Horrendous Black Smearing

I think the problem is specific to Elite Dangerous. I tried two demos from Oculus Home - Henry and Lost, Henry has a dark scene at the very beginning and Lost is dark from start to finish and I did not notice any smearing at all. I also don't think it has anything to do with timewarp, my framerate is locked at 75hz most of the time and the smearing is very bad. When timewarp is active it doesn't seem to make any difference to the smearing.

I think the issue is the blacks are rendered too black, the black target should be a little higher than the default luminance range. Full HDMI range will likely make it worse?

0-255 is the default for PCs, generally. The 16-235 range is typical for video content. Absolute black should be either 0 or 16, respectively.

Using virtual desktop and watched videos and played other games. No detectable smearing

But

Smearing on the space themed background because of the blacks.

Virtually black gray == No smearing

Smearing is present in Farlands. It's not just ED. The only reason the DK2 worked fine before 1.3 is we could adjust colours, etc.
Let's hope Oculus allow us to modify settings, it might even reduce the Glare that CV1 users are complaining about.

The Oculus home app is horribly bare bones right now, but some form of hardware configuration really needs to be implemented soon... either that, or add the option to adjust colors/contrast to ED.

Blimey! I haven't once noticed smearing in Farlands. I haven't even been bothered by it in Firma which is set on the moon. In fact the only smearing I 'notice' is in the cinema

In farlands, when you are in the cockpit, turn around. Right behind you is a very dark spot doing "Carrie"-Black Edition impression as soon as you move your head.

Ah.

Tbh, I am beginning to get used to the smearing which in turn seems to reducing it's impact. I went out into the black and the smearing bothered me less. I reckon, because I was less bothered, I was turning my head less than i would do when trying to look for the smearing resulting in less smearing! :)

Washed out colors, no supersampling, gamut haze, saturation too high, yes the FPS is great, it would be its rendering a lower resolution with the dk2. I play with the cv1, in comparison it's like night and day.

Just tested Time Machine VR, which is nice relaxing game and no smearing, lots of black outside cockpit when "travelling" and black looks black, but if you look really hard, you can see that pixels are not off. So far, what I have tested, Elite is the only game with lots and lots of smearing. And very bad colors. Shame, because obviously ED is THE game for my vr gaming fix.

I tried that too! OK...

Much prefer Firma!

Same cockpit mechanic but more fun :)

edit - keep on topic me!!! No smearing detected in Firma.

Firma! Thanks for the tip, must test that one, looks cool.
I am proper enjoying this game! Such a cool use for VR. Your 'working' but your working on the moon... in flying pickups! Less than a tenner too!

Heads-up: You only use up fuel when you are without a crate; you can really lob the crates around and don't forget the other trigger is turbo. Ohh, on the "radioactive race" mission, you can leave the track to refuel on the landing pad ;)

I remember having this issue with E: D back in the Oculus runtime v0.4(?) days. ( Got my DK2 in january 2015 )
Unfortunately, I don't remember if it was random or due to an order to respect in the initialization process...
Since 0.6, black smearing was gone.

Just want to let people know smearing is a problem with the DK2 not only for Elite Dangerous but all other games I've tried from the oculus store that have very dark scenes! Animated bright disney/nintendo-looking type games are fine.

Oh c r a p. I was impressed by Runtime 1.3, at first. But the more I played, the more smearing and color problems started to bother me... With gamma slider all the way to the right, it is very playable and ALMOST enjoyable, but it does not change the fact that game looks like s#!t now. I'm not feeling my ship or the space around me. One reason I love ED is it's stunning visuals and unparalled immersion, but now I feel I'm just missing the show. What makes things worse, It is SO CLOSE to be SO awesome! I even tried to switch back to 0.5 but I couldn't make it to work for some reason... So currently I'm stuck with this. First time in months I just don't feel like I want to play ED or anything.

I really hope someone comes up with some kind of fix!

Edit. Heh, what is going on? I wrote c r a p and it turned out awesome

Same here I find now that sensational feeling of space does not feel so sensational anymore. Colors and smearing sucks big time now. But this problem is not just with Elite. Let's hope someone introduces some kind of color/contrast ajustment tool for oculus.

0.8 + SteamVR is the fix
