We have previously believe in an update would improve the missions, never happened.

I hope that the 2.1 does not become the same thing

I believe you're a bit early out with that "statement" mate.

Please point to any space game that do what ED is right now, better?

This thread is an 11 month old necro. I doubt the OP of the quoted comment is going to reply somehow... [uhh]

Name me a game that is, these days.

Well within the last five years (just, official release not Alpha) there was minecraft, not a huge fan myself But I think it could be considered gamebreaking at the time nothing else like it on a similar scale or concept. (Although willing to accept I may be wrong on this)

But apart from that I cant think of anything totally unique. I would think with games being so expensive that to risk making a flop isnt worth the gamble for a major publisher. If anything unique or groundbreaking was to come out I suspect it will be a small indy developer.

What gets me slightly troubled is that many people seem to compare the original game to ED.
This seem quite outrageous as the industry (and its croud) has changed dramatically over the past 30 years, and the average gamer demands a whole lot more than a game from '84.

The thing is: Previous Elite Games were landmarks, hence people remember them and like to see something similar. In the past 10 years, the gaming industry has become pretty much stagnant and the laughing stock of software industry, struggeling with simplified gameplay and ancient technology (single core, 32bit, minimal ram/vram usage).

So yes, the average gamer demands much more than the gaming industry can deliver, and people were confident that Frontier could connect to past success.

So far, they have delivered a mediocre remake of a great game, which arguably is better than almost anything else that the gaming industry has on sale today, but still there could have been so much more and people are disappointed.

On Facebook and on other social networks, I see tons of comments from people claiming refunds because the game simply is too 'simple' in its design.

those are usually a minority that haven't played Elite games before.

NECRO!

Yeah I started it just before 1.3 was released. Looking at how FD hyped 1.3 made me realise how little has changed. 2.1 is hyped just as 1.3 was. Sorry to wake up a dead thread like this. Never thought I was necroing it...
Lock it if you wish pls.

No need to lock it.

Be interesting to see how it stands up when 2.1 enters Beta and we can all see what has changed this time.

I played the original elite on BBC model B and was Elite, after I think about 6000 kills. I still have the 5.25 floppy disk for the BBC master 128 version that I can't bring myself to trash. I kept the original novella but I think that's been lost in historic house moves.

It was one of the first "open" games were you could do whatever you wanted.

I still really like good texture free wire frame graphics even now.

Yes, ED is way more complex with politics, more than 2 station designs, more than 2 planet designs and indeed more than one body per system. Never mind billions more systems to visit.

I miss some of the original ship models missing from ED though.

Hey all!

I've been playing Elite Dangerous since the start of 2015 but became curious about ED at the end of last year as I just wanted a cool space game.
I had no idea there were previous Elite games. Especially not all the way from 1984. I was only three years by that time and the only game I had tried was Super Mario.

What gets me slightly troubled is that many people seem to compare the original game to ED.

Can it be that Elite Dangerous wants to be too much like its predecessor?
Or is this just my misconception of what the franchise is all about?

Have you considered the possibility that ED isn't aimed at the "average gamer" you mention ?

Please don't let the coments you read worry you. If you like the game then play it. If you don't then don't. Frontier will be OK - no need for you to worry.

It is a misconception.

ED does procedural generation of the Galaxy just like it's predecessors, but does it infinitely better in infinite more detail. ED's visuals are stunning.

ED contains spaceships like it's predecessors, but they are infinitely more detailed, will get complete interiors, are completely customisable etc.

ED's flightmodel is much more advanced than that of the previous games.

ED has multiplayer, the prequels did not. This complicates the design of the new game considerably, nevertheless FD is doing it.

Sadly ED lacks offline play, but at this stage of development I can see that this is not feasible. Perhaps in the future when the game is in a more finished state.

ED will get an FPA component. This was unthinkable when the previous games were made. I think this is a total game changer.

Of course ED is in the midst of development. Much more will follow.
But even now we can already see that ED does not want to be too much like it's predecessors at all.

I missed the 84 version, buried in college and full time job to pay for it, chasing women and what not. I now find myself thinking that I should check out the original, just for reference.

I think everyone can get a copy of the original from their Frontier account. Its certainly worth a look at. By todays standards its rather basic but for its time it really was cutting edge and one of the better games at the time. You have to bear in mind as well that personal computers, the spectrums and commodores were basically brand new and the hardware specs are laughable in comparison to todays.. The only thing prior to that were some Atari home entertainment games such as table tennis. Now computers are ubiquitous but back then things were just getting started.

I have fond memories of the early days of home computing. I still miss the Amiga which is probably one of my most favourite computers to use and program. Although, I don't miss loading heaps of 3.5 floppies. :)

Indeed !

My spectrum had 48Kb RAM, an 8 bit Z80 CPU running at a 3.5Mhz and a tape cassette that took 5 minutes to load Elite !!!

Do people of today even know what a cassette is ?! :D
