I really don't think you can say that room-scale is pointless and it's just a demo. The standing experience is definitely a different beast and it's a new way of experiencing and playing in a game that's still to be exploited fully. I own a DK2 currently and the 1.3.0 demos in Dream Deck prefer you to be standing and i have to say these have been some of the best VR experiences so far for me. There is something about standing up and constantly having little sway in yourself and movement that makes VR scenarios come alive in a new way than what i've been used to.
I sometimes move my head more than i need to when i'm playing Elite on my DK2 because it gives a better sense of scale and immersion, for instance.
Most of the room scale experiences don't necessarily need you to be walking all over the place, but more being able to generally move at least a little and trick your body into feeling you're there. Add to that tracked hand controls and this bumps up the immersion even more. There is a lot to come in this kind of experience and game style for sure.
But back to Elite specifically, what ATW is doing is quite remarkable. I run a 980Ti so i'm not short on FPS, but still, i can now run fully maxed out on planets and get a perfectly smooth experience with minimal artefacts/distortion which is pretty cool. The Vive is still in its infancy in this regard and i'm hoping they get their code up to this standard sooner rather than later to help along the more graphically intensive games such as Elite.
Finally, as i own a DK2 and as i'm wanting something new now, i've gone for the Vive after much deliberation. Fact is they're both awesome bits of kit on the bleeding edge and they will both give the end user much fun for next coming months. A good time indeed to be gaming![]()
I did'nt say full-room scale is pointless, I said it is pointless (aside from the novelty factor) today with the cables. But for semi-room scale VR it's ok I guess.
BTW does'nt the DK2 awful colors and smearing bug you now since the updates?
