Odds are whoever gets to make first contact will be in an explorer ship, so option 1 won't really apply.

Depends. Will the interaction possibilities be as multifaceted as they are with the barnacles?
I'd watch them from a distance. It's an alien race and we humans have fantasised about meeting an alien race for thousands of years. Would be foolish to destroy them.But if they attack? Boy, I'd lure them down and do a canyon run and outmaneuver them.
You can't outmaneuver them because aliens always have superior technology but if your ship has a chute on the back you could maybe deploy and release it while it is trailing behind you in attempt to cover its ship rendering its sight useless.
I'd observe from a distance... why? Because the odds are that they would be considerably more advanced than we are. I would also try to take a screenshot. My follow up reactions would depend on theirs.
Going in shooting, especially if they are mob-handed, as they are quite likely to be, is likely to be suicidal.
However, if they do start shooting, I'd try to assess how good they are before breaking and running.

Yeah I was thinking in that direction as well. And maybe, afterwards I'd say "That's what I call close encounter" after I punched it in the face.

If we are talking first encounter with thargoids, I would not engage in combat, because I know they are extradimensional visitors. Who knows how much time may have passed in their own dimension and how much more advanced their technology might be now.
Odds are I'd be pulverized in mere seconds. I would mash the living hell out of my screenshot button though... and be ready to log out via menu so I don't get destroyed.
