The Sidewinder-SRV-Explorer Challenge

Thanks commander for sharing this. I am preparing my own exploration trip - in a sidewinder - and I was told that landing without shields was impossible. After some practicing I can manage up to 0.6 G (I succeeded also some time with 0.73 G, but could not reproduce it consistently enough: out of the 10 landings twice 1% hull damage, which is unacceptable for the long trips).

Hi Cmdr...if you're looking for some explo-sidey vids on landing check out my thread here:

Good luck with the sidewinder exploration and let us know how you fair.

Great to hear about more Intrepid Cmdrs in Sidewinders
Cmdr Frawd's thread is certainly the place to look for hints and tips.

My Expedition is on hold currently due to health issues meaning I am not where my gaming PC is, so having to get my ED fix via the forums.

With health issues Abated; it is time to push forth

I've had many FSD failures Cmdr but never one that drops me out of SC...all of mine just stopped me from entering SC or Hyperspace.

We really need to have a meet-up on my way back from BP...that would be epic, two sidewinders meeting in deep space.

And Jermus, weren't you in a sidey too? A three-way sidey meet-up would be even better!

Indeed it would be awesome

Hopefully I don't mess up

280x GPU failed so am running on the on-board getting 30fps in open space on "low" graphics settings

Tried landing

Bad idea

Oops

When I hit the surface I thought it was all over

Ooh, that hurts!

I hope that the landing accident wasn't due to the low settings (otherwise there is little hope for me, as I also play on low settings and wow, if I only could reach the 30 FPS ;) )

Ouch! And you have shields right?

Edit: although going by your pic, no you don't

Frawd

No, I forwent shields in lieu of a 2 ton cargo rack (ever hopefully of finding something worth taking back)

Not blaming the low settings per se, just with the low FPS I was heavy handed on my landing approach, I have successfully touched down without damage since then

In the Core Proper now

This Gas Giant look like it belongs to some sports team

Have still be checking out the Metal worlds in the nebulae in case Barncales or similar can be found, didn't bring that cargo rack for nothing
2.6 G landing, Cadmium and Niobium, now I have 8 x 50% FSD boosts

This Drop in from Witch Space was a sight

Screenshot_0039_1.png

And loving the new extra strong Heat sinks that can be fired from Super cruise, survived a Contact Binary encounter and could deploy the heat sink and jump out from between them in SC

No picture, too busy trying to live!

Hope to be at the 26000 light year grid line by Sunday

A 2.6 G landing! How did you manage that?! Do you still have any hull left? I begin to wonder whethter we Sidewinder pilots have all nuts and bolts still together... ;) You do know that you need a ship around that cargo rack to carry whatever you find back to the bubble?

Indeed, extremely beautifull.

Don't blame you for not taking pictures. I myself had an encounter with a close binary also. Didn't need the heatsink luckily, so I guess you had some more to sweat than me.

And 2600 LY out, that is quite something!

Fly safe,

Did cost me a percentage of hull integrity, but I wanted to "get back on the Horse" so to speak.
I am sure Sidewinders have the reputation of being able to be repaired with a duct tape and No.8 Wire

Bring the ship down to 1 meter with the nose angled up so you are getting the "re-align" warning
then as you bring the nose down to align you touch down.

Tricky part is getting to 1 meter safely, I use FAOFF FAON rather than thrust, and are relying on A grade thrusters to be able to arrest the fall.
Also don't tip the nose up too far or you stern will hit the ground first.

Having Reached the fabled Neutron Star fields, I must say, when you have a 2 ton fuel tank and a 900kg usage per jump, replotting often is certainly a downside.
I don't have a Detailed Surface Scanner, so I'd much rather forgo the ~20,000 CR a Neutron star brings in, and avoid them all together.

Thanks for describing the technique. I still have some hull left, so I'll try that out on the next 0.5-ish G planet I find (and then up ;))

Been listening to Neutron Stars and white dwarves, both I the system map and the general point ship and listen.
Quite interesting, or space madness setting in, or both.

Crossed the 26000 line

Never Seen a Blue White T-Tauri before, it is a companion to a Ae/Be proto star, both spinning fast, so it might be on the line between the two

Down to 48% hull as an arrival was THROUGH a F type star in close binary of a M and temperature got super hot super fast before I stopped panicking and deployed a heat sink
Zero throttle was no defence against this hazard
Heat sink launcher 1 is expended, number 2 now online, shame I cannot dump number 1 for the 1.3 tons mass loss.... where is my crow bar....

Quite neat you can see of the two heat sinks one is offline

Landed in a plain and set out to the hill on the Horizon [no pun intended]

Scouring the surface for Polonium it seems like a insurmountable task
Like climbing a steep slope on ground that keeps giving out under you
Screenshot_0065.png

But it is just a matter of changing gear and digging in

Screenshot_0066_1.png

WHEEEEHH!

270 Km travelled, a 4 units of Polonium found. Metallic Meterorites yielded 3 in the 9 clusters of three found so bad luck here, 1 in 9 metallic meteorites containing the element needed
Could be a long stay as there is 5 Vandium, 8 Arsenic, 9 Yttrium and 33 Niobium yet to local in system
