Well, I gave it a good go...Honest!

It's anything but dull to me, with the right setup it is incredibly immersive, beautiful scenery and some challenging approaches to ports like Shriver in the Ovid system, money is just a bonus.

I guess given your day job I can see the attraction there.

I've said to a mate a few times when he's been off pew pewing in a haz res and I've been sneaking around Robi smuggling, or he's been off exploring and hasn't seen another ship for a week whilst I'm slaughtering fools in a combat zone for a CG; best thing about the game is that we're in the mood for doing totally different things that provide a completely different game experience, yet we're both playing the same game.

I get bored doing A > B trading after about 15 minutes but doing it the way you're doing it can be good fun. When I'm in the mood for playing some missons I will often accept one at wherever I am and take off with a rule that I have to accept a mission at the drop off point, then I just carry on doing that for a couple of hours and find that I'm 250 LY away from where I started and have gone from delivering emergency medical aid to smuggling landmines. Then I sit quietly for a minute and examine my conscience :D

I'm on my way back from Beagle Point.
The outward journey was (for me) rushed - honk/scoop/jump, honk/scoop/jump, honk/scoop/jump ... just trying to keep up with the rest of the DW expedition.
On my return trip, I'm planning on visiting some points of personal interest. My first planned destination is a Neutron field. I don't really need the credits: I'm certain that if I sold my data right now, I'd get Elite in exploration, but I want to do it.
Later, I'll head east for a roundabout counter-clockwise return, visiting nebulae, clusters and constellations I haven't been to yet.
I used to feel just like the OP about mining. How could anything be more boring than shooting rocks? But I tried it and enjoyed it.
Give exploration a chance. It's not a goal or a destination - it's a journey.

I traveld 30000ly to sag a and beyond.scand near 6000 systems from which 3000 were neutrons, black holls, unexplored, found near 100 elw,ww.my trip was 1m 20days,and never, repeat never got bored.conclusion is that ed has tons of things to ofer, and exploring is 1 that is not for you.

What's your jump range with the Cobra?

Sorry for the delay in replying. It's currently around 18LY due to me being loaded out for bounty hunting with weapons and armour. I know if I strip it I can go further but when Eco jumping it's fine. Longest jump I had to do on the trip was only 11.5LY, most were in the 5-6 range and one was only 1.15LY... I felt like just SC'ing that one!

-1 virtual rep for talking trash about an aspect of the game you don't enjoy. If you don't have anything nice to say, why bother saying anything at all?

Unless you have legitimate criticism. But "DULL, DULL, DULL" doesn't qualify.

Because my opinion of it is just as valid as yours.....OK?

@OP,

didn't you make a similar thread a couple of weeks ago? realising exploring isn't your thing?

I'd be careful with those rusty pins, I see a trend developing :)

Your opinion can be summarized in one sentence: I don't like the exploration part of this game. Hardly worth a post though... So why essentially say the same thing in dozens of more unnecessary words?

i dread to think how long it will take you doing it that way! i just bit the bullet and a couple of massive trips, with lots of neutron farming along the way!

I want to fill the rank of exploration but I am in no rush to it as it grants me nothing. I am already elite in combat so it´s fine. But even if it takes me a huge amount of time I would never feel like pulling my hair out or anxious because I want to do something else. Sadly, exploration requires an state of mind I cant attain, so got to do it as I can. Right?

Indeed, you are correct. But with everyone telling me how much "fun" I was missing I thought I would put aside my view and have another more concerted effort.
But I think my initial feeling for it was correct. It just isn't for me.

I made Ranger the other day after a short trip and like many others I don't go farther than about 2k out.
Exploring really needs more to do as in it's current form it is so tedious!

Aw man, you're missing all the fun :D

But well done on giving it another go against your own judgement. At least you removed all doubt this time.

Wow, that went south all of a sudden. After I repped the author for using an unusually subjective qualifier in his opening posting...

Each to their own, exploring just makes me so, so depressed. It clearly is not for me at all.

...and for not following up with the more traditional ad hominem against those who do like it, he gets a couple of ad hominems right back at him. :(

I usually have BBC Radio 4 on while out in the deep black. I find it hard to concentrate to radio speech on its own, but Elite seems to occupy the part of my mind radio leaves alone. Together they make a decent combination. Works for me, though your mileage may vary.

Cheers, Phos.

Your tolerance for A-B trading amazes me, I can't do more than a few runs before getting distracted, because even if I'm nowhere near home base I can still buy a ship & do some pew pew.

When you're out exploring there are no distractions, you have to commit to your target and grind through it when you're bored.

On my final run up to explorer elite I covered 10kLys in one session because I was focussed on my target. I broke it down into manageable chunks & just hit my hourly & daily targets one by one until it was done.

You can do this Dan :D

Beware of space dementia.

Makes you do funny things.

I just tested a theory that I don't need thrusters for pire supercruising...

You do.

I also went canyon racing with my shields offline. Luckily I noticed and didn't crash!

However, I've covered 20,300ly so far, and passed though, and around some amazing nebulae, and an insanely dense starfield, and neutron starfield(not that you can really see neutron stars). And I also covered 7500ly in a few hours. Exhausting! Only a few 1000ly to go until I reach The Great Annihilator, then a few 1000 more to Sag A.
All in my slow Python. If I'd taken my asp or Anaconda, I would imagine I'd have been to Sag A on be well on my way back by now.
But my Python never gets used, so I decided it's coming on the longest trip it will ever take. But hopefully not it's last!
I'm hoping I make it back to the bubble before 2.1 drops.

Fly safe o7

The thing I find interesting is that this seems to boil down to 2 mentalities.

1. "Trading is dull, so I stopped and did something else"

2. "Trading is dull, but I persevere for the satisfaction/moments of great numbers of credits."

No one I've seen claims that it isn't dull however! Just some people think it's worth it.

Did you mean exploration? I guess the same can be said about trading. The issue (if it is an issue) may be that ED is making this into a simulation, so we are not jumping for golden bananas or getting combo points for mining along a half-pipe while triggering the X-triangle-lotus combo on our game pads. We are doing what exploration really is: A long dreary slog towards a distant goal. We also gather data, like real exploration does, but we don't get to really analyse it (just like the astronauts weren't really able to do much processing of moon-rocks). We do get our names on things at times, however. And we get to see them first.

I enjoy exploration for the simulation aspects. It seems like if I wanted a game-version of it, No Mans Sky will be coming to my PC soonish. But it will not be able to replace ED for the simulation aspects.
