Horizons Before i buy Horizons....SRV query

Today I was up for buying Horizons. Then I read about SRV control frustration so must say I'm having second thoughts. My main concerns are can I use mouse/keyboard to drive around on planets...and will gameplay suffer by doing this? Secondly I take it SRV controls can be mapped and in this case will they mess up bindings with inspace flight controls?

I hope someone can help me with this...as more research I do I get more confused....whether it's a lack of coffee or my age :)

SRVs have a seperate control mapping, independent from flight controls.
No idea about SRV control frustration, using a HOTAS is fine, also drove it with mouse and keyboard, no issues there.
You got drive assist which helps on icy bodies, pretty nice to see the different traction on different bodies / gravitations.

Planetary bases and landing on planets alone has been reason enough for me to buy Horizons.
SRV action is some nice icing on the cake.

For every post about how 'bad' the SRV is there are 10 saying it's fine. There's a clue there. Yes you can (re)assign driving control and they won't affect flight controls.

Hi. M&K player here, no joystick for flying either.... . I find it simple with these controls which can be rebound separately in the setup section, so no need to worry about that. A&S left and right. W&A accelerate decelerate. Most people with issues expect the SRV to handle like it would on earth, but in low gravity too much speed will make it hard to handle. It can sometimes be tricky, and occasionally frustrating, but by in large it's great. Drive assist on/off makes a difference.

As above.

I have an X52 pro hotas.

For flight I use the stick and throttle (with the odd key like SR or landing gear on keyboard).
For driving I use the stick and keyboard.

Tl: Dr yes you can do it the way you want to.

Edit: You will find the same 1-2hr frustration like you did whilst learning to fly. Start on a low gravity non-ice world. Try assistance off. Then once you've got the hang of it move to ice worlds, high G worlds etc. Within 2-3 hours you should be fine to do whatever you want. Careful on landing though, gravity is not kind to ships that make mistakes :p <- Take shields!

I drive it using WSAD on the keyboard with no problems. I do have the throttle set to increments (10% ?) though, as it makes speed control so much easier for me.

Thank you all very much for the advice. The option I'd like to go for as I'm not very dexterous at all is up arrow/down arrow=acceleration and hopefully steerable via the mouse as basic movement just to get me started. If that would work I would be sold? :)

All the issues the SRV still has are Systemic (bugs), hence the Control Input method doesn't affect them AFAIK (unsure about the 50% Throttle bug when used via Keyboard).

I think running the SRV w/ Keyboard & Mouse should be pretty much fine.

Don't do that, it will only lead to frustration. Just use WASD for acceleration and steering. There is a reason why no racing game in the past 30 years supported mouse control for steering. Because it sucks, a mouse is literally the worst device to control wheels. Use it for your turret.

How come I was instantly able to drive with no problems at all?

Maybe you used the (very good) default configuration instead of messing around with your controls?

Actually I set custom controls for my HOTAS. Right tool for the job. Still amazes me that people expect to use rubbish controls and get much enjoyment out of it. The last time I used keyboard for driving was with Revs on the C64 in 1986. And even that game allowed for analogue input, so I hacked an Atari 2600 paddle controller to use as a steering wheel.

And as for mice! I can never understand why trackballs aren't more popular.

I use HOTAS as well but tried keyboard and gamepad because some people said it's impossible to control the SRV. Well it's not.

I loaded the default config and changed some buttons to my liking. The reason why I asked is because we had a few players who decided to use a custom scheme and configured the joystick axis as digital input...

Jesus, why would anyone do that?

I guess I'll just have to try it then...after all Horizons isn't just about SRV's cheers all :)

Do yourself a favour and invest in a decent analogue device, preferably a HOTAS. Would you drive your car with a keyboard?

Revs - excellent - another brilliant game from Geoff Crammond. I played it on the BBC B and Master using the expensive "official" dual analogue hand held joysticks. Just couldn't play it with the keyboard alone. Elite worked very well the hand held joystick as also.

I would highly recommend Horizons. Even just for the amazing planet terrain you'll come over. And why skip out on allot of season content.
Not going to say anything on the SRV handling though

I hated Horizons a few months ago when I couldnt control my buggy at all due to frame rate issues. Now I have a new card its very smooth and great fun and I am back playing it. The next patch looks really interesting but mainly for the changes to outfitting and missions which I presume everyone will get. But I have to say being able to land on planets and drive around does improve the game substantially.

I map the buggy to work on the same controls as the spaceships except pitch is reversed. I also only use forward not reverse on my throttle (I use the keyboard for reverse). I have mapped the turret to my POV on the joystick so I can control the buggy and turret independantly. It works well enough. You would not have issues using a mouse and keyboard though I dont think. If you can fly well then driving the buggy will be very easy.

But definitely a joystick is the way to go with this game, if you can. My joystick is a MS Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 which is a brilliant joystick and pretty cheap nowadays on Ebay. It doesnt have as many buttons as the modern ones but the force feedback is brilliant in other games (not ED - still waiting for them to implement FF!). You dont have to spend much and a good joystick will improve things 100%.
