The Vive discussion Thread

I have even uninstalled the Oculus-software, what fixed other games (Time Machine VR)... but E : D still doesn't work. Have tried various combinations of USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, too, in order to have separate USB-hubs in action...

Good luck building in the stock phrases for 400,000,000,000 system names...
For me I would be happy, if you had an option to limit the search to my bookmarked systems. I tend to frequent the same systems regularly, and limiting the matching options could help with Speech to Text. (Although I could do that in Voice attack anyway I guess).

So apparently Frontier just released a patch for Elite Dangerous and they even address a VR-related issue but this doesn’t seem to be related to the HTC Vive graphics quality. [mad]

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=244673

Can anybody confirm that the issue is still there?

It isn't related to VR graphics, but to starting the game in VR mode when launched by a VR launcher.

Nobody is playing the patch yet so I can't confirm anything, but I wouldn't expect a stealth fix that is unmentioned in the patch notes.

Well, the latest patch has fixed my with HTC Vive crash while loading the game. Now as I see it... like the difference to the DK2. Thing look bigger so that my body and the cockpit of my ASP have a more natural size. It's also a great feeling to stand up and look around. Only negative aspect are the reflections in the fresnel lenses, but I'll fly some time to check if that really bothers me.

Regards and thanks to FD,
Rhombus

The last patch made the visuals much better but i can not find something in the patch logs. Strange? o.o *confused* Can someone confirm or unconfirm?

I am afraid the last patch did not seem to make a difference with the Vive, Still running 2XSS on a 980Ti, Still aliasing issues :(

Would be nice to know if it is something that can be fixed, I really want to cancel my pre-ordered Rift.

ED in vive is a no go for me.

It hurts my eye´s trying to read anything from the menu´s, its a let down.

I guess Track IR has spoiled me.

The game still crashes for me when trying to launch it through SteamVR and it still looks bad. I am resigned to wait and do something else at this point but I certainly hope Frontier doesn’t consider the problem solved.

My mate with the vive says the panels are more readable now, he does not need to lean in to read them
I am still waiting for my Vive so cant comment

It is slightly better i guess.

I cant compare it to the rift as i do not have one.

I still have to learn forward to read the texts, eyes still hurt.

If you reset your seated position from the HTC Vive settings / General menu, you can tweak your distance slightly which can help with readability. I lean back ever so slightly when resetting my seated position, then in the game I'm slightly closer and text is much more legible.

Massive Vive comfort and FOV increase!

I'm a bit sceptical but guess might be worth a try?

I completely forgot about the other face padding, guess I was too eager to just get right into it - I'll give that a shot too, thanks Xaisis!

My Vive is being delivered tomorrow! So excited. I guess Saturday morning will be spent moving a little furniture round and mounting the light-houses on the walls.
If it all goes well, I'll have my DK2 on Ebay on Sunday evening. :)

So my Vive arrived today. Initial impressions on E : D usage coming up...

I am seeing a strange light streaking effect that looks to me like lens reflection, but is most likely a rendering issue. I haven't proven this yet, but I've also not seen the issue in any other games or demos.

Curiously, I'm not getting the text issues that others are seeing (it's much better for me than on the DK2), I can read everything the game throws at me. I am using a blue colour scheme, however (I do even when playing Elite on my monitor).

Framerate, surprisingly, has not dropped at all as far as I could tell, which it did occasionally (sometimes brutally) on the DK2 - it's been fine in all situations so far (including rings, gas giants, SC, normal space, etc.) but I've not gone down to planets yet so I may update this post when I do that. (FYI this is on a 980 Ti, using VR High settings).

Overall, light streaking thing notwithstanding, Elite looks fantastic on the Vive.

Also, just being able to turn fully around, and see the entire ship without the DK2's camera giving up on me is wonderful :D (I'd like to be able to turn the wall grid off when you get out the chair though, since it shows all the time once you do that, not just when you approach the walls).

So, initial impressions are very positive indeed. Probably some tweaks to be done by Frontier, but looking good!

---

UPDATE EDIT: Okay, so after some more game sessions, I have to amend this somewhat.

The streaky light effect gets more irritating as play goes on, especially in really dark spots where the UI streaks all across the screen.

I have now seen SC stuttering (and a bit at stations), just like I sometimes did on the DK2 :( This doesn't always happen and seems to vary between launches of the game in the same locations.

I've also noticed a bit of difficulty reading text at the fringes, though it still doesn't seem as severe as others have said (and I got this a bit on the DK2 too, so it might be my eyesight ;))

Still, further play has diminished my initial positive reception somewhat. Hope these are issues Frontier knows about, and are working on, because otherwise the game does look truly fantastic on this headset!

UPDATE EDIT 2:

This article seems to imply that the light streaks are actually an artifact of the lenses. In which case... this issue is unlikely to be solved for Elite, without HTC producing lenses similar to the custom ones Oculus designed.

Can anyone who knows more about optics confirm / deny this?

Is there any form of real and official communication on what the status is on the Frontier side? I've only seen a "We're aware of it" post on Reddit which was pretty vague and was almost blaming Vive for the issues, but no other real confirmation or progression update whatsoever. It would be great if we could get some insight in what the actual status is and whether or not people should be waiting for an update or start looking for other solutions (going as radical as changing HMD's). People paid big bucks for their VR experience and this game and if Frontier is going to slam that "Made for VR" and "World's leading triple-A VR game" on their website homepage it would be nice to communicate on the matter a bit more.
