Newcomer / Intro Vehicle Bay in Ships.

I recently bought Elite Dangerous Horizons on PC and I'm loving it but I have a few questions. I saved up enough money to buy an Eagle ship after I died and lost the free sidewinder with vehicle. However, I can't find a way to install the Planetary Vehicle Hanger, it says I need a Vehicle Bay but I can't find out where to buy that. Does it come on the ship and the Eagle just doesn't have one or am I missing something?

Thank you for your time.

Hey Psychic Donuts, welcome to the forums and to Elite Dangerous.

First, note that you can always go back to the stock Sidewinder whenever you die, even if you have bought another ship (you just won't get that ship back). This is a very good option for when you are starting out, because it means failure is cheap. When you are buying and outfitting a ship, always remember to have enough credits for the insurance ("buyback"). You can see this on your ship management panel (the right panel). If you don't have enough credits, you'll be forced to go back to the Sidewinder whether you want to or not!

A Planetary Vehicle Hangar is a module that you need to install into your ship through the Outfitting screen in Starport Services. This function is available at most but not all stations. You can discover if a station has the outfitting service by looking at it in the System Map. Also, note that not every station sells every module. The best place to outfit your ship is in a system with a "high-tech" economy. You can search eddb.io to find the closest system/station to you that currently has Planetary Vehicle Hangars.

Note that each module compartment in your ship comes with a limited size. The Eagle is a very small ship. Planetary Vehicle Hangars start at size 2, so you will have to swap out your size 2 cargo rack or size 3 shield generator! I'm sure people have used SRVs with Eagles, but I don't think it's the ideal ship for that task.

My recommendation is that you take that Eagle and do some bounty hunting, if you feel up to it, and save up enough credits to get a slightly larger ship that can hold a hangar without sacrificing too many other functions. I am particularly fond of the Cobra Mk III. It is a very versatile ship and will serve you well. But even the Adder or the Viper might work too.

Here is a video explaining the basics of outfitting. Note it's pre-Horizons, so some of the details have changed, but you'll get the general idea of how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xI8VhqA0DPk&nohtml5=False

Thanks, that was super helpful! I will look into saving for another ship. I have bought some fairly good weapons that I am using against pirates and such, will I be able to keep those when I swap for another ship?

Excellent question. At the moment, it's not possible to swap components (or cargo) between two ships like that. When you buy another ship, you will need to outfit it from "stock."

In addition to the above-linked eddb.io for finding where to buy ships/modules, check out Coriolis.io, which lets you mock up different builds. Not only will it give you the vital stats of your ship with that build, but it will also tell you how much in total the build will cost: it's one thing to be able to afford the base price of the ship, and another to be able to afford the ship plus "good" modules. :D

One tip: if you're planning to sell your current ship when you buy a new one, sell any upgraded modules first--that is, go into the Outfitting screen, and sell off the modules or downgrade to the cheapest available one. You sell back a ship for 90% of its sticker price (depreciation!), but modules do not depreciate. So sell back those "fairly good weapons" before you sell the Eagle itself in the shipyard, and you'll have a little more money in the bank to go towards outfitting your next ship.

Btw if you sell off modules/weapons to sell the ship you WILL be able you purchase them back in your new ship provided you don't leave the stations instance.(do not log out or fly out of station and jump to SC)
This way you can actually "keep" you upgrades from one ship to another, provided that the modules/weapons can fit onto your new ship...(Cargo can however not be swapped this way.)

You can even 'sell' some of the loaned equipment on the loaned sidewinder and 'buy' them back for the new ship for free. So you can get two gimballed pulse lasers even if you don't have the cash - nice if the new one has fixed (e.g. eagle) - I can't hit anything smaller than an Anaconda with fixed :).

Canyon racing sounds cool. How do players organize stuff like that?

I agree. Fixed hardpoints are a nightmare. Thanks for the advice!

Organise?
First find a canyon, I've parked an Eagle at "Inovik A" where there are a few. Fly along one as fast as you can as low as you can. Decide if you like it.
[Sorry, I have been listening to Sir Terry P whilst exploring but I have come down now [woah]]
Search the forums I think that there might already be groups doing that. I found it on a YouTube video. "Inovik A" has a shipyard and you can buy an Eagle there. (Handy for when you die and die you will. ;))
Eagles are quite cheap and handle well for low level flying.
If you can't find an active group here. Start another on the forums.

Oops! I've just noticed the forum. An Eagle won't be cheap, yet. You could do it in a sidewinder but would need to find a suitable planet close by and don't forget to dock in-system. So that when you die you are transported back to the last station you were in. And never forget* to have at least three times your insurance costs or you will end up back in the starter sidewinder on the next death.

It is a good goal to aim for. One that does not require ranking up or as a break from grinding.

* This is important. I and many others have learned from experience and it hurts.
** Very important.
*** I cannot stress this enough.

</Ooops! Back to Sir Terry. [noob]

How much does a vehicle bay cost. I know how much a planetary vehicle hangar is but how much is the vehicle bay itself. In case they come in class and size then I want one that is good enough to have a scarab in. No more no less

The only costs are the hanger (15,000-600,000 roughly) depending on size and the Scarab(s) to fit in it.

I wish they would lock these old threads - a necro of over 3 years isn't a record but for goodness sake hammer a stake through it.

Or either highlight the date of the OP in a way to make it obvious that it is over x months old or come up with some way of getting me to notice the date before joining in all unbeknownst.

Not your fault for being helpful and replying to the necromancer who was probably googly-result induced. :)
