The Formidine Rift - Part 2

Until we know exactly who edited it out and why they did it I think it should definitely remain "apocryphal" and certainly not be considered as canon.

If we consider the books apocryphal then the Formidine Rift does not exist since it is not mentioned outside of the books.

That isn't what I'm saying at all. I'm saying the books, as they appear in print, ARE canonical. The issue is whether or not something that does not actually appear in the book itself should be considered canon simply because it was the author's intention but somehow got edited out. There was an arrangement made between the authors and Frontier Developments that required the authors to work closely with Michael Brooks to make sure that what they wrote didn't contradict anything in the game. Therefore before something that didn't appear in the final, printed, versions of the text would have to be confirmed by Michael Brooks, as well as the authors, before being considered canon.

Not trying to get into an argument. I am nobody when it comes to saying what is or what isn't canon. But neither are Drew Wagar or John Harper. If it isn't actually in print then, regardless of the intention, it needs to come straight from Michael Brooks as to whether or not it can be considered canon. The authors were required to work with Mr. Brooks closely to make sure that their books fit into the Elite: Dangerous lore. You are welcome to pretend that the text says what the authors say the original intention was. That is fine. I'm not arguing that you shouldn't. For me though it is quite simple: If it isn't in the text and it doesn't come directly from Michael Brooks then, while I find it interesting, I can't consider it to be canonical.

I don't care what you do or do not think. I'm just passing along the information. I likely won't bother next time. Thanks.

The flaw in this theory is the edit had nothing to do with Brooks, who presumably had approved the first version. My understanding it was a continuity edit by a third party contracted by the publisher that got a bit over-zealous and turned into a content edit. And presumably maybe the authors and/or publisher would have checked with Brooks before they said it was canon in response to my query? What would you like as evidence, a personal handwritten letter?

Don't be like that. I appreciate your passing along the information. Seriously though ... when you said that it didn't appear in either the "paperback or ebook" version I was ready to put down cash on a copy of the hardback if I could find it. :)

My understanding of canon is simple: if it gets left out of the final version then its not canon. Deleted scenes and alternate endings are fun to watch but if it got cut, for whatever reason, then it isn't canon.

I understand that Drew and John both say that it was supposed to be in the text. That itself makes it a great find. Hopefully if they do a new edition of the text it will be restored.

At the risk of being run out of this thread on a rail I am going to bring this up once more... but before I start know I have good reason.

"Section PR5 row 2, seats 5&6 - Dead center ice perfect viewing height"

Has anybody tried going to:

COL 285 SECTOR PR-S B5-2

It's near the core systems. No idea what planets are there, if any. Sounds like maybe something on an ice world, maybe planet 5 or 6? Or something that's visible from that location?

I must warn you your tinfoil hats might have been poisoned with testosterone.
At first it seemed like an interesting quarrel on what should be taken Canon, but it seems to turn into being something deeply personal...

I for one am fully willing to wash the excess testosterone from my tinfoil top hat.

Seriously clavain ... I didn't mean to start a fight and apologize for the way I apparently came across.

One of the reasons I don't consider anything that actually doesn't make it into a final to be canon is because, if I did, then this guy (who's scene in the original Star Wars was cut for time) would have to have somehow mutated into the slug-villain Jabba the Hutt by "Return of the Jedi":

Frontier don't go for reediting history as much as Lucas, you're safe here. It was an accidental edit, it's meant to be canon. Move on....

Following both threads and the various speculations the only rational thing is to number each system from 1 to N and then visit them in turn since essentially every portion of the galaxy fits at some level :).

I want all 9 (yes! NINE) galaxies back then!

They did so a significant amount of changes between Elite and Elite 2. Its hard to even put "The Dark Wheel" and "Imprint" into the same universe as the later games.

Still... I just can't consider something as "Canon" if it never appeared in the actual published text. The only thing I have to go on is a conversation between the author and a third party.

As much as I respect both Drew Wagar and John Harper and have enjoyed their books ... they aren't the final arbiters of what is or isn't canon. That role falls on Michael Brooks.

You are welcome to accept this as canon all you like. Me? Until I hear it first hand from Michael Brooks I just can't. The text in my ebook copy as it was published stands as canon. If what is currently in print is wrong then changing the ebook copy is rather trivial. I own several books on Kindle that have been updated after my initial purchase.

A simple edit to the text or official word from Michael Brooks would be enough to end any controversy.

There is no controversy. You are the only one who seems to think there is. And the only one making unreasonable demands and mountains out of molehills.

On a completely different topic anyone else than me remembers Drew stating we didn't identify all the characters involved in this plot? I'm digging through all the galnet articles so far for anyone interesting and also the forums for the aforementioned statement of Drew. A simple yes or no is sufficient I don't ask anyone to look up and link anything

No insight there but it's always bothered me that
the cannibalistic luddites in the book appear to be completely out of the discussion. I've never come up with a good angle on them but why put them in the book at all if they don't play some role. Not quite up to reading Ted Kacynzki's manifesto for clues but if I find another roll of tin foil I might, better yet I'll just re-read Edward Abbey's "The Monkey Wrench Gang".

What demands are unreasonable?

I'm making no demands on anybody but myself. I'm simply stating what MY criteria are for accepting something as canon. Why is that such a big deal? Why can't people decide these things for themselves? I simply stated my opinion that if it ain't in print, in the game or directly from the desk of Michael Brooks then it ain't Canon. That remains my opinion. You are welcome to yours.
