Doom - free open beta weekend (15-17 April)

Hope I'm not having search fail but I can't find this being discussed. I really suck at the FPS genre, but this was the first one I seriously played, and I should see what the remake looks like. Took a little digging to get it via Steam (search for Doom open beta not just Doom) and the 10GB download is in progress now.

To be honest, while the screenshots I've looked at so far look great, I'm not convinced it will be able to recreate the feel of the original. Hopefully I'll be able to test that first hand myself shortly.

Lost interest already. Started it to find it is multi-player only in the beta. Well, might give it a go anyway since I downloaded it, but lot less motivated already.

Disappointing. I'll take a look when I get home from work just to see for myself. Multiplayer isnt Doom unless you have to load up an IPX stack and link up with 10B/2 with a dodgy terminator on one t-piece.

The previous Doom game looked good, but the gameplay was terrible and predictable with a virtually non existent AI.
ID is not very good at creating a game with a bit more interesting gameplay.

Hmm... when I talk about old Doom, I mean the 1993 game. Anything else with that name between then and now, I didn't really pay attention to. It was hot for 1993.

I lost hope after looking at some Beta MP footage. Popping dmg numbers over enemies, loadouts and perks aka COD style, two weapon limit, pretty slow overall. This isn't DOOM by any means. If you want proper old-school arena shooter welcome to my thread about UT 2016 that is currently available as Alpha version to everybody for absolutely free. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=241408

P.S. Very subtle plug :D

Ok I tried to clear any expectations I had from the previous games, and gave the beta a fresh try.

Quite simply it's awful. Outclassed in every respect by games from decades ago. It's really disappointing.

Oh - and the 80386 DX and SX chips were not the same. DX was fully 32bit, SX was 16 bit externally. SX were usually treated as "286+ a little more" chips - they were great for DOS but even WFW3.11 was painful on them.

That new Doom game is crap. Plus it's already dead now that they announced that there will be no modding. Doom was always about the modding, it gave these games a very long life. This one is DOA I'm afraid. The campaign could be interesting for a while, but after that, nada.

Really no modding support? Can you link a source? (I would like to show it to some of my over enthusiastic friends...)

Played one match - same old same old. Is there going to be a single player campaign? Only way it will (possibly) be worth buying.

Single player campaigns are so last millenium. ;)

The only thing modern gamers seemingly want is Random Generic Shooter With Famous Name For Prestige.

I'd say it's sad, but it's way beyond sad.

Hahaha yes the good old days! The whole reason I decided networking was more important than software development for my degree :D

My problem is that having played Wolfenstein 3D onwards for FPS games, nearly every online FPS these days pretty much remains a simplistic Quake variant arena shooter for shameless cash...the Arma series is a rare exception with genuinely different gameplay. Arma 2 with added mp modes like Domination and Insurgency is still the pinnacle of multi-team gaming with depth, and Elite should try to borrow / adapt a few ideas if you ask me. Having some objectives for combat rather than a mindless free-for-all blast is a start!

Anyway, as it was free, I tried the new Doom beta for 5 mins. It's Quake 3 Arena, nothing new here yet. And that was made free to play in a web browser, renamed to Quake Live and done by Bethesda. Unfortunately it looks like they have moved it to Steam and started charging for it: https://www.quakelive.com/
