Exploring and feeling home sick

I'll see your Real Life shouty and raise you a still-as-yet not housetrained cocker spaniel. Bless him.

Cocker Spaniel would have been the thinking mans choice! Still managing a few hundred light years every few days though, not quite Buckyball speeds I know, but it'll get me there. Although I am thinking about renaming the ship to the 'Eventually'....

At least mine stays where I put her...for now

In the event that I head back and decide to do this 'properly' (Asp explorer, or at least a less combat-tooled Cobra) I fully intend to name her the 'Are We There Yet?'

Nothing improper about a tooled up Cobra! What is the OP flying? Does the longer jump range break The Tether discussed earlier sooner?

i for for one am hoping that at some point Thargoids make tooling up a neccesity rather than a heavy luxury...

To be honest, my Cobra is only tooled-up because I didn't have enough cash to buy a dedicated exploration vessel. When I named her the 'Insolvent' I wasn't messing about :)

Oh I'm sure the day will come when exploring deep space will require a ship to be armed and capable. These days of exploring in under powered weaponless crates will one day fondly be looked back on as the glorious innocent pioneer days of exploration.

Just curious as to how far my fellow players have travelled out from their home planet when it comes to exploring the universe. Also curious as to what craft was used and how you felt the further you left your home planet behind.

For me it’s no more than 2200ly and that felt like a million as I missed my home planet so much. This has to be the first game I’ve played where travelling so far away actually made me feel home sick :-( Am I the only one to feel this way about exploring?

I'm currently parked at Beagle Point, 65,279 LY away in a Type-7. The first time it hit me was at Sagittarius A*. OMG, the centre of the galaxy!! Since we were travelling in a group it didn't feel TOO lonely, until I set out to cross the Abyss alone while the others were having a mad SRV race. That's where I really felt how far away from home I was, and I still had another 10,000LY to go after I'd crossed it.

Before Distant Worlds, I had gone 7000LY to the Bubble Nebula in a Diamondback, which felt like a really long way.

I've been out since January 22nd, reached Beagle Point in late march and am currently up the proverbial creek without a paddle lost in the Abyss in my effort to find a "short cut" on the way home. Assuming I make it home, I'm looking at a July return, then a brief stopover to get some new livery & modules, then out again on the expedition to the Crab Nebula.

I don't miss the bubble, though I sometimes miss some of the activities that are only possible within. I've found exploring quite late in my ED career, but i'm utterly hooked on it now.

Not to brag, Newman, but......

Ok, I'll see your 65,427 ly and raise you 65,449 ly :D

Can't go further from this system even with j3 boosts. One of the moons in the area has Niobium, though, so I'll be doing some driving before I resume flying, see if I can find a way around this dead end..

Homesickness just goes to show how utterly awesome this game is!
My first proper trip out, I thought I'd gone soooo far. Got homesick after 2 months and couldn't wait to get back....after I installed EDDiscovery I found my distance away was......1400ly

I joined the DW expedition and made it to 10,000 ly before finding a Earth like and getting all consumed by homesickness - and headed back home. Funny thing though, docking at a station felt so....busy and claustrophobic. 38,000 and counting now and no desire to be in bubble, so it does pass eventually :)

You should invest in my new invention: baby stay. Its a combination of fluffy clothes and Velcro strips.

You do know that theres this Distant Worlds expedition going on right now? Thats why theres cmdrs bragging about their 65,279Ly distance.. :D

Ahem... and im one of them.. ;)

Don't we just know it! Us non distant world explorers are the forgotten these days :( I decided to take the long route to Beagle point just before DWE took off. I still have 20,000LY to get there even though I have done 92,000LY so far. But, when I get there, will I get fame? will I get glory? nope, 1000 hairy DWE commanders will have been there first, trashed the place and probably left the lights on too.

Genius, sheer genius....I wonder if it would work with 4 year olds too? Perhaps why I enjoy exploration on my own so much, my inner real life desires coming to the fore! ;)

Does anyone one else find EDDiscovery and Captians Log an aid to motivation once your out of the bubble?

Distant Worlds = Explorers stag do....

I don't get home sick. I do get bubble sick though. It's when I get sick of being in the bubble and try to get far away from it.

I've felt weird coming back before. Like an alien. And I've felt confined by the bubble, like a rat in a cage. But I don't think I've ever gotten bubble sickness. Maybe bubble apathy? Lol. Mostly, I feel like it would be nice to see something new. Bubble or black it doesn't matter to me :)

Previously, the furthest I'd been out was about 700LY in an DBX - I felt like I was a million light years from home. I wasn't homesick, but more scared than anything.

That's passed long ago now, though. No homesickness, not scared - just excited, wanting to go further every day. Each jump takes me to another place to check out, planets to find and land on, screenshot, etc.

Just completed my first trip to Sag A. Heading home slowly scanning and smiling. I'll then goof around and do stuff, then optimise a ship and head out and explore. Yes lonely, but why not !

Good job! And I hate you!!! :D

Part of me wanted to stick around Beagle and try to beat my distance, but then I decided that I wanted to come back in an extreme range Anaconda anyway, so I might as well go for my absolute best range from Sol in that ship.

So enjoy your crown while you can, Newman!!!
