Turn off VR mode

I went to play Elite for the first time since the Rift and Vine launched, which I don't have nor care to have probably for another decade, and it refuses to launch, nor revert to anything but side-by-side VR mode. Great job you guys, make the game worthless except to less than 1/10 of 1% of your users for a gimmick.

Sounds like your client is misconfigured. I'm playing fine without any VR hardware and haven't had any issues. You'll want to post this to the support section of the forum where you'll get some help.

Good luck and don't let it get you down. Elite works just fine without Vine or Rift.

Client hasn't changed since VR launched a few weeks ago. Just verified file and they're OK. Tried deleting graphics options, no change. it's just plain broken.

Under Graphics, what's set under the 3D section? Make sure it's set to off.

BTW: While in beta, 10% of the user base had Oculus Rift DK2.

If it was truly broken for every non VR player, don't you think there would be a few more mentions of this rather than just your own?

Staying away from VR for another 10yrs? You really don't understand what you're missing.

I remember being really hyped about VR back in the mid 1990s when the first head-mounted displays started coming out. Most of these didn't even have a bicameral display, just a single tiny low resolution LCD packed into a very heavy helmet. Didn't matter though ... I wanted it! Alas they were all out of my price range ... thank God. They were horrible and would have been a waste of money.

This new generation of VR headsets seem to have finally got the technology right. Personally I plan to wait a few years though. Competition in the market place will drive the price down while the quality goes up. 10 years though? No. Maybe two.

You don't give exact symptoms of the problem but have you had a look for your issue here?: https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/

Have you tried a complete uninstall and reinstall of the game (launcher + game files)? (backup your bindings file first)

Seeing as this is not a VR-specific issue it might be worth asking a moderator to move your thread to the support section here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=50 and a member of support might see the thread and chip in.

Failing that suggest you raise a ticket on the support site.

Presumably that's a 'gimmick' that you can't afford to purchase?

It's not a gimmick, although it's certainly flawed at present, and having used a VIVE all week I'd comfortably claim that it is the future: step one. I feel like I'm in possession of an early cellphone and expecting to hold a smartphone in 10 years time. Avoid making bold claims that only serve to reveal ignorance please.

Also, I've seen no evidence that VR mode is active by default

The game works fine with and without, you can plugin and change, or unplug and it will change back, it is entirely possible it is something else that causes your issue.

I love the way these people throw around the word 'gimmick'. I'm guessing the OP used to have a Spectrum. ;)

No problems with my client either.

Sounds like one of the settings got mucked up... you just have to set it back. Even in stereo mode you should be able to find the setting.

Sorry I can't look up the exact setting, at work atm.

sounds like you have sîde by side 3d enabled.

that has absolutly nothing to do with vr as vr dosent even show side by side, vr shows a normal window on yur monitor, sounds lie you should do your homework first before making a fool of yourself.

I'm having a very similar issue with Elite on Steam loading in VR mode, even though I have never changed any settings, nor do I have VR equipment. What is even stranger is that when I load Elite it gives me a popup window with two choices, VR or not and even though I always select no VR, Elite still loads in VR. I tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling Elite and it does the same thing.

Try launching from the Frontier launcher.

"gimmick" ? Only someone who hasn't tried ED in VR could possible say that!

One of the options is a dropdown that you have set to either "HMD (Headphones)" or "HMD (Speakers)". You need to set it to "Off".

Where is this dropdown menu? I didn't see it under Audio options in game, nor in the Steam properties. I actually am playing with headphones would that make Elite automatically load in VR mode even when I don't select it? If so, that should be fixed, just having headphones should not force the game to load in VR mode.
