What Should I Do Now?

Hey All,

Kind of a weird situation here, and I'm looking for advice.

I've kind of hit a Grinding wall, and not sure what I should do. Everything is getting kind of boring for the level of farmage I need.

Here's what I have:
-Fully decked out Asp Explorer near Robigo
-Fully decked out Vulture for HazRES Bounty Hunting
-Fully decked out T7 Transport for A-B runs.

Here's my problem - I'm a very casual gamer. We're talking 1 hour every 2-3 days. Robigo, while awesome income on good runs, is like 2-3 hours MINIMUM, which is longer than my play session (because those blasted timers keep ticking when you're offline, what B.S.!)

PowerPlay would help boost my Bounty Hunting, but the *maintenance* for the ranks is more time than I can dedicate. Right now I only make about 1.2 Mil an hour in HazRES, Low Sec.

My T7 Transport doing A-B runs makes about 2.5 Mil an hour (significantly better, and great because a run only takes 15 minutes, and I can really log off anywhere, so I can squeeze them in whenever I have a moment).

Even still, we're talking like 44 hours of grinding for a fully decked out Fed. Assault Ship (my next goal). The commitment for reward, especially when so boring now, just doesn't seem worth it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to either increase my income or change up my playstyle? (keep in mind limited play windows).

Thanks!

For limited playtime a best result (in terms of credits) would be in my opinion:
boost your BH income with ALD or ZH rank 2 bonus.
Rank 2 is really no time to achieve (100 merits = 4 kills undermining)
And the boost is really noticeable.

Sounds like you need either a new goal or no goals at all :)

You could try a bit of exploration, perhaps staying within a few thousand light years of the bubble in case it's not for you. Or you could maybe start collecting some of the smaller ships, which are great fun to fly (and which you could always sell for an FAS or whatever later on).

Another suggestion: play in open and send lots of friend requests. That way, whenever you're on it's likely you'll see several other CMDRs on too, so you may be able to wing up with them if they're not too far away.

I can thoroughly recommend giving a Buckyball race a try. The next one is scheduled to commence on 30th April and will run for two weeks (click banner for details).

If you like, think of it as your commander taking a break (even in real life we have our jobs but then we also have our hobbies). So currently in game I'm doing ground base assaults in a Gunship to earn Empire rep. But as soon as this race starts it'll be "sorry your highness but I need two weeks holiday to take the old Cobra out of storage and compete in the Kessel Run".

I've learned more about piloting my ship (and occasionally my SRV) from Buckyball racing than I ever did from the daily grind.

In a similar vein, you could join the Fuel Rats. For this you'll need to dip into their IRC channel (http://www.fuelrats.com/i-need-fuel/) and say you'd like to help. They'll show you the ropes and have you qualified to rescue stranded pilots in no time at all. You can also say hi over on the forum thread here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=150703

Have fun and remember - the only grind is the grind you make for yourself (there are a lot of other ways to play this game).

I would suggest going exploring would allow you the benefit of "log off when I need to"... obviously the further out you get, the more the space madness kicks in... You could offset that by playing a bit of CQC, if you could get a fast game when you log in?

I'd flip the question around: ask yourself not what next grind-step you can take, but what it is you want to do. Pretty big chance you wont need to do anything in order to enable yourself to reach your goal.

I got to that point.
I chose to commit to one grind, and I'm glad I did, because the cash is liberating once you get over 100mil.

I worked out how many neutron stars I'd have to scan, in order to reach elite explorer, and created a spreadsheet to track my progress. (Crucial, in order to maintain focus, and commitment)
Then I bought an asp explorer, and headed out to the Neutron Star fields.
I made a big mistake, which was scanning along the way. This takes a lot of time, and the returns are pitiful compared to what you make in credits, and progress towards elite rank in the star fields themselves.

I played for one or two hours each day, for 6 weeks. (It could have been less, but I took a couple of detours to do SAG-A and the Great Attractor)

Came back Elite with some to spare, because of my cautious assumptions, and over 120 million in exploration finders fees.

Then I wanted an Imperial Cutter, so I needed to grind for Imperial Rank.
4 weeks (of one hour = 1 mission run per day) at Cubeo got me the rank I needed, and a further 50 million credits.

Thus enabled me to get my Cutter, and outfit it for 720 tons cargo.
Found a lucrative "involuntary worker unit" run, and grind that at leisure now, making 10-12 million an hour when I need it.

Having committed to two long term grinds, I now have enough cash to pretty much buy what I want, where I want it, to do what I want.

That of course, is the next question. What do you want to do, if you didn't need the money, or rank you are grinding for?
If you answer that, you may find you don't *have* to grind at all!

Join a player group that breaks down long campaigns into small mission sized operations.

You get to be part of big projects, but your game time is manageable.

AEDC - hardcore gaming for smart casuals.

(Alliance but you'll be a better person for it)

I'm also fairly casual these days. About 3 dedicated nights a week at 3 hours per, and then I might squeeze in a couple more hours here and there. I find I can stay PP Rank 4 (5 million a week CRs) with dedicating just one night to it. Remember some merits carry over each week. Once you hit 1500 to get rank 4 you only need about 750 a week to maintain it. That leaves me time for Winging Up with my crew to do what ever:BB Missions, Pirating, Planetside Canyon Runs, Photo Op Runs, HazRes BH, Distress Signals, Rare Runs, Sidewinder Demolition Derbies whatever we feel like.

You may try Community Goals. These are really fun (and they are probably the only place where you can meet not just occasional CMDR, but a whole lot of them!), and they offer nice rewards for participation (not always, of course... but sometimes, they do!)

Dark Souls 3 is a good choice while you wait for patch 2.1

[offtopic]Why everyone seems to like that hardcore "paradise" is mystery to me. Never liked this game series, and never will.[/offtopic]

Hardly everyone, and is nowhere near as hardcore as most people say.

As to why... it is a work of art.

I found mining a bit of a break, relaxing and makes a few credits as well. Then try some short exploring trips, you may like it. You can always pop back for some combat/trading when you feel like it. And, 2.1 should give us a better mission package.

- Wait for 2.1 and then go find yourself some engineers without falling back on community knowledge/ the web (that's what i'm looking forward to)
- Check the threadnaught https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=227901 hunt/find some barnacles, solve the morse riddle (if there is one.. - which is part of the riddle, i guess), shed some light on unknown ships etc. (maybe wait until 2.1 for this too)
- join up with the lovely nutters looking for the rift/Raxxla https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=239212&highlight=formidine+rift or go solo about finding ..anything.. about it

It's possible to do this without much playtime - if it's possible for you to keep up with events on the forum you should be able to keep yourself entertained even while not playing

If your goal is to make a lot of money in your limited game time - I'd suggest looking at the community goals. Spend the odd hour trading/fighting in these and you can get a big payout when they finish.

Even if you only get into the top 90% it can be quite nice.

*edit* As Biohazard suggested :)
