The Formidine Rift - Part 2

Myself and someone on Reddit reported seeing an extremely bright light in normal space. My encouter was in a combat zone or compromised nav beacon (don't remember which one).
Unfortunately I decided to finish a kill before making a screenshot and the light had gone when I was done fighting.

I had something like this planetside a couple of weeks ago. It was like a bright white ellipse of light shining directly on the SRV canopy. Really freaky. I thought I had found something amazingly significant then it just went away... No idea what caused it.

I am seriously looking forward to Galaxy Map bookmarks in the upcoming Engineers release. It should make it easy to place markers along the R/R line.

Yes that will be good. I wish the Universal Cartographics would release or allow us to buy data so we dont jump to places already searched.
It could only benift all now, if the data was available and understandable on the GalMap, even at a cost.

I would gladly spend 10s or 100s of millions to obtain all handed in data on the upper and lower 3rd quadrant.
and have that data reflect into/onto my Galmap to facilitate my expedition.

My wife still owns a standalone GPS (SATNAV) system because she just doesn't trust her phone to get her from A to Z. So every couple of years we pay to update her GPS with the latest route data. You would think that Universal Cartographics would offer a similar service. It would be really nice to be able to see on the Galaxy map what systems have or haven't been scanned... or even what percentage of a system has been detail scanned.

And another thing... if my HUD can tell me information regarding the government of the next system I'm jumping to in the case of a populated system... why can't it show me the star class of the system I'm jumping to if it hasn't been explored? That data is available in the Galaxy Map... so why can't it be fed to my HUD? I could skip a lot of hull damage if there was an indicator on my screen telling me that he next system was a neutron star or blackhole so I'd be prepared to throttle down.

I will follow where the clues lead me, but once I'll have exhausted all my hypothesis,
I'll stop the search. For me there is no point in brute forcing it.

Unfortunately I have to agree. So my anaconda is just drifting in post-rift space while I wait for new clues that will help narrow the search area, and have a bit of a holiday.

Sorry, guys. Been a little absent of late. Have had a bit of a rush at work and a few family things have kept me away. Hoping to get in some search time over the next day or two :)

Holy crap, just realized this thread hit 100 pages xD

Best of luck to you commander, I'm heading to the rift but I haven't arrived there yet. I'm going in my Diamondback Explorer, the CMS Brugmansia!

With any luck I'll be back in the Bubble within the week. My exploration data should be enough to put me in a well-kitted Asp and I'll head toward the Rift. Perhaps I'll see you there.

Perhaps we will indeed! I'm going to have to try out the Asp Explorer when I get back, already have a name in mind for it the CMS Pelargonia! Could have bought one before I made this journey but, really I don't see a whole lot of difference between the Asp and the Diamondback Explorers in terms of jump range. But once we are able to walk around on our ships the Asp is definitely going to have a bit more stretching space in it.

Do you have a name for your ship? Or at least one in mind?

Nice one! [up]

I play CQC when I get bored out in space, it's a good simulation game that REALLY helps you get better at fighting. I'd dare say that Pilots should watch out for ELITE explorers rather than elite combatants. Lots of time to play those sims...

I always give my ships a name. The first Diamondback Explorer I took to SgrA* was the "Shackleton". My current Cobra Mk III is the misnamed "Better-Late-Than-Never" ... I had intended to take her to or near Beagle Point even though I missed being a part of the Distant Worlds' crew. I've turned her around in hopes of joining the expedition into the Rift.

The name for my soon-to-be Asp Explorer? I'm considering "Lusus Naturae" but won't make a final decision until I bring her out of the the outfitting screen.

There is no such thing as an 'expedition' to the rift, it's just a few of us pilots making a decree to venture into the unknown, there's no need to make it into something it isn't, something it shouldn't be.

On a lighter note, Lusus Naturae sounds like a pretty good name.

I only play solo. Being autistic, I don't make friends very well, so the forums is my only way of communicating in game.

I am rather autistic myself, it has been a major advantage in writing, though it makes the social side harder work. I only play in solo other than community events. I have a lot of sympathy for the 'lone wolf' CMDRs.

Cheers,

Drew.

I think 'expedition' is the right word. We have a loose organizational structure with some attempts to coordinate efforts. Obviously its nothing like Distant Worlds with its set waypoints and such but our efforts do fit the definition of "a journey or voyage undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose, especially that of exploration, scientific research, or war."

Do you have a particular objection to referring to our activities as an "expedition"?

Already made a post for that.

