45fps with 980Ti and i7-3770K (not oc'd) on 1.5 super sampling - SMAA and VR High - is this normal?

Hi all

I tried to put all the details in the title. Basically I'm running the HTC Vive with a i7-3770K chip and a GTX980Ti with 16Gb RAM.

I'm getting 45 fps with SMAA / VR High and 1.5 Super Sampling.

I would have expected more fps than that?

I just wondered if this what was comparable to other users with similar rigs and/or settings?

Also, has anyone found optimal settings for the Vive?

I've heard that Frontier are doing graphical optimisations? Does anyone know if these are just general ones (making asteroid fields better etc) or are they specifcally targetting the Vive to improve the experience?

Thanks for any help you can give me

:)

What is your Steam VR test results? Might be a good place to start.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/323910/

The graphics enhancements were for the non-VR portion of the game, but there may (should I say hope) that Vive will benefit too.

From another thread (sorry can't remember who it was or I'd give credit.)

VR Low
Supersampling 2x
MLXAA 2x or 4x

or

VR High
Supersampling 1.5x
MLXAA 2x or 4x

Try turning something down a tad. You maybe hitting high 80s and sync kicking in
. I also thought 1.5 ss was just a gpu sink at the moment.

Thanks for the info. My steamvr settings are all high so shouldn't be a problem. I'll try those settings that you posted shadragon. If that doesn't work I'll turn something down a bit as Adam says. Thanks again for all your help :)

*edit* should sync be turned off then?

Well, like others have suggested, benchmark your system to make sure you are within specs.

There is something else to consider, though. As you probably know, the Vive renders on two screens at 1200x1080 each. Since it's two screens, your video card is effectively rendering a resolution of 2400x2160

Supersampling at 1.5 pushes these numbers to 3600x3240.

Let's consider the fact that Supersampling in this game isn't exactly well optimized. Supersampling costs more performance-wise than the benefit you get from it (true, things look great but at what expense?)

Lastly, VR is still in its infancy. Performance issues are you be expected.

My suggestion? Turn off Supersampling.

I use AMD, and I use Virtual Super Resolution. I am sure Nvidia has an equivalent feature. Basically, I render Elite at 4K resolution but in a smaller screen. Works almost as good as Supersampling, but without the ridiculous performance hit. :D

Have you tried the geforce experience profile for vr? People I know are reporting rock solid results with that.

Some great suggestions there. I've not tried the GeForce experience VR setting. I didn't even know it had one but I'll look it up. Will post back with results. :)

*Edit* I've had a look and can't see where to set the geforce experience profile for VR ?

Also, in my settings I've only got vsync on or off ?

And I've set Frame Rate Limit to Off.

Sorry was on my phone before. I believe it doesn't matter is V-sync is on or off the VR drivers automatically enable it to stop sick making experiences.

when I saw Super sampling I started laughing. 4k resolution and stereoscopic view and you wonder why everything is so low FPS?? HAHAHAHA

4K resolution? Do you mean it works out as 4K with 1.5 SS?

I've found with SS on 1.0 my fps goes up from 45 to 89.9fps. So will leave SS off for now.

I think you've got your numbers off a little there Aelemar :D

Each screen in the Vive is 1080x1200 as you said. And there are TWO of them as you said. Which makes an effective resolution of 2160x1200, not 2160x2400. That would be 4 screens :p

It's still a high resolution to be pumping 90fps, but not quite as bad as your calculations might suggest :D

Can somone please point me to some example settings high & low on Vive VR.
As I am confused as what settings I should be using or trying.

Given that ED does not show 1200x1080 setting once 3D turned on.

Intel QuadCore Haswell i7
Geforce 980ti GTX 6Gb
16Gb Memory

I'll be sure to check that out. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for all the great advice in this thread. I'll play around with the settings this week/weekend and see if I can get the best out of it :)

If you find a combo of settings that works well, please post them here. We need to get a sense of what works until the devs publish a "how-to set up the Vive for Elite" doc.

so TLDR, use DSR or AMD equiv instead of the ingame SS.

remember the dk2 setup, ingame SS was far superior to the nvidia or amd dynamic SS. (if your rig could handle it...)

cant wait to dive in tonight.

anyone experiment with full OC'd 980ti and whats possible?
