Why do ships have insanely oversized cockpits?

Yucca plants do need a bit of space to grow well in. Apparently the flower alone can grow to 6' tall!

Over that, I'm 6'1" and I've seen more than a few that I had to look up at.

Not sure a ship would be a good place for something that large though, the variable gravity due to accel/decel, gravity on different planets you land on, really mess with them I'm thinking. Something more like a fern or ivy of some sort, probably be a better option, or something from some alien planet maybe?

I don't see an issue with any of the bridges/cockpits as far as scale goes, considering the sheer size of these beasts the scale fits quite nicely. From a VR perspective the Clipper has a bridge that doesn't feel too great, on the flip side the view from the bridge is quite nice due to that massive curved canopy.

The F63 & Imperial Fighter is the closest you'll get to a fighter jet cockpit whilst in VR, the Cobra is closer to an airline cockpit although a bit roomier. Anything above that and it's no point comparing it to anything we have in reality, the Vulture is huge, once you actually stand next to & sit in ships like the Python, FDL,T-Class/Conda/Cutter you realise that these ships are absolute monsters.

Given that it's only 8 hours drive to the centre of the galaxy and normally no more than a few minutes to the next station, I'm not sure we even need a seat ;-)

No cockpits arent insanely oversized, youre just really tiny [big grin]

Hah, that must be it. It's a midget universe!

Nah, was just thinking these things look huge, not only compared to fighter cockpits, but even bomber cockpits (which do have room to rest, a toilet, and even a little kitchen sometimes).

Yup - VR is what really gives some idea of size. Friend of mine was always convinced that the Eagle was the size of an extended cab truck until they tried the DK2 :D

A lot of the ships really do look like they were doubled in size except for the cockpit chair. Their details and perspective makes then look much smaller than they are.

Then again, keep in mind that even the sidewinder is supposed to have a full bed and bath inside for the pilot.

The cockpits might seem really damn huge- but remember that Frontier intends for the pilots to eventually walk or float around in them (as has been mentioned above). From both a "real life" and game-making perspective, you would want plenty of space in your ships. Keep in mind that they're also meant to be lived in as well as flown.

They need to be big:

Big esky full of beer.
A potted palm tree.
A parrot called Ernie that I've trained to swear.

And my collection of dire unlistenable post punk vinyl.

oh and a fancy Italian coffee machine.
The beans from Dublin are surprisingly good these days.

Should check out Star Citizen and the ships there. The single seaters tend to be quite small and have pretty tight cockpits, some of them at any rate, the dedicated combat ships built for the military. Those ships also make a Sidey look enormous, so... They recently released the Starfarer, hanger ready, and it's the largest ship they've completed so far, 100m long! People freak out about how massive it is and how much room it has in it. The bridge has 2 seats forward, pilot and copilot, which a captain's seat directly behind them in the center and 2 other seats back behind him on the sides. It's smaller than a Clipper or Python bridge by quite a bit however.

I've got a Cutlass, cockpit LOOKS incredibly small, 2 seats in a row, have to walk up beside them to get in, and it looks like there isn't enough room, but there's actually more than enough room to walk next to the seats. I have a 315 and 325, 2 ships of the same series, and the cockpit is actually nice and roomy, doesn't LOOK like it, but it is. I also have an Aurora LX(love that leather seat!), and that cockpit is a bit cramped looking, but there's actually a good bit of room once you get into the seat..just have to squeeze past the seat/cockpit canopy to get into it.

Ships in SC aren't as large overall as the ships in E: D, even so, the cockpits are large in most ships, plenty of room in them. Can't wait to see some of the really BIG ships like the Idris, over 200m long, a frigate complete with a flight deck.