Man I hope this doesn't become another Distant Worlds thing, I came out here because I heard there was something out here. That should be more than enough to motivate any true explorer. Most explorers wouldn't even need that much encouragment. Just the realization that beyond the horizon there are worlds of such unimaginable beauty in a galaxy chalked with mystery would be enough to set any explorer's engines towards the stars.

I know of more than a few commanders who went to the distant worlds, and never came back, the blood of the wanderer was not in them, and they gave up when the realization of how long it would take them to once more lay eyes on their homeworld would take. Beagle Point has always been the Everest of Earth how many people once clambered to get to it's top so many in fact, that experienced explorers no longer wished to partake in these excursions. Once a thing has become common it loses it's mysterious luster. Sure you have those who are genuinely interested in the adventure, but there are still those who will do it because it has become the 'cool thing' to do, these latter ones are the ones hearts will falter as their passion may have truly laid with their destination, but not within the journey to get there. Once you go beyond the edge of the colonies of our species, and you are confronted with the enormity of eternity you begin realize just the true definition of the word loneliness. One can not help but feel magnanimity towards those who experience this for the first time, and only hope that they have the ability to survive the abyss.

It is the knowledge that where we go, no one else has gone before, each system that we blow our trumpets in, each planet that we place our feet upon, we can be assured that we are the first ones who sang our hymns upon bearing witness to Celestia. It is those who only worry for the outcome and not the adventure in getting there who are blind to her beauty and grace, the goddess of all things, it is they who will not be ready for the ravages of isolation and it is they who will stagger and fall as the presence of Celestia is all that will accompany them once they leave the bubble, and if they can not even recognize that, then they truly have nothing. See first how many return from the distant worlds 'expedition' and see how many have fallen to space dementia. For I know already, that not all will return, their souls have left them having reached their destination their goal, the one thing that kept them going. They could not fathom the return journey. And so only their apparitions are left, to eternally haunt these desolate halls, these corridors of unspeakable beauty, as though they were the petals of a cosmic flower... the galactic core, it's ovule.

Yeah. I read that. I've said it before: What we are doing exploring the Rift is entirely different from what Distant Worlds was.

Your very lengthy post doesn't give provide any material reason not to speak of our exploration into the Rift as an 'expedition'. Its not a bad word and is the word I use to describe all of my journeys into the black. I've mounted expeditions to NGC 7822, to the Core, to edge of the galactic plane. I'm very impressed by what Distant Worlds achieved and we can learn a lot from their experience.

Why am I heading to the Rift? Like you, I heard there was something out here. For 30 years now I've been looking for a place that, as a teenager, I really believed was out "there". I imagined myself a part of a certain society that included people like Rafe Zetter and Alex Rider as I traveled looking for one very specific world... a world that wasn't to be found.

While I doubt that the unlocking the secret of the Rift will result in my eyes finally gazing upon the surface of that world I do believe that it is the same desire that drives me to find that place that also drives me toward the Rift. That other like-minded folk are equally driven toward this end is a blessing and I'll be glad to join with them in a Voyage of Discovery, expedition or casual foray... whatever you want to call it.

An expedition can consist of may parts or groups..

Some can be there to view and report detailed information, others can be pathfinders, a more loosely organised group, looking for points of interest for those detailed explorers to take a closer look at.

There will always be individuals who are intrigued by any kind of exploration that's on-going and they may be in it for different reasons e.g. treasure hunters, people seeking fame or just those who are curious and want to do their own research.

The above has been true since exploration first began (and I'm not limiting that to the Elite universe).

Nothing wrong with carrying on as we are IMHO. It's working so far.

I think that if people want to get organised thay should be able to. I also think that if people don't want/can't join in with said organisation then that's fine also. :) we can and have all been working together using this forum. Some people only read the forums and are still involved. I don't think I'd have time to join a coordinated search but I sertanly wouldn't feel left out ither.
Each to there own. :)
We blaze our own trail...Wether we blaze it with others is entirely up to ourselves.

Guys not sure if this has been suggested previously, but.....Salome/Drew says that she went to BP in order to find 'something'. Was that something maybe/probanly a navigational marker?
I'm pretty sure that in terms of a narrative, as much as BP is an eponymous place, it shouldn 't play a pivotal role, since it has only become a POI last year.
Rather, I'm left wondering whether Salomes participation in DW served triangulating a place from one of the waypoints. For starters, I understand the RR line to be on Galactic plane Y=48.75. was any of the DW waypoints on that level?
Further, if we draw a line from each of the waypoints through other POIs relevant to our search (H&S nebula, Reorte, Riedquat, Sol, etc) where do the lines point to?
As usual when I get these ideas I'm more that two days away from the nearest PC with a galmap.... : (

Any thoughts?
