertical slice meme of beta and you need to use your imagination meme of last year (at least that last one could be argued as useful and not outright misleading). The "10 year plan" seems to originate from something quoted by someone who met with a dev one time, it is essentially hearsay and isn't backed up by anything Frontier have publicly said or done. It's probably safe to say there is a plan to continue development and there are many things on the wish list that may or may not one day be implemented. But the 10 year plan meme really needs to stop being trotted out, the game can, should and will be judged as it is now. Anything that gets added in the future can be judged in the future, but there is no guarantee that there will even be a season 3 let alone a season 10 so let's just focus on the game today and discuss it on that basis.

As a side note Frontier didn't label this game early access and indeed they intend to keep charging for expansions/season pass content. Therefore they themselves are calling the game complete by any normal definition. What we get in the future is something else added on top that we need to pay for.

Doesn't matter how it's labelled.. fact is the base game has been, and is being, regularly updated.. regardless of whether or not you pay for expansions.

To be fair, Horizons was labeled "early access" when it was first put on Steam. The horizons page as of now still says: "Elite Dangerous: Horizons Season Pass is currently still in development. The full version will incorporate feedback from the wide community and further improve polish, balancing and optimization"

I don't believe them personally, but all devs say such inspiring things.

That being said, you are correct. As a distinguished Youtuber prominently says, "Once you start asking money for it, its fair game."

Doesn't matter how it's labelled.. fact is the base game has been, and is being, regularly updated.. regardless of whether or not you pay for expansions.

Except its not.

Work on "the base game" stopped as Horizons was being finalized, and its been months since any meaningful update has gone out ( IE: since Horizons shipped ). And they explicitly stated that you will only get future updates / content if you own the "Horizons Season" ( and each season thereafter ).

They will more than likely push out sim updates to areas that would be impractical and impossible to separate from the base game ( like faction updates, current ships, etc. ) but those are far and few between at this stage, and they're never going to just "add" content for non expansion users unless it's impossible to distinguish it ( like backend content that's absolutely needed, like say, an entire Station or UI element that you can't just phase out for non expansion users ).

And at the very least, work on any content for the base game is entirely dependent on whether or not they have expansion content ready and/or it's not tied to needing expansion content for the new updated "old" content to work. So at best, people who don't own expansion content have to wait extra months to get needed patches to "the base game". And at worst, it's a lost cause because they've given up on updating the base game entirely ( which is pretty common for devs to do ).

In a practical / cynical point of view, they couldn't update the base game adequately or regularly when it was "current year"; how could that possibly change when its not "the new hotness".

Well at least next season the loud minority won't be complaining as they'll wait and buy it when its finished ;)

You must have missed the point of the arguments last fall.

Or the fact that while "Horizons complaining" may stop, the next expansion complaining will continue right where it left off...for the exact same reasons as before.

By that logic...they'll never actually "buy it", because it will require you to pay into the next expansion to get the previous content.

Not sure how you come to that conclusion.. not seen/read anything that confirms that statement myself.. actually everything I've seen/heard is the exact opposite :)

You could always wait for the season to finish and then make a judgement on whether its worth buying.

Yes, you can. Doesn't mean anything about what I was talking about though.

Last fall, when everyone was trying to figure out what was happening to "Normal" Elite in consequence of the expansion coming out.

yeah I have stopped complaining/suggesting anything since you get warnings and told you will be banned so very careful as to how you make suggestions. Its just not worth my time anymore. I have given up. Mostly just disappointed

For someone still playing the vanilla Elite on the Xbox... and waiting for 4 months for a patch to fix it, I can see where that's coming from.

If (big if) and when season 2 reaches the Xbox, it'll be nearing the end of season 2 content for you guys on PC with the recent 1.6/2.1 patch being delayed until at least June or July realistically.
