Just been killed :( in seconds

Really annoyed now.

My Asp Explorer, with Class 5/B shields and two (A and B) shield enhancers, was interdicted at HIP 93377 just now by CMDR <snip> and I was killed in just a few seconds despite immediate attempts to run away (I know...); I'm not a total newbie and what annoyed me is that it appeared the shields were taken down in 1 shot - certainly very fast indeed.

This CMDR's sig says they have a Clipper (I didn't see it just now), which is indeed a somewhat more powerful ship than mine, and is 'Average', again somewhat better than me, but really.... Is this truly legit?

This is my second attempt at a 'Community Goal', and the second time my ship has been destroyed while attempting to deliver cargo. I probably won't try again, it's too expensive (game money & my time) [downcast]

Naming him is not allowed on the forums. Anyway, an Asp with 5B shields and two boosters has about 250MJ in shielding. Two medium railguns do about 100 damage. So in three shots your shields are gone. An FDL could probably do it in one shot. The trick is hitting you three times in quick succession, but if you just boost away thats super easy: hes faster than you and you're pretty much sitting still from his perspective.

Oh, the 'average' beneath peoples names just means they posted more then you did on the forums, its no indication of rank (its actually not even a rank in game!).

Naming people will get you bannned pretty fast.
Don't go to CGs without ability to escape. If you can't afford one just ask somebody for escort, killer will think for a moment before atacking ship in wing of 4.

Thanks,

I wish the game stats were clear: I've heard about the 'MJ' rating of shield/weapons but am very unclear how it relates to anything.

I think it was one shot, though not clear: it was certainly very very fast. I wasn't sitting still (at least I don't think so) either, but weaving about, though I guess it may not have made enough difference. They did seem to keep up well with my boosted flight (i.e. ~380k).

Re Average - thanks for the correction. I'm 'Novice' in game; seems a strange rating given I have >50 kills already ... is there any way of finding out this cmdr's rating without actually hunting him down in a ship?

Why are you bullying the CMDR that shot you?
He did nothing against the rules.

CGs are open , maybe he is trying to make sure the CG never gets finished for his own reason

Hi,
Community goals is one of the only places lots of players are guaranteed to gather, this as you've noticed makes it an incredibly popular area for people that enjoy fighting and/or destroying players. In fact a lot of them are some of the highest skilled combat pilots in the game.

Clipper is a very fast ship, is it possible they rammed you, that can do serious shield damage and I expect was probably the cause of this. Also did you have pips to shields, they makes an incredible difference moving from 0->2 and 2->4?
Finally was the game lagging at all or any indication of a connection issue between you and the other party? Rarely (because elite connects you directly to other people's PCs) a lower connection makes it appear as if one attack has done immense damage whereas on the other players screen shows 2-3 attacks.

In any case you are quite right to avoid CG's unless you are experienced at running. I actually advise Clippers for CG's since they can simply run from most encounters with their eyewatering speed. Alternatively you can hit up a private group or solo until you feel more confident in your piloting abilities vs other players. Theres a few good player groups that mentor people in good PvP fighting and can start you off fighting players in equal ships like sidewinders so you can learn how to fly optimally and learn how to fight or escape better.

Edit: Mj of shield can be seen in shipyard apps here: http://coriolis.io/outfit/sidewinder/
Game user interface in shipyards is due an update which may see it getting more information possibly as early as in the next update (2.1).

Don't give up on CGs. They are fun and can be very profitable with a some effort. Unfortunately, they do attract some undesirables. Find someone to wing up with on the CG thread, or go in Solo, unless you are in a ship that can run fast - Cobra or Clipper.

Don't give up in the CGs because of this. Play in solo, or join Mobius.

If you are committed to playing in Open you have to realise that CGs are a very widely advertised honey-pot and the I-like-to-kill-CMDRs people know where you will be and what you will be doing. So fit your ship for PvP if you play in Open.

How would I find someone to wing with? I normally play alone.

Thanks.

I didn't know CGs applied in Solo mode - I thought it was Open only.

Ever seen my triple Plasma combo? Oh no, blown up CMDRs just see the insurance screen. :D

But seriously. ASP hasn't got strong shields and if you haven't got 4 to shields then you obviously gonna get bursted down pretty fast.

:)

Thanks Alex. Very useful comments.

Ramming me may well explain it. I did try to escape the interdict, but failed (I was better in the Cobra; the Asp isn't very agile), and failed at escaping after as well

Mostly, I was upset because it seemed that the only way this could have happened was some sort of cheating on the part of the other player, but I understand now that I was wrong.

I didn't notice any lag, and I'm playing on an i7 core and Fibre connection so that should be ok, though I am no expert.

I am not 100% clear on the following so hopefully if I get it wrong someone will correct.

First IMO best place to start is HERE.

  • Replicate your ship.
    • Asp explorer
    • 5B shields
    • 2 boosters - A and B)
  • At the top it shows your shield strength in total - 264MJ

Next create the enemy ship - Clipper. It can have 2 large and 2 medium weapons. You have to make an educated guess based upon what you saw, however most PvP-Combat ships use railguns as they do massive amounts of damage up front (ie 1st shot, if it hits, does large damage)

If they were rail guns and they were using 4 of them then that's:

  • a combined fire power of 172MJ (4 * 43) per shot
  • a total of 2 shots to drop your shields and do hull damage (264/172 = 1.5 ie 2)

Each weapon has a reload time which is why using the DPS numbers can also help you. Railguns have 22MJ DPS (damage per second) so to strip your shields using 4 of them, assuming all hit (and excluding pip management by you and shields recharging) that's 264/88 = 3 seconds.

So .. in conclusion, a clipper using 4 railguns needs to hit you twice and if they hit both times your shields will be gone in 3 seconds

you have to wonder if people that interdict like mentioned in this thread, also are interdicting bigger targets, if they truly are battling against the CG.

You likely don't know as much about pvp as the person who killed you. For example you might have been flying in a straight line, making yourself an easy target, or you might have had no pips in SYS, making your shields weak, etc. etc. etc. any player with pvp experience easily could have gibbed your ASP.
