Appeal to Frontier: Please do justice to "The Missing"

For those unfamiliar with the "The Missing": They're groups of humans who have set out into space many generations ago in "generation ships" and have been, well, missing. Stranded, crashed into suns etc.. They were hinted at around the time Horizons launched and were again name-dropped in yesterday's livestream. It sounds like a story arc Frontier wants to tell during the Horizons season (and maybe beyond?).

Here's my (exaggerated) concern, based on - possibly wrong - intuition and the current state of Elite as well as the way past story developments were handled:

Once the things have been patched into the game, someone at Frontier drops a short hint that something about "The Missing" might be discovered in space region XY with a Galnet post to go along. Everyone and their dog travels there and has to scan every USS possible until finally someone finds some generic unrecognizable debris and a scan shows that it's some part of an old ship of "The Missing". This scavenger hunt continues - a community goal to scan as much generic debris as possible seems like the weapon of choice, until somewhere out in space a wholly generic space station or surface settlement like any other is found, labeled as belonging to "The Missing". A Galnet note is issued, saying how The Missing have finally been discovered at system(s) XY and how it's bla bla... Story arc complete. Much discovery, many excitement!

Here's how I imagine "The Missing" playing out in a more involved and fulfilling manner, seeing as they sound like a bag of treats for the neglected explorers out there if handled right:

  • Hints by Frontier and Galnet posts, even better: hints by NPCs/engineers for explorers starting the scavenger hunt
  • Specific non-generic debris, giving further hints, e.g. finding readable/narrated flight log entries or other hints when scanned about ther whereabouts or travel route of "The Missing"
  • Actual generation ships or their remains at the end of such scavenger hunts. I'm talking about unique assets here! This is such a promising concept that I feel the reuse of the generic debris we already know to be an insult to the concept. Think about the world of Trigun, where a generation ship hovers in the orbit of the planet and its people have lived on it for generations. Where the ground population scavenges the relics from the downed generation ships for technology. Think about the generation ships of Xenoblade Chronicles X or any other tale with such ships. The possibilities for unique assets are great.
    • Derelict generation ship hovering in space without any human life left on it, but "Event Horizon" like log book entries upon scan => How about a Space Zombie infested enterable structure for whenever the "space legs" expansion drops? Or Space Hulk-like infestations for the 40k fans out there?
    • Derelict generation ship in space with a live population on it, which has persevered over generations, scavenging the ships parts to turn it into a station, where "The Missing" NPCs can give missions, just like NPCs in other stations. Potentially unique missions, leading to unique "ingredients" for exploration related engineer upgrades!
    • Downed generation ships on planet surfaces, essentially in the two variants above.
    • "The Missing"-specific engineers, providing rare and powerful exploration related upgrades once explorers have gained their trust.
    • The obligatory community goals to provide "The Missing" - once found that is - with protection/resources/exploration data to help them develop their settlements. E.g. adding shipyards to their stations/settlements. It would be even more impactful, if they actually sold unique ships/SRVs/moduls, which couldn't be gotten anywhere else once their settlements have developed further through such means.

This is an appeal to Frontier: Please treat "The Missing" a bit more like the latter scenario and much less like the former. Especially where the assets are concerned. ;)

I recall hearing that the story for this year would focus on these generation ships and the quest to find them...

Still waiting for something to happen 4 months into the season...

Thousands of years of a society cooped up inside a ship, adrift from the rest of humanity, with a small breeding population and nowhere to run? If the first we hear of them isn't some horrific tale of an outpost devoured by cannibals wanting revenge on a species that left them to go Space Crazy I'm going to be vaguely disappointed.

Morse code...credible generation ship range from Sol...barnacles and UAs will turn out to be biotech devised by the missing, you'll see :D

The missing merged with thargoid technology to survive the long voyage, and that merging resulted in the unknown artefacts. They then created a secret society and kidnapped the prez, killed the emp, and tortured Palin. The barnacles are UA that have been planted and reached a symbiotic relationship with the planet. Soontill Relics are just more evidence of the missing having landed on other planets.

The missing are taking over their old human home world. All current plot lines involve the missing... dun dun dun... careful whatcha wish for.

I'm a real scientist. I have a degree printed on high quality tinfoil, written in genuine crayon.

Same here...
...thb I hope to see one since it was mentioned in the original Elite manual...
...and the Asteroid Stations...
...both are not forgotten!

I share your concerns. Id rather they remain a mystery until fdev can do them justice. At the very least some unique debris, crashed generation ships. Not just the standard generic stuff.

OMG yes whatever happened to the HERMITS ?? The space farers that ended up living in hollowed out asteroids with warning buoys to ward off any asteroid belters.

The Missing stories start right at the very beginning of Galnet. They've told us there's things to find that no one's seen yet and the Generation Ships are part of Elite lore from long ago, they are in there somewhere already I'm sure.

I'm not sure how this log book stuff is meant to work though. I think encounters with derelicts/wrecks or an inhabited planet with an orbiting Generation ship and sub-light vehicles so they can talk to you in space would do me nicely

It has been my hope that some outposts/remains are already out there waiting to be found, either handcrafted or procedurally generated. The information we were given in the Galnet post suggests that not all survived, perhaps most did not, but I had been hoping so see some sign of something at the DWE waypoints.
.
A barrier to finding them on a planet surface, that will be removed for 2.1, has been the ubiquity of procedural POIs with remains of SRVs, skimmers and ships with cargo canisters such as tea, coffee and Bertrandite. During Distant Worlds I recovered some Occupied Escape Pods from places as far away as the borders of the Bleia Permit Zone, which I subsequently turned in to the Imperial authorities upon my return. I don't expect that activity to have any consequences, much like turning in the vouchers from scanned data points in the same locations, although it would be great if it did.
.
Love the Space Hulk reference! Just because an outpost was built by humans, doesn't mean it is inhabited by them!
.
I do have some ideas of where to look for the Missing closer to the bubble now I'm back but I've largely forgotten how to fly and dock my ship properly and whether I could find anything before 2.1 arrives is highly unlikely - but you never know! If this storyline is to move on and be the centrepiece of the season, like the change of leadership in both the Empire and the Federation last season, then some hints are going to get dropped eventually. They will find us if we don't find them first!

I agree that the "generation ships" are cool and this could be a very fun story line to engage in. But personally, I'm not keen on lots of artist effort going into stuff that will probably only be seen at one or two places in the galaxy. Any future players joining next season are unlikely to ever encounter these ships.

If it were a question of priority, I'd much rather have more hangar variation, or the suggested asteroid stations. Brookes' own book, the "official" elite novel, is even set on one, so it really seems odd that they're not higher priority.

I think the 2.1 delay may have something to do with that.

They made a movie of that with Dennis Quaid and Antja Trau (AKA Faora from Man of Steel).

I would like long lost colonies to be found on distant worlds much like the Freelancer brigade where they made huge colonies after several years.

If they'd end up being just static assets without any meaningful interaction, yes, hardly anyone would bother except for sightseeing after a while. Barnacles anyone? That's why it would be ultimately important to embed them in some form of progression path. As I said, "The Missing" specific engineers, modules, missions, even ships or SRVs etc., ideally mostly exploration related and potentially "unlock-able" by community goals would go a long way.
