Help With Unknown Object

Hi everyone, yesterday I observed a strange object when I arrived at Charlois Dock in the Lampade System. It wasn't listed in "Navigation" tab of the "Target Panel" nor could I target it with my scanner.

See attached pdf.

Does anyone know what it is?

I think it is called a planet. you have to scan the system with a discovery scanner, then it will show up in your targets.

Big round black thing with a white outline usually signifies a planet with it's sun directly behind it relative to your position. What you've seen there is what we call an eclipse :) I'll echo the others and say, no reason whatsoever to go with pdf's, game screenshots come in .bmp format which you can easily convert to .jpg using a bunch of free tools available, and upload to an image hosting service such as imgur or photobucket.

You can just throw the .bmp at imgur and they'll turn it into a .png for you (admittedly that is a bigger upload so if you're speed or bandwidth constrained on that local conversion may be better)

Guys just as an FYI forum currently does not allow uploading of any images due to some issues.

Imgur etc are the current recommended way.

At OP - Yes it's probably a planet or moon etc that you haven't discovery scanned yet, fly towards it in supercruise (slowly) and it should auto-detect at very close range. Or use the scanner to ping it.

Yeah FD stopped hosting images directly so get an Imgur account, email verify it, upload to Imgur and when you do you'll a load of links. Select the BBCode link, copy it and past in your post and it'll show up.

But that's a planet eclipse as others have said.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't post a jpg etc as this forum doesn't allow it, but it would let me upload a pdf.

I had used my advanced discovery scanner on the system which came back with nothing new. Which is why I was curious about this object. Usually whenever I point my ship at an identified body it's name appears on the HUD in orange. As this wasn't happening it had me confused.

Anyway, I've just traveled back to Lampade to double check and it was still there near the station. So following the advice given here I aimed my Asp at it and jumped back to supercruise at which point it was identified on my HUD and it was indeed a planet.

So I guess this means that not all celestial bodies will appear as identified in the HUD when looking at them when outside of supercruise. There is so much to see and learn in this game and I haven't even ventured outside the bubble yet.

I just downloaded the .pdf and then spat my coffee over the keyboard! haha

I guess we were all here once?

Anyway, it's a planet with light shining through the atmosphere :)

Oh those yellow bright things...<snip> :D

Reset your filters (on the left panel). This will bring this planet up as unknown, if you have scanned it with a advanced discovery scanner. you can then tell what type of object it is.
