Can it be that Elite Dangerous wants to be too much like its predecessor?
Or is this just my misconception of what the franchise is all about?
It is a misconception.
ED does procedural generation of the Galaxy just like it's predecessors, but does it infinitely better in infinite more detail. ED's visuals are stunning.
ED contains spaceships like it's predecessors, but they are infinitely more detailed, will get complete interiors, are completely customisable etc.
ED's flightmodel is much more advanced than that of the previous games.
ED has multiplayer, the prequels did not. This complicates the design of the new game considerably, nevertheless FD is doing it.
Sadly ED lacks offline play, but at this stage of development I can see that this is not feasible. Perhaps in the future when the game is in a more finished state.
ED will get an FPA component. This was unthinkable when the previous games were made. I think this is a total game changer.
Of course ED is in the midst of development. Much more will follow.
But even now we can already see that ED does not want to be too much like it's predecessors at all.
