Why Stop at 10 Years?

Hey Cmd KEBO here!

If Frontier has a ten year plan, what's the plan after that?
Why not just continue adding/upgrading features?

I would gladly continue paying yearly and keep the good times rolling.

If the plan is restart new with new technology,
I fear that the graphics will be nicer and the AI might be better,
but then we'll have to go through another ten year to reintroduce the features we already had.

I used to play sports games and I found with each new generation of consoles,
that's what would happen.
Madden Football and NHL Hockey don't offer much more immersion now than they did ten years ago.

Just my two cents...

LOVE THE GAME!!!

Having a definitive (or somewhat definitive) plan for 10 years does not eliminate the possibility of extending that plan/adding scope/continuing support later, 8 years before we get to that point though...a bit premature.

^^ This ^^

I don't even buy green bananas.

HAHAHAHAAHAHA! Oh, this was funny!

Pretty sure it's a 10 year plan, to be reviewed every year and either curtailed or extended as they see fit. It's quite standard to have a future framework in place, but it doesn't mean after 10 years they just pull the plug. But to plan further (or even that far) is kind of pointless. Imaging how the hardware will change in 10 years, considering the last 10.......and it all depends on revenue of course!

I'm having exact same thoughts Commander KEBO!!

In oposite to those childish responses above I can tell you, I'm still playing some of the games that were crafted in 2004-2009 (e.g. Knights of the Old Republic, Witcher I etc.), as it tears my heart apart sayng goodbye to a title that was with me everytime I was sick, down, girlfriend dumped me or other nasty moments of my life, when they were cheering me up. Always when needing it. Its just some games are like a really good friends of mine and the immersion out of them is sometimes so unique, Im only able to find a similar one years, years after, in some other title.

When it comes to Elite Dangerous, it launched such an emotions of mine more than a year ago, I'm being scared that there might be no more of it at some distant future. Just an empty hole in the heart of explorer of the void that probably wont be filled by anything that is even close alike. I feel so one with David Braben's vision I just dont want him to leave my home... Never!

...but I have an impression we will be exploring our most favorite realm long after 10 years from now one way or another. This project is just so unique, there is just nothing like this...

LOVE THE GAME!!!!!! :D

Rep for being a soulmate Commander!!! :D

Im not bagging on FD here, but if it lasts 10 years it would be an amazing achievement and they should probably all retire happy :p

I never did see an official direct quote on ten years,
just allot of references to it in other threads.

The game might not last ten years but I just see games repeating cycles.
It be nice to see a game (like this one) buck the trend...

My manager has been telling me to work on my 5 year plan... I hadn't realized the sinister connotations until reading this thread.

When the devs have mentioned a "10 year plan" it has always been in the context of: "We have very long term plans for this project going forward and have laid out plans for many years ahead."

Never understood why some have decided to take this as some sort of "deadline". I've even seen people talking about that there are X amount of years left due to them counting down based on the start of development.

It's very simple really. If the game continues to bring in money they will continue to develop it. If the financials eventually dries up they won't. Anything else would be madness.

So far so good though! :)

I figured it was not actually a fixed 10 years but the game can stop before the ten years just the same as continuing past.

When it does end (which I hope it does not, I know naive),
I see where someone will pick up the pieces and start the cycle all over again.

The seasons concept I like and hope the spirit of it encourage a longer life than expected.
(like the Simpsons?)

That way Tinman, when they introduce fixed POIs on planets,
you won't have to wait for that feature in the next game!

I fully expect Commander Braben to continue to milk the Elite franchise to death in some manner as he has done for the past 32 years except for the years when he was only thinking about it.

Frontier has spent the last 25 years being most famous for the game they hadn't even got around to making. While they were waiting to make Elite they made a game about a dog and Wallace and Grommet go to Disneyland*. They'll get a few years out of their flagship title I'm sure.

* This might not be true

It's taken them 2 years just to add player defined markers to the galactic map, so dragging out developement for another 8 years should be no problem for FDev.

mmm I couldn't help but notice that wasn't the only thing they added in the last 2 years. If your interested 2 years ago we were playing an Alpha with just the one station at Zelada and there wasn't even trading in the game.
