VR High Vs. VR Low?

Hey All,

I just completed an upgrade of my PC, I'm currently running an i7 6700k, an MSi GTX 980 (4GB VRAM) and 16 GB of RAM. This appears to meet the minimum VR spec requirements, but I'm curious as to what that really means. I took a break from Elite after Horizons hit because my old card/processor had a rough time running the game, but I can now run it like a dream. I've also got a Vive on order, and am expecting to receive it in June. With a rig like mine can I expect to run it well with the VR low preset? Or will I be looking at running it in VR high? Just trying to understand so I can temper expectations!

Thanks!

I would certainly expect smooth performance in the game for Vive owners in June.

Can't wait to see what 2.1 brings ....I assume that is why you mention June.

All being well I will be back IN my ship then too... As for the 980 in the vive I am sure that will be great but steamvr does need to get its asynchronous time warp sorted as right now according to the flyinside fsx guy it is a little behind oculus at the moment.

My Vive should arrive early June, so lm very interested in the settings people are using, to get the best results with ED.
Also, I'm aware FD are looking into Vive display issues at the moment, really hoping they get it nailed asap.

You will be looking at VR high. By the way, if you just click the preset and look at the settings, vr high is not all that high. It's somewhere close to medium on average. Partly this is because of the resolution - you won't be seeing single pixel detail at long distance and so the settings are optimized around that. I ticked off blur in addition. Source: I have a vive and can run vr high in space and in stations with a slightly lower spec pc than you.

Well i would hope so.

As it is right now. i get a headache from the blurry edges + trying to read the menu´s

The scale is awesome but not worth the lag of comfort.

I tested the vive in some demo´s and i get a much better image there.

When E: D supports SteamVR and the HTC Vive then I'm sure your rig will be able to run it in Low VR, however Frontier have yet to comment, to my knowledge, on when they will add support despite a press release stating it would be added in 'Holiday 2015'. Hopefully the Vive will see some love in 2.1, but Frontier have said very little to date, so I'm not holding my breath. It's a huge let down as I pre-ordered the Vive in large part because of Frontier's press release, so I'm left more than a little disappointed with the lack of support.

to be fair, Frontier keep their cards close to their chests on this stuff. i fully expect it to come in. Their lack of comms on the issue does not mean it is not a priority internally.

It was not long ago i was hovering over cancelling the rift due to no official support for CV1, and then they (to use a horrible americanism) knocked it out of the park as it were.

fingers crossed 2.1 has great support for both, tho i think ATW support is something needed on steamVRs end. Frontier could program it themselves like the flyinside fsx guy did for the vive, but, ideally you want it natively supported on the vive run time.

This. VR is an investment. It's going to get better with time and issues will be ironed out. Steam VR just updated their software and the oompa loompa FDevs are hard at it. I suspect in time the VR in Elite will rival the quality of sound and music we have currently. And that will be a good day to see,
