where is the main ED music theme ?

Hi every body !

While the FX and sound design is one of the greatest we have ever heard in a space simulator, to me there is a *huge* lack of a great ED Music Theme, like we had in the previous opus in the introduction animation (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hR5_qMs-_Y ) . This music was a huge add to the identity of the game.

All we currently have is some kind of orchestra fight/space/<replacebycontext> ambiance kind of music. Not wanting to be too harsh but hey I'm pretty sure your musician/sound designer team can do better.
I'm pretty sure even the community can do better at composing so this is a open question to the ED artist team : why would music not be a priority ?

You also have the option to introduce reinterpretations of some greats and well chose classic themes, why not !

Can't agree with you here - the music & SFX for this game are perhaps the best features of it.

ED Main opening title has a score sheet - sure, it's not the 8bit plink-plink many are used to but it still counts. SFX are top notch.

Music, for myself, is far less important than the ambience of the game itself. (Most games I turn the music off)

And, perhaps causing an outrage here - the classics ? Blue Danube has been done to death .. drop it like a toilet seat.

Is this what you are looking for?

As for the music in general...it is meant to be in the background and also dynamic based on what's happening. It's subtle but works pretty well IMO due to the darker tone of ED compared to previous versions of the game. The Frontier theme for example doesn't really fit into the tone of the current game.

Wow amongst all the things about Elite people can complain about, I thought at least music was safe. :D
It's awesome, imho, can be really epic in fights and poetic on planets. It fits perfectly, making a nice background that doesn't interfere with your perception.

Anyhow, you can always turn it off and play Two steps from hell from Youtube :p

Always thought that the soundtrack in ED by Erasmus Talbot was close to perfect, least to my personal preferences. I don't regret having bought the soundtrack either, even though it was in Spotify a few weeks later.

Were there many new tracks introduced in Horizons?

I did too, lending support to the idea "you can't please everyone" :)

I guess for music and auditory taste doubly so...

Several. Some light piano and strings for setting to mood on the surface.
I always hear it when looking at screenshots which is quite awesome and proof of subtle greatness.

Although it's not about the Opening Credits Theme I love the music in this, because during the game I don't notice it. Playing on mute and the game is empty and soulless.

That, for me, is perfection.

(and the rest of the sound isn't bad either)

Well, you wont make me say something I haven't said : I'm not saying the music ambiance is bad , I'm saying there is no real ED music THEME. In short there is no opening theme that keeps staying in mind. Such theme could be declined in various interpretations to fit each section of the game.

I'm pretty sure all of you would remind the main Frontier theme, while you won't remember ED's one that's for sure.

That only how I feel, as a music geek.

The good thing about the music in ED is its not in your face, it has subtlety, so if I wish I can have some brain killing metal going on. I appreciated the music when I was in the abyss.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I just wish there was more, actually. The music that's there is great, but I'd like an even wider range.

The ability to remember a piece of music is not a good measurement for quality though. Just think of all those commercial jingles that get stuck in your head! :D

There are indeed recurring themes in EDs music. They are subtle, but they are there.

That's only how I feel as someone who studied and teaches musical composition though. ;)

The music that is at 35 minutes in to the video Tinman linked is what I think of as the opening theme that you desire and it does indeed stay in my mind.

My favourite piece of music, which also repeatedly comes to mind even when I'm not playing is the piano part that plays in Supercruise that is just the 3 notes, 3 notes, 4 notes, 3, 3, 5. I'm at work and can't find a link to it, I'm sure someone else can oblige though.

It's fantastic!

Ok so I couldn't let it lie :D

I do really love First Movement - Andromeda too

They should make a modern version of the original Elite theme for ED.

I made a post about ED's OST. Some soundtracks are great, but a lot are too short! Not a fan of the combat music.

We need more songs for supercruise and such.

Elite Dangerous Music, Don't Cut the Soundtracks Short to 1:30 Minutes!

As a big fan of video game music, I listened to the official Elite Dangerous OST. The ambient music is great of Disc 1 - Exploration. However, I truly hate that the composer cut most soundtracks short to a measly 1:30 minutes or less!

The music builds up and then it ends abruptly. So it feels like its compressed and parts are flat-out missing. That makes it significantly less enjoyable. A proper soundtrack should be at least 3:00 minutes imo. Ambient soundtracks especially are normally longer than usual.

I think it's better to combine soundtracks or increase the length to 3+ minutes and reduce the total number of songs on the OST.

Disc 2 - Frameshift & Starports is phenomenal and has longer soundtracks though.

I hope the composer reads my feedback. Thanks.

There's only 3 soundtracks during supercruise. This gets very repetitive. Most Elite soundtracks aren't memorable. It needs stronger melodies and variety such as the music of Eve Online by Jon Hallur:

Yes but... it wants to sound orchestral but that doesn't make it in the end, it lacks some identity to me.

They should make a modern version of the original Elite theme for ED.
To me not necessarily a remake of the old theme, but at least a new *solid* theme. Something's missing in the current one, very subjective to my pov btw.

I agree.

It so subjective. I can't ear no more this piece of music.
There could be songs instead, even community driven songs, why not.

I'm not used to ear 'ambiant' like music in Elite, as an old fart. We had music, not ambiant. Repetititive music, but real songs :)

In all seriousness, David Lowe's new full orchestral recording of Frontier Elite 2 at Abbey Road should be with us soon and there's a little bit in this KS video!

Yes, yeeeeeees. That's it. I wasn't aware of that. It sounds so good :)

And why not some rock tunes. We had that in First Encounter, it was fitting well, to me !

I want this:

Thank god for the power of YouTube! lol

Yeah, the original theme was great! So was the set of classical music that was included in Frontier.

With Elite:Dangerous, there is no more exciting soundtrack. I have turned off the music rather quick after purchase and now I'm listening to Laibach or BSG Soundtrack for ambience, otherwise I just watch videos while flying.
